02. Gort's Tactical (or Strategic) Error.

CW 7-3 inf, 5-3 mil and 4-1 garrison were forced to return to Great Britain.

The CW decided to break the 7-5 mech corps in Belgium into a 2-6 mech and 2-5 mot divisions.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War: Japanese Aggression (9/8/2015 2:00:45 AM)

02. Nov/Dec 1939. The Pacific and China.

On the first impulse of the turn the Japanese took a naval and sent two invasion tasks forces out. One was sent into the South China Sea and its target was Malay. The second was sent into the Bay of Bengal with a target Calcutta or Rangoon depending on what the CW did during their impulse. Of course, this meant a Japanese DOW on the CW in their next impulse assuming acceptable weather and acceptable weather is what they got. On their next impulse (i.e., axis #7), the weather was fine across the globe. So the Japanese DOW the CW and launched invasions of Malaya and Rangoon (the CW had railed an Indian corps to Calcutta their previous impulse). In addition to these invasions the Japanese also made a push in northern China to close the gap to the communist.

The Japanese DOW on CW resulted in two more chits added to the US Japanese entry pool.

2. Nov/Dec 1939. Axis #7. Land Combat.

1. In Malaya, the Japanese land adjacent to the defenders of Singapore. With minimal shore bombardment added, this invasion is made automatic. The Japanese plan to capture the fort their next impulse, however the turn ends before they get a chance.

2. The invasion of Rangoon, Burma is successful but costs the Japanese two division. However, the capture of Rangoon results in the complete conquest of Burma by the Japanese.

3. The Japanese attack in northern China is an utter failure. A roll of 3 on the 2D10 assault CRT is never a good thing.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War: Japanese Aggression (9/8/2015 2:09:19 AM)

02. China. North Temperate.

The Japanese strategy for this theater may have to shift from one of expect destruction of Mao and his communist to one of an aggressive defensive posture. The Japanese militarist are learning that they don't have the resources to be aggressive in more than two theaters at one time. This turn, they tried to be aggressive in three.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War: Japanese Aggression (9/8/2015 2:12:41 AM)

02. Nov/Dec 1939. China. South Monsoon.

One area where the Japanese aren't aggressive is in southern China against the nationalist. However, they were too docile this turn as they "forgot" to march in and take an unoccupied Hong Kong. A mistake that the no-name commander of this force will never make again. Well, a mistake that his predecessor won't because this no-name commander did what Japanese commanders did in WW2 when they were shamed.

02. Nov/Dec 1939. Malaya and the South China Sea.

Unfortunately for the Japanese the turn ended before Yamamato could disembark and help his marines to finish off and capture Singapore.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War: Japanese Aggression (9/8/2015 2:18:20 AM)

02. Nov/Dec 1939. Yamamoto.

Yamamoto and a capable task force dock at Batavia (NEI) and are ready next turn to capture Singapore and finish the conquest of Malaya, which will bring two more non-oil resources back to Japan to feed their hungry war machine.

02. Nov/Dec 1939. Burma. Bay of Bengal.

On the allied impulse following the Japanese DOW on the CW (and invasion of Rangoon, Burma), the RN moved in the an infantry division to reinforce Singapore. The CW, of course, declined to initiate a naval combat but the IJN did and was successful. Three rounds of naval combat followed.

(By the way, the successful Japanese invasion of Rangoon resulted in a captured oil point for the Japanese).

2. Nov/Dec 1939. Bay of Bengal. Naval Combat. Rounds 1 and 2 (of 3).

The first two rounds were clear victories for the Japanese with their carrier finding and pounding RN heavy cruisers. Two heavy RN cruisers were sunk including the one carrying the 1-4 CW infantry division. So, no reinforcements for Singapore. 3 other RN heavy cruisers were damaged.

02. Nov/Dec 1939. Bay of Bengal. Naval Combat. Round 3 of 3.

On the third round the RN won the search and had enough surprise points to avoid combat. If fact, that was the order but the naval commander in charge disobeyed that order (i.e., he hit the wrong button). Instead he used the surprise points to force a surface action and had a shot to sink the Japanese amphibious unit. He barely missed but did managed to damage it. It cost the RN, however, another heavy cruiser sunk and another one damaged.

Combat ended after this round with neither side locating the other to force a forth.

02. Nov/Dec 1939. Finnish Borderlands.

The Soviets are seriously reconsidering not demanding the Finnish borderlands. Right now they're learning towards making that demand, especially with Germany tied up with the English and French in the west.

02. Nov/Dec 1939. Economic Reports.

Germany loses 2 PPs from RAF strategic bombing.

The CW gains 3 PPs from "food in flames".

02. Nov/Dec 1939. US Entry Options.

The selects,

(1) Resources to the Western Allies.

(2) Relocate fleet to Pearl Harbor.

(3) US East Coast Escorts.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War: Japanese Aggression (9/8/2015 2:59:52 AM)

02. Nov/Dec 1939. (Trade, Jan/Feb 1940).

(1) The USA sends two oil to CW, for saving in Canada.

