Some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the world. Less than a 2 minute walk from the house. Bald Eagles fish there too, along with otters, kingfishers...ect.... somewhere down the line I try to get in.

I seem to remember John making a similar statement when you landed in China the first time.

He is still under the impression that the Japanese Army can take on an Allied one and come out and top....he fails to comprehend that your airpower will cripple him & your late war troops will finish him off.

That looks like a deer scrape - where deer clear the velvet from their horns by rubbing against tree trunks.

Canoerebel -> RE: The Good The Bad & The Indifferent (11/12/2017 4:33:59 PM)

Sometimes I err on the side of assuming that John can see things clearly, forgetting just how hard it is to assemble a puzzle from so many parts having so much (and sometimes contradictory) information.

Here's his email message this a.m.: "Oh…no…the Fleet is here.  Been engaged in some subterfuge.  Several of them appear this turn.  More on the way…

"Speaking as a player, I really like your move here.  Might have waited another 10-14 days so you could be engaged or threatening to engage my line up in Eastern China/Western Manchuria.  If that had happened I would not have a wealth of reinforcements to send south to the knew threat.  Reality is that you have 3,000 modern AV landed and will be on the move with a strong chance of crushing anything in its path but at least I do have the option of making it a fight.  As said, nice move."

He (understandably) perceives this as a major land campaign for Korea rather than as a limited operation intended to seize advance airfields. The invasion is configured for strong defense and base building. It does not have the supply to rampage.

I think the true dividends will be two-fold: (1) Gunzan as an airfield; and (2) I think this has finally worked John into a feverish state of mind in which he's going to commit ships, men and aircraft. It's in this environment that he might lose a substantial number of points...if I play this right. If I follow Longstreet's doctrine, seize the high ground, and await the enemy's attack.

2/3/45

Korean Invasion: At Gunzan, the day opens with transports unloading supply and a few late-arriving units, including one tank regiment.

The a USN TF bombards.

2/3/45

Invasion of Patani, Malaya: APDs land part of a Chindit brigade at Patani, which recon says is undefended. If this invasion is successful, John will have an army behind his MLR. But there's a lot left to be done before this ripens into a major threat to his position.

That's odd - the CR says CB Ikoma is present but it does not appear in the animation. FOW?

Japanese Bombardment at Gunzan: As this takes place, I'm thinking of John's words yesterday: "Are you seriously looking at making another Amphib Landing in China/Manchuria/Korea?  Wow.  Roll the dice Sir.  I’ve got anywhere from 600—3,100 AV at the coast ports.  This could be interesting to watch."

OK, maybe he had ~600 AV at Gunzan when he made that statement. First, "Attacking force" only shows the troop count for units participating in the attack (while "Defending force" shows all defenders). Second, naval bombardments and air strikes, perhaps aided by the landing actions might have knocked that back substantially.

And of course there is trash-talk bluster.

I think John had 300 AV here - 40th brigade and a tank unit. The Allied bombings, naval bombardments, and amphibious assault barrages, lowered that considerably. But, yes, there was some bluster too. As I said yesterday, I thought I detected a "worried John" in his comments.

2/3/45

Battle of Gunzan: Mixed shock attack and deliberate attack by Allied army is immediately decisive.

Canoerebel -> RE: The Good The Bad & The Indifferent (11/12/2017 6:51:02 PM)

2/3/45

Battle of Hong Kong: 3:1 attack drops forts to 2 with heavier damage to the Japanese. Perhaps most significant, Chinese losses were light. HK will fall next time or the time after, I think.

Paratroop Assault Patani: Allies land behind Japanese MLR but the lodgment is vulnerable...but John wish to fight here? Probably.

Good thing the hunter is now becoming the hunted. Even if he hasn't quite realized it.

Don't know why I gave up fishing. Have not been out in a decade. Smallmouth are the best in my opinion. Probably because you can fish for them in streams that don't require a boat. Funny, I spent ten years on merchant ships and I hate being in boats. I like walking and wading around in water. Largemouth are just to easy.

With so much going on this was a fun turn to watch and then handle for tomorrow.

Funnel Cakes: More troops (strat mode) and supply are ready to unload, but I'm pulling most ships back to Death Star, waiting to see if John strikes. The engineers are ashore to build the airfield (currently level 1). While that's going on, the priority is to handle enemy attacks by air and sea.

Fancy Pants: Hong Kong will fall very soon. Suchow should fall tomorrow. Several hundred points scored for enemy units destroyed here and at Gunzan.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: The Good The Bad & The Indifferent (11/13/2017 5:15:41 AM)

Congratulations on the successful Korean lodgement. In the Small World Department, I was in "Taiden" (nowadays "Daejeon"--or "Big Field" in English, a city about as exciting as its name) on the weekend (November 11 and 12) to visit a brewery operated by a French pal. Some of the customers at the brewery were USAF guys from "Gunzan" (AKA Gunsan).

You might have a decent shot at Russian activation if you can round up all those troops on the south coast of Korea. Worst case it would force him to depopulate China to make up for losses.

Cheers,
CC
