The Allies got another shot, this time hitting with a torpedo on a xak....

"Hit, but no explosion."

Surely, Jocke is crying in his beer. However, I am enthused that he saw the LSD...this is near Alliford Bay. I am working hard to deceptively sell something while doing many other things.

Did that make sense?

My experience playing Jocke with SL in China was the road to Kunming was the hardest. The low stacking limits here really favour the Chinese. As the Japanese, you are limited to one, maybe two divisions at best and all the armour and artillery you can provide. The 20-25k SL hexes in 3x defensive terrain with forts are the tough nuts to crack. At least in my experience.

I just pondered the SL and you are correct. Kunming is a must take for the industry.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/6/2016 7:16:11 PM)

Jocke is off for the weekend, so I hope to have plenty of time to really focus in on the important tasks at hand.

In about 10 days I want to launch the West Coast invasion.

You've converted me to OneNote. I checked it out for non-WITP purposes a while back based on your recommendation. I'm starting a new Japan game and I've decided that I need to use it to keep all of my plans straight, since everything is so scattered at game's start.

What are your transport aircraft doing? Got any around China? You can use that to help keep your guys in the woods in supply for attacks maybe a day earlier than you would otherwise be able to do so...

Who are you playing?

Man, I love onenote. It would be far more tedious to keep notes some other way, and it is so easy to add pictures and annotate. The tab system to create folders is very handy.

Every one of my transports is flying. Troops back from the Ledo area; in China they fly aviation support and engineers forward. All patrols are resting and repairing for the upcoming West Coast op.

I'll be playing ArtoK again, this time with me as Japan and him as the Allies.

About OneNote... do you know of a way to do the following? I'll probably google when I get home and explore some things, but as I'm organizing forces I'm wondering if I could create some tables on the page for things like air units or land units for each target/theater/whatever, fill in the info (AV, support, or number of planes, etc.) and then be able to drag/drop lines from one table to another to help balance out my marching orders for each vector. Does that make sense? I was thinking it might be possible, you can actually almost do it in Word (so long as the tables have the same basic setup in terms of columns/formatting).

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/6/2016 10:57:50 PM)

I am pretty sure you can as you can chose what kind of information you are cutting and pasting.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/7/2016 5:51:01 PM)

A few notes on Army bombers:

I have 22 squadrons allocated to bombing Chungking. Sounds like a lot, but fifty percent are Sonia/Ann squadrons. 11 squadrons are Helens or Sallies (mostly Sallies). That is 22 squadrons bombing 43 units. Should be pretty darn powerful. I am thinking it will take 8 weeks of attacks on Chungking for the city to fall.

Currently, most are resting with the exception of the Sonias. They will start the bombing campaign after a few days R&R.

I have allocated 8 Army squadrons to ASW training work. Primary goal will be the China route. These pilots are all experience land bombing pilots so they can pull double duty in a pinch. For example, I have three Sally/Helen squadrons that are in Alaska and can bomb Portland and also do ASW.

I have allocated 3 Sonia's to Naval Search in choke point areas.

I have allocated 8 Squadrons for Lilly Dive Bombing squadrons/training. Set up a centralized training facility at Fusan. Currently, only have two squadrons flying dive bombers, and neither is full strength. Skill 70 pilots are trickling into each and they are currently working on Naval Search while the planes repair and pilots arrive. 7 of the 8 Squadrons will go to the defense of the SRA/Burma while the 8th will go to Rabaul area. Subject to change.

A couple of Ida squadrons are training low naval bombing. I have 170 skill 70 low naval army pilots in the pools now.

Speedysteve -> RE: Manila Falls (5/7/2016 7:21:19 PM)

Interesting on the Lily DB. Do you have this amount of Sentai focussed on it as you're PDU Off or because you rate it anyway? I've just decided to produce 30 per month in my game and aim to have 3 x Sentai equipped at present (PDU On)

That is just about what I'm doing. It's a bit more one dimensional than the other 2E IJAAF bombers as the load has so little effect against land targets per plane/pilot lost.

The Peggy(T) is probably the best for dual use, and is quicker to target than the others, so more have potential to get through.

Speedysteve -> RE: Manila Falls (5/7/2016 7:56:51 PM)

Yup I'm R&Ding 3 x 30 Peggy T facs on them but only 1 is fully repaired and producing as of 8/43

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/7/2016 9:13:12 PM)

PDU off, only two Sentai go Peggy T.

11 Sentai go Lilly IIb.

Lilly IIb is a good plane, comes early, and flies from a size 2 runway, with a range of 9-11, and can hit destroyers. Pilots easily trained ahead of time.

I doubt I have enough production to do all 11 Sentai, but I might if losses are low...

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/8/2016 12:26:43 PM)

I got the turn back to Jocke...spent a fair amount of time on the turn but not as much as I wanted to.

So much to do, so many notes to keep track of, so many things to double check.

The first group of major Iboats for the West Coast have left today. There are some on station now with plentiful fuel.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/8/2016 5:26:39 PM)

2nd Week of Dec, 1942

Wolves are in the sheep fold!