(2) Also, the USA sends the Philippine non-oil resource to China. They forgot to make this agreement last turn, though they selected (last turn) resources to China. A boneheaded mistake on the US player's part last turn. A mistake that was corrected this turn but resulted in 1 less PP, and more importantly, 1 less BP for China last turn.

brian brian -> RE: Global War: Japanese Aggression (9/8/2015 3:15:16 PM)

Going back to set-up etc. ...

Once the Germans temporarily lost their only tanks on the western front, the Dutch could have defended on the resource hex, allowing the BEF to land in the Dutch ports subsequently. This only works when that hex can't be dis-organized by Ground Strike and then over-run.

re: Defending the French Alps - if the French put a 3-3 in the hex north of Nice, the Italians can get as high as perhaps a +7.5 against a single unit there, using Balbo, 5-4 MOT, 3-3 ART, and most of their planes, depending on their unit draws of course. Maybe better with an admittedly lucky Ground Strike. But if the Italians crack that line, their REServe units start the ooze process and the southern front becomes an ever growing distraction for the French, particularly if a few 4 movement point German INF arrive and the Germans are active in the Benelux countries in 1939.

A better French defense is to put the MTN unit in that hex (the most valuable one for the Italians to take), and any other INF in Nice with the Syrian INF reinforcing Nice (the easiest hex for Italy to attack, using Shore Bombardment) on the first impulse. That pretty much shuts down any Italian design on the Alps. Attacking out of Turin into the NW Alps hex is not worth much for the Italians as they then still have to crack a 2nd mountain hex later, from only one hex. A 3-3 INF can hold that hex.

Deploying the Italian lift in Albania would tip some scales for many CW players to launch war on Italy. Their odds of success in a Port Strike go up in a minor port, and it would be challenging for the Italians to ever get a dis-organized TRS back out of Albania later.

The normal place the CW deploys the at-start Indian INF is in Calcutta as the usual risk of war with Japan is low, but the chance of Ghandi embarrassing the Raj via an uprising in Calcutta is there. Digging a PART out of that hex can be a challenge if it has any combat factors. (best put 0 factor PART in woods or jungle hexes, btw)

Brian, thanks for tactical advice. I definitely need all I can get. By the way, I can tell that you're a very experienced WiF player and one tough opponent. How long have you been playing WiF? Do you ever lose?

brian brian -> RE: Global War: Japanese Aggression (9/9/2015 1:09:45 AM)

I've been playing since the 4th Edition of the game starting in 1989. Face-to-face opportunities have waxed and waned over the years; self-employment and a 2-hour commute have made it a few years since I've been able to push the cardboard around. Maybe next year. I usually have a solitaire experimental game of some type going on my laptop, and the waning of daylight the next several months will give me some time to explore my latest one - an Axis no-Spain-but-Gibraltar-assault strategy. I've never built out the entire Kriegsmarine before, though not the Plan Z pieces (yet)...

You have an interesting game going. It will be interesting to see how the Euro-Axis exploit the Pacific situation.

AllenK -> RE: Global War: Japanese Aggression (9/9/2015 7:55:08 PM)

I agree with Brian Brian. Well done for running a different and interesting Japanese strategy.

As an aside, I appreciate your comments about other commitments making playing against an opponent difficult but you do seem to be able to post pretty often and are often online at similar times to either Mayhemizer or myself (or Orm and Warspite1). Have you considered playing by email in the way we have done? The great thing is, it can be as fast or slow as you like and/or time permits. I'd sure be happy to throw down the gauntlet.

Thanks! I appreciate the time you've both taken to follow and comment on my play.

I'm flattered by the offer of a game and I really wish I could play this wonderful game against another human opponent. However, my work situation makes this impractical. Though, maybe when I retire, hopefully in a decade or so, MWiF and this community will be still be active and I could play such a game then. Honestly, that's a bit depressing thinking I'll have to wait 10-years for such, but my "job" is my "day job" and as much as I love MWiF, it's my hobby. [:(]

3. Jan/Feb 1940. Victory Totals

A winter turn. A short turn lasting 6 impulses with the axis moving first, the allies moving second and each side getting 3 impulses.

Though the turn was short both Germany and Japan increased their victory points by 1 each at the expense of the CW, who lost 2 victory points.

03. Jan/Feb 1940. Antwerp, Belgium.

One of the two victory points that changed hands this turn was Antwerp, Belgium, which was captured by Germany on the first impulse, even though it was rain in the north temperate. At the end of last turn Antwerp was defended by the British 7-4 mot corps and a Belgium 3-4 cavalry corps. This cavalry corps "disappeared" when Belgium surrendered to the Germans leaving the CW 7-4 motorized corps alone in Antwerp. Though raining, the Germans decided that the chance to take Antwerp was just too good to pass up. They did managed to take the city but at the loss of a valuable mil unit. In addition to the mil unit, the Luftwaffe lost two fighter units in the air fight with the CW for ground support.
