Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 3:00:24 PM)

Forgot to mention no night naval action, other than some sub skirmishes, in the Bay of Bengal.

Batter, batter, swing! It's a hit!! A single to right field in Calcutta!

Clouds are protecting the heavy ship concentration below Diamond Harbor.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 3:02:21 PM)

In the afternoon a strike at the shipping off Diamond Harbor...the Repulse and the Washington are missed by the Betties, but here is a third chance. Oh well, maybe with the Vals as they target the carriers...Enterprise, Hornet and Illustrious.

I guess the geniuses in intel will remove the Enterprise from the sunk ship list now, and rename her Wasp.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 3:09:22 PM)

Just not to be! We got a lot of swings in, 13, and obviously we need to work on our hitting more. Flak is a real killer here, as Jocke built his TFs well.

The Vals take it on the chin after dropping their bombs with 21 downed...I guess I should have upgraded this squadron to Judies a month ago.[:-]

Another invasion...dropped off by APDs.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 3:14:21 PM)

Big picture, of big Allied ship concentration!

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 3:19:00 PM)

Lots of plane losses, especially from the groups escorting the Betties....two long strikes in the same day.

But, let us see if this puts a little caution into the Allies here. I have plenty of fresh strike squadrons, and have shown I can penetrate Allied CAP. A few good hits today would have really put Jocke back I think, pity.

Can't complain though...we are another day closer to the West Coast. California dreaming... or is that Canada dreaming?

[image]local://upfiles/44178/69C8F8B07A4448B28E33B2771284FF8C.jpg[/image]

In both attacks on the Allied CVs, the Allied fighters got pursuit attacks in.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 3:25:33 PM)

Moonlight is in the 60's, and waxing...so I will be careful here...even though I have a force of heavy cruisers adjacent to Ramree...

I think the only way to beat this force is during low moonlight with destroyers, and delay him with the use of minefields and submarines. Perhaps sweeps near his ships to catch some bleeding CAP.

Remember the goal here is merely to distract and delay...and to get the Allies to reinforce their successes in this theater with even more troops and ships from the West Coast.

I have succeeded here beyond my wildest dreams.[:)]

Lokasenna -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 4:29:11 PM)

Heh I like how the Type 91 is redesignated from "18 in" to "45 cm" - flavor! That's more like a squibber up the third base line, though...

Nice escorts, but it looked costly.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 7:22:03 PM)

3rd Week of Dec, 1942

A couple of good attacks in China, three of them in fact. The Kienko road block is down to one Corp with AV, so hopefully I can cause them to retreat. 1-1 today there, almost 2-1.

Allies bombard Chittagong with slow battleships and cruisers.

Installed some new hardware on my computer, and disabled my sound...so no idea if he hit any of the mines.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 7:24:26 PM)

Allies just miss a 1-1...

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/16/2016 7:27:38 PM)

Looks like we might have gotten one ship with a mine...

Not a single plane lost at Chittagong...I sent my ships to protect Cox and Akyab this turn...oh well.

It was costly...but I will pay the price if it distracts and or encourages Jocke.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/17/2016 6:03:15 PM)

3rd Week of December, 1942

Getting to be crunch time!

I sweep Oz, what a delicious base to hit but I don't think I can do it. Quite the troop buildup here. I bet those subs are upgrading.

Cloncurry to the west has 4 units and 268 guns...no point bombing there anymore.

Air Losses looked bad on my sweep, but turned out to be 1-1. Not great, but another distraction. I don't like sweeping at such long range...

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/17/2016 6:07:46 PM)

I am thinking on leaving Chittagong. Forts are now 2, Allies have a substantial advantage...the jungle is half the stacking limit or more.

I really don't want to be forced out of Chittagong and suffer all the retreat losses...

However, perhaps I can hold on for one more fight and then escape? I think that might be too clever by half.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/17/2016 6:13:11 PM)

China...the Kienko roadblock is very stubborn.

I think one of the keys to holding China is for China to setup positions like this. Non base hex defense in good terrain with plenty of time to build up the forts...the key I think is planning the retreats so not to really violate the stacking levels.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/17/2016 6:15:19 PM)

Sinking sounds were heard today, in the afternoon, but I think it might have been the Sewers DD that hit a mine previously and not this CL.

But you never know.

savelius2 -> RE: Manila Falls (5/17/2016 7:03:22 PM)

Well, what do you benefit from holding Chittagong? It seems like you've largely achieved your objective of drawing his attention to India. Does risking another reinforced attack benefit you in any real fashion? What happens if you hold, do you gain something other than the opportunity to face another attack in a couple days? On the other hand, are you going to have trouble withdrawing troops if you get forced out of the hex?