Japanese destroyers off Diamond Harbor take advantage of the low moonlight (14%) and savage an Allied ASW task force. But we are after bigger game, far bigger.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/8/2016 5:31:47 PM)

Not the bigger game we wanted...four of the pesky little critters are dispatched.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/8/2016 5:33:24 PM)

Still no joy, but we need to get out of here pronto...

[image]local://upfiles/44178/0FC7EC696546479BA001F572DF546321.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/8/2016 5:42:04 PM)

My night search spotted one CV group, but none of the destroyer squadrons moved to engage...there are 3 CV groups here![X(]

Goodness gracious. All my destroyers safely back or close enough to safety. Chittagong bombed heavily by Allied bombers. I am seriously thinking of stuffing Chittagong full of fighters for a day as the runway is pristine. Would rely up destroyers to protect the base...

Is is doable...all the damaged fighters would likely be destroyed if the Allies tried to play games.

I wonder?

[image]local://upfiles/44178/C465175000784786A068168F815DD4F5.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/8/2016 5:59:10 PM)

I have wiped out two dedicated ASW groups here, and with the low moonlight am thinking of sending in a sub rush against his carriers...the lousy British are good at ASW, and there are a lot of planes flying ASW off those carriers so it wouldn't be pretty.

Only the western sub has an DL on it...so I probably could get in and out without too many losses.

Something to ponder.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/1C8513466A07448490B843E60C0C0DE0.jpg[/image]

I am guessing my destroyers reacted to the MTBs rather than the CVs.

I checked the name of those two KV...flowers. The Fritillary is nicer I think while the Genista is yellow and I don't really like yellowish flowers that much.

Sutlej is a river in the Punjab. I wonder if there is any sport fishing there? In the 1970's I met an Indian hunter that shot the then largest female bengal tiger. He gave me a claw or a tooth from her.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/9/2016 2:18:55 AM)

Ok, I am doing it. I stuffed Chittagong with 300 fighters. 9 Destroyers protecting the port behind a screen of two hexes with freshly dropped sub minefields.

Bloodbath tomorrow.[:)] But for whom?

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/9/2016 5:42:29 PM)

2nd Week of Dec, 1942

Chittagong, the scene of big dogfights...not a single Hurricane actually swept.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/CAF5AB11B10D466BBFB3C76F6DDE1128.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/9/2016 5:44:47 PM)

Always happy to trade close to 1-1 in a defensive fight. Allies have fresh lightning and P40 squadrons to throw in, plus carrier planes if they want to.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/EDDD36AD8A8349459C1714EC7A64F067.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/9/2016 5:52:16 PM)

Although supplies show red at Chittagong, there is 5000 supply in the port plenty for troops and planes.

The worry is a British bombardment.

Dec 14, 1942

Half over...

Four or five or six waves of Allied bombers run into Chittagong, and are met by a strong CAP. Unfortunately many withdraw due to no escorts.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/10/2016 8:28:32 PM)

Allied sweeps come last and the cooperation is really great.

One sweep of Lightnings and 40s and a second sweep of 4 P40 squadrons. Well done, Allies.

No damage on the runways, and only 6 planes lost on the ground. I suspect the Allies will sweep again tomorrow and hold off on the bombers.

Still, a good day. I will need to decide on whether we fight in the air here again. My thinking is yes -- and I can structure my fighter defense to anti fighters only.

A lot of Allied PT strength is here....as planned.

Here is Fritillary.

Two Allied Carrier Task Forces are here.

This is so much better than I had planned.[;)]

[image]local://upfiles/44178/94DEB3CA6A6D4C969D40022094ED49E1.jpg[/image]

I could strike at them, but I prefer keeping my forces intact. I fear severe losses on my part might encourage the Allies to actually do something. So, as long as they are here I am happy. Everything is subordinate to the West Coast Op.

I will take pains to show more planes and perhaps prepping troops for here...let him think I am in a buildup. The more he ships here, the better I like it. I might come to change my opinion on that, but for now I am pleased as punch.

Well, I did know it was not named after a campfire pancake.[:D] Pretty picture, the 12.7 cm hits on her must really have left a mark!

Dec 14th, 1942

The British come calling at Chittagong.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/14/2016 1:23:22 AM)

A second engagement and we strike with a torpedo.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/14/2016 1:24:32 AM)

A third fight during the daytime and we swap destroyers I think.

Allied CVs TF just outside of Diamond Harbor. I am not sure if any of the Allied ships hit minefields....

Slow turns for a few more days...

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 2:58:13 PM)

Dec 16, 1942

Back and running turns.[:)]

Today, I thought I would test the Allies air strength in the Bay of Bengal and set two squadrons on naval attack: one Betty and one Val (model 1). Good pilots. Heavy escorts, the Betties at 20K and the Vals at 15K flying from different bases.

In the morning a strike at the shipping in Calcutta...

That is my last squadron of Oscar Ic's. Still using them![;)]
