At least some things are starting to go my way! Good news above the skies in OZ.

------------------------

These are just a fraction of all the attacks in China right now. Its just painful to watch. Supply at all Japanese bases including Chungking is now 0. (Actually 20 in Chunking).

Some better news here as I manage to ambush Tom with a big CAP over Sydney. Manage to outsmart him for once. I moved the fighters in to LRCAP Newcastle which had been visited the previous day. This failed as Tom shifted target. But I knew Tom wouldnīt miss the fighters so I took a chance and stood them down. This worked well as 150 Zeroes strato swept the following day. I then put the CAP back up and sure enough the bombers came in the following day. [:)]

G3M2 Nell: 1 destroyed by flak

Allied aircraft losses

P-39D Airacobra: 1 destroyed on ground

In the replay two more strikes came in getting chewed up. Sadly this was just sync bug...still 22 Nells and 15 Zeroes for 7 own losses.

Two days later Tom was back at Newcastle. Unfortunately for Tom I had just snuck in some US Heavy AA into OZ... [:'(]

33 Nells are shot down. Nice. [:)]

Tom has now lost about 300 Nells/Betties over OZ. Sadly this is dwarfed by the 5000 Strat points he has taken.

------------------------
KB
------------------------

Once I got NavS up over Noumea again Tom started plastering everything in sight while scurrying out with the KB. Got conformation that they are returning via SIGINT this turn. Very rare! [:)]

Some very interesting SIGINT this turn...

Donīt think I need to post anything. You know how it looks. [;)]

------------------------
SIGINT

So Tom is after all playing a bit of the PSYOPS game...[:'(] (If you remember he made a comment in an email where he was pretty nonchalant about Pago Pago.)

quote:

14th Army is planning for an attack on Pago Pago.

Not sure this will ever materialize but if it does Iīm as ready as I can be.

------------------------
Something Something
------------------------

Looks like I did achieve surprise after all. [:)]

Paras drop as planned. I even think Tom missed the Armor last turn. B17s hit the SNLF causing about 150 casualties.

Tom complained it was bad timing for him as he ran out of Zeroes...Iīll take that with a grain of salt! [:)]

Toowoomba! That's just fun to say! Nice little Op. Is re-taking Brisbane the immediate goal or just a harassing move for now?

Haha, indeed! [:D]

I hope for a swift capture of Brisbane. Not sure I will be able though but Iīm going to try. At the very least it will force Tom to start reacting to me rather then the other way around. [:)]

Units with 0 supply doesnīt build forts? [:(] Can anyone confirm this? If so its "another blow to your morale"...

------------------------
CENTPAC

A mighty fleet is assembling at a secret location. I think Iīve made up my mind on where to send them. It will not be an offensive action in the purest sense but it will add pressure on Toms already exposed flank.

Toowoomba is secured! Great news. [:)]

Japanese adjusted defense: 58

Allied assault odds: 5 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Toowoomba !!!

Combat modifiers

Units retreated 1

Allied ground losses:
4 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

During the day we also managed to hit the LRCAP over Toowoomba shooting down 14 Zeroes for 7 own losses. The A6M3 makes its combat debut by getting all 7 planes shot down.

I now have Brisbane in a pincer. Recon shows 32500 troops, 230 Guns and 51 AFVs there. I know Tom had a full ID at Townsville just a couple of days ago. Will he rail them back and try to defend Brisbane? Or will he consider the affair a done deal with over 5000 VP points bagged and simply pull out? There are more VPs to be had but the big concentrations left are in Sydney and Melbourne. Harder to get to...

witpqs -> RE: Japanese land in OZ!! (8/17/2014 6:09:25 AM)

That's am awesomely low casualty total for the attacker in a shock attack. You had them disrupted and divined their lack of AT weapons! [:D] Good job!

OZ
______________________________________________________________________________

Forgot to attach the screen. Known Japanese major combat formations are the 21st and 38th ID. The 21st havnīt been seen since February though. Tom might have shipped them out. I also know the 33rd ID (or at least 1/3rd of it) is at Noumea. Iīm also missing 2-3 IDs that was freed up on Java (2 went to Burma) and 1 from Manila. So worst case scenario I could be facing 6 IDs. While that would be enough to prevent me from liberating Brisbane its nowhere enough to threaten Sydney/Melbourne. Nor is it enough to try and take offensive action against 5 full allied IDs that is properly supported. So it would be a stalemate.