In general I think that you're playing a pretty risky game right now strategically. You've got a bunch of troops in India that are facing heavy opposition without (by design) much support, and you're about to dump a bunch of troops in the US that might be facing a one way trip. I'd be a bit more cautious in India as a result. But you're generally doing extremely well, so maybe risk is justified.

Interesting.

Won't get the turn finished, so I will sleep on it.[:)]

I have my retreat planned from Chittagong...just have to execute it.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/18/2016 2:55:57 PM)

I have to switch hats and finish off this turn for Jocke....

I am really close to starting the loading process for the West Coast....I will miss my Dec 25 landing date by a little I think.

Have pondered and pondered Chittagong and deicided to flee into the jungle there. Hopefully a little misdirection will make the Allies think I am merely juggling units.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/18/2016 4:27:30 PM)

Banzai!

Operation Deathstar Killer launched...with no DL.

Combined ops: subs, mines, surface ships. IJNAF and IJAAF providing CAP...very heavy night time search.

We will hope for storms...because moonlight is good.

Knowing my luck, I will blunder into POW, Washington and Repulse instead of the CVs...but I am betting he has embedded the BB into the CV task forces...heck there are three CV TFs here![X(]

[image]local://upfiles/44178/FE6130B8A80A470A8D265BD65FFB2E04.jpg[/image]
The purpose of the I and R boat presence is to raise DLs...as is the night search from many different bases and areas as far away as Rangoon. Multiple locations will hopefully allow some to fly even if the area has predominately bad weather.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/18/2016 5:37:45 PM)

I would like to point out that never once have I written "Banzai" or anything like it in an email to my opponent.

Usually I don't say anything.

Usually Jocke flips the turn faster....I wonder if something is up? Could be fireworks!

Canoerebel -> RE: Manila Falls (5/18/2016 5:49:00 PM)

Some Allied players are allergic to "Banai!" I am. It was a condition I developed about 12 years ago, when I stumbled across a game called "Uncommon Valor." :)

By the way, your pending operation has to be among the most interesting ongoing right now. I'm enjoying reading both AARs alot, so I don't comment to any real extent in either. But I'm reading both (well, right now only yours) raptly. Thanks for posting in such detail. The abundance of maps and diagrams makes it very reader-friendly.

Two things I might point out: (1) be thankful you don't have crsutton posting about his dreams; and (2) I promise not to make any predictions as to when the war will end.

3rd Week of Dec, 1942

Let down! Oh well, I felt bad about risking my western surface fleet in such a way...but the opportunity will present itself again, better when the moon is gone.

But I figured I don't have many more chances here as soon the Allies will have Chittagong, so I swung for a double.

My SAG made the allocated position, but night naval search spotted the ships hiding past Diamond Harbor to the NNE, and I wisely wouldn't allow my ships to go there. Nothing spotted to the west, and the Allies didn't react into me so all is good I guess.

Nice counter battery at Chittagong. I need to start showing troops moving into Chittagong to belay Allied suspicions about my true intent here.

It will start soon. Very soon!

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/18/2016 6:00:33 PM)

During the night I spotted lots, and lots of fleets here. There are also over 100 4E beasts operating here. Come and get me you Allied dogs![;)]

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/18/2016 7:54:54 PM)

3rd Week of Dec, 1942

Allies sweep Chittagong, where my forces are moving out. I have other troops moving in, at least in rest mode so they aren't getting far.

No CAP from the Japanese despite over 100 planes present.

I think he will bomb and sweep heavily tomorrow. I could trap them, or just grin and take it.

The neat thing about plane coordination is that it is significantly worse the first day the base is targeted and significantly better the second. Planes don't fly, or Sweeps come last or in the PM etc. The lower the DL the better for the defenders and any potential CAP trap put up.

I will have to decide here.

I lost 10 lcu VP for the day, the Allies 20 with the attacks, not reported, in China.
Anyhow, the Allies surprise me with another attack and we manage a 1-2, but I am sure Jocke likes the destroyed unit count in the battle report. My troops were all moving which I am sure hurt their performance, but forts didn't go down which is an important thing.

I dropped 40 more mines here tonight and might move in during the night although the moon is full, so I might just stop playing games here and seriously protect my forces.

Lowpe -> RE: Manila Falls (5/18/2016 7:57:34 PM)

Jocke used xakl to drop a lot of supply here overnight. One of my planes got in a "hit" but you know what that means...an increase to the DL and that is about it.

This would be such a fun playground, if not for the West Coast.