And if Tom put all his eggs in the OZ basket it will open up opportunities elsewhere. Very soon I will have twice the number of Japanese IDs in the area. I would say that for now Iīm cautiously optimistic. [:)]

I have a reserve force in place but that would put Sydney and Melbourne under 500 AV each. Iīm reluctant to strip them too much although forts are nearing 6 now.

The P40 continues to be a disappointment in the air while the P39 is doing way better then expected. Not sure why as the stats are very similar. Could be just a coincidence. Or Iīm colored by my loathing for the P40 in this game! [:D]

Lokasenna -> RE: Japanese land in OZ!! (8/17/2014 7:37:18 AM)

I love the humble P-39. I've even beaten Zero stratosweeps with it. It probably does better because it has a cannon, while the P-40s just have machine guns [;)]. Cannons = good.

Just beware that you're not moving prematurely here. It could hurt to lose a bunch of Australian devices from your LCUs.

Cannons do help! [:D]

Yeah, that would suck badly and I am worried about moving too soon. Normally I would perhaps wait for 2 more US IDs but I need to stop the VP bleed and start working on my own VP count.

I hope I caught him off guard with too few forces in the area. The 6th and 7th are very powerful units but the 1st...not so much. I hope I can use the 25th and Americal primarily if there are heavy fighting. I reckon Tom canīt have that much available in OZ right now.

This is what I believe Japan has available (JFBs please let me know if Iīm missing something)
-Imperial Guards at Temuloh (late FEB)
-2nd ID (last seen on Java about 1 months ago
-4th ID (last seen on Java about 1 months ago)
-18th ID (Confirmed in Burma recently)
-21st ID. (Last seen at Brisbane 2 months ago)
-33rd ID (parts of it last seen at Noumea recently)
-38th ID (Last seen at Townsville 2 weeks ago)
-48th ID (Last seen at Manila. Prepping for the Samoas)
-56th (Last seen on Java)
Iīm guessing the Imperial Guards and 18th are in Burma. That leaves "only" 6 IDs available and I very much doubt the 48th have had time to move to SOPAC yet. So at an absolute maximum this would mean 5 IDs and I would be very surprised if he put them all in OZ.

EDIT: Updated with missing IDs

Very quiet besides the usual pounding in China.

------------------------
Something Something

Everything still on schedule. The Toowoomba troops will arrive tomorrow. Tom did not attack the troops coming out of strat mode at the coast as expected.

My fighters are planning another ambush.

SIGINT

Iīm getting spoiled with useful SIGINT lately! [X(]

quote:

4/21st Ind.Mixed Brigade is loaded on xAK Meiu Maru moving to Noumea.
10/48th Division is loaded on a Japanese xAK moving to Rabaul.

So the 48th is already on the move. This could mean Tom will make a serious effort towards the Samoans. But with Something Something active in OZ I would estimate Tom could at best use the 2nd, 4th and 48th in the OP. Not enough by far. That unless he evacuated the 21st and 38th from OZ .

How much lift to the Japanese posses at this stage? Could he lift 5 IDs simultaneously? Not without using a lot of Merchants surely?

ny59giants -> RE: Japanese land in OZ!! (8/17/2014 11:41:21 AM)

Free Japanese Divisions:

4th Ind Mixed Bde
21 Ind Mixed Bde
65 Bde
Gds Mixed Bde

Imp Gds ID
2 ID
4 ID
5 ID
16 ID
18 ID
21 ID
33 ID
38 ID
48 ID
55 ID
56 ID

20 ID - Components start in Korea, but I include it as it has good experience and I prep it for Luzon

ny59giants -> RE: Japanese land in OZ!! (8/17/2014 11:45:56 AM)

Using the new DBB air stats, I think the P-39s do best in 10 to 15k band while the P-40s do best in the 16k to 20k band. The P-39s have gotten a poor rep, but they are not as bad as some players thing. The cannon helps them destroy lots of Japanese bombers.

JocMeister -> RE: Japanese land in OZ!! (8/17/2014 12:32:04 PM)

Ouch, thanks Micheal. Looks like I missed a couple of IDs. That changes things...[X(]

EDIT: Canīt find the 5th, 16th or 55th in our SCEN?

EDIT: Canīt find the 5th, 16th or 55th in our SCEN?

5th ID - lands in Malaya along with 18th ID

16th ID - loaded on transports at Amami Oshima and usually lands in southern Luzon

55th ID - most of it starts SE of Bangkok with the 144th Rgt going to Guam and/or Rabaul. It takes a while to get the components back together and usually ends up in Burma.

EDIT - all start broken down into components and need to be rebuilt. Maybe Mr Kane hasn't do so with these divisions yet.

I agree, they do pretty well when used correctly. The cannon being centerline is a real key

Some of the wayward divisions have regiments that are not in the same HQ as the rest of the units. Not only do they have to reunite to recompose, but those regiments need ~509 pp at full strength to change HQ first. For me, that is the real problem; trying to find 500 pp to buy out a perfectly good regiment in an already non-restricted HQ. Personally, I think it is good to wait to recombine those divisions until pp are bountiful later in the war. In the meantime there are plenty of whole division he can buy out and of course use to buy armor, which he has done, and perhaps arty as well.

Hmm, lots of shipping arrived at Brisbane. Is he pulling out or reinforcing? I ordered two of the six invaluable F4s to recon tomorrow. At this stage I would rather have him around in OZ TBH.

I also got some more precious SIGINT. This is more solid proof of a move into the Samoans.

....is Brisbane actually empty of IJA LCUs?

Also, even though they don't start free, the 20th ID is very high XP as nygiants has said and starts in Korea. Also consider that the 53rd and 54th IDs (or maybe it's 52nd and 54th?) start in Japan, and though restricted he could have bought both by now.

Not at all! 12 LCUs on last recon. Now showing 14 but it could be just sketchy recon. Ordered another flight today to see if it clears the picture.

Iīve run a search on 53rd and 54th ID. Nothing showed up. So either they dodged the SIGINT or he hasnīt bought them out. Iīm thinking it might have cost him a lot of VPs to buy out every arty and tank unit from Manchuria?

And the biggest one, to boot.

In my experience, these mine hits cause middling damage to IJN capital ships. Maybe around 15 float or so...obviously still enough to make him seek out a shipyard. Manila is probably the closest, but he could also sail for Singapore or maybe even just back to Japan. At this point in the game, the time to sail back plus repair time will put her into the yards until her July upgrade, which puts her in for 21 days as well.

A bit of a setback in OZ. But it was bound to happen.

China

Uuuurgh. [sm=Crazy-1271.gif]

------------------------
OZ/SOPAC
------------------------

I set my B17s to go after the tank RGT on my flank. I also moved in 3 Tank units on my own. I had a hunch Tom would put a LRCAP up. So I set some sweeps to hit him. Everything worked perfectly...but for the fact that it didnīt. Opened up the turnfile only to find I had done a lot worse then I thought...Sync bug. [:(] Sweeps never flew at all.

Luckily B17Es are good against Zeroes. But Hudsons and B17Ds arnīt...

quote:

Morning Air attack on 8th Tank Regiment, at 94,158 , near Toowoomba

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid spotted at 13 NM, estimated altitude 7,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 86 [X(]

Allied aircraft
Hudson I x 12
B-17D Fortress x 5
B-17E Fortress x 17

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Hudson I: 8 destroyed
B-17D Fortress: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged
B-17E Fortress: 2 destroyed, 15 damaged

This is followed by the usual gazillion fragments. Each taking down 1-2 Zeroes while suffering some damaged planes. When the dust settles the Japanese come out slightly ahead. But counting VPs its an allied "win".

Both me and Tom use the bombers to strike at each others armor. We both do some damage but at least allied units suffer mostly disabled motorized support. DIS has risen dangerously on one unit though.

I have a small surprise planned for tomorrow. Would be nice if it worked...
