Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. USN. North Atlantic.

The USN beefs up allied convoy escorts in the North Atlantic. They decide not to try to initiate a naval combat.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/26/2016 7:24:07 PM)

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. German U-boats. North Atlantic.

However, because the USA added naval units to the North Atlantic, the German player as the non-phasing player is given a chance to initiate a naval combat. German u-boats do but it's the allies that get the upper hand and clear the North Atlantic of all axis sub units except for an Italian sub unit in the 0-box.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/26/2016 7:27:02 PM)

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Western Allies. Italian Coast.

This leaves the Italian Coast where a very large Allied armada has assemble. This armada contains now only the troops of the four assault forces (Orange, Blue, Red and Green) but additional troops for follow-up landings in later impulses. No way are the allies risking a naval combat, so the USA declines the opportunity to try to initiate one.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Germany. Italian Coast.

However, Germany hoping for the chance to sink Eisenhower's HQ or key amphibious ships does, as the non-phasing player, decide to try to initiate a naval (air) combat. The Luftwaffe flies in an additional fighter unit and the traitorous Vichy fly in an additional Nav unit. Fortunately for the allies, they spot these axis air units and are able to drive them away before they get close to the allied fleet and any transports or amphibious units.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Western Allies. Operation Anvil and Hammer. Ground Strike 1.

Per landing air strikes of axis positions all across Italy begin with a combined RN/USA Air corps ground strike on axis units in Leghorn. Not a good start for the allies.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Western Allies. Operation Anvil and Hammer. Ground Strike 2.

While none of the allies ground strikes are directed against any hexes assaulted by the allies this impulse they are made against adjacent stacks in the hopes of disorganizing out of supply German land units for easy destruction over the remainder of this turn (assuming Operation Anvil and Hammer is successful).

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Western Allies. Operation Anvil and Hammer. Ground Strike 4.

Probably the most critical and the most successful of the four allied ground strikes.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/26/2016 7:38:06 PM)

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. RAF Ground Support. Air to Air.

All four allied assault groups were provide some ground support. Only support for German was, or even could be, opposed by Luftwaffe fighters. While the RAF loses a carrier fighter unit, the RAF support does manage to get through.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Operation Anvil and Hammer. Land Combat 1 (Green Assault Force).

Well, I guess if one must roll a 3 during land combat it's on an attack that's automatic. Note that 13 naval factors of bombardment were given to this attack.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Operation Anvil and Hammer. Land Combat 2 (Orange Assault Force).

4 air and 9 naval factors of support were provide. No losses and no disorganized, while far from a given (82%) was a nice result for the orange assault force to achieve.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Operation Anvil and Hammer. Land Combat 3 (Blue).

7 air and 8 naval factors worth of support made this attack automatic.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/26/2016 7:48:20 PM)

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Operation Anvil and Hammer. Land Combat 3 (Red).

5 air and 8 naval factors of support made that attack nearly automatic. Though a roll of 2 (1% chance) would have resulted in the loss of the division and the disorganization of the 7-4 mot. Fortunately for the USA that didn't happen.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #2. Japan. ChiComm. China Sea.

Japan uses their combine to get a leader, Terauchi, back into northern China, save what he can of the northern Japanese armies and stop the ChiComms.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #2. Japan. Philippines. South China Sea.

To MacArthur's extreme frustration the Japanese also used their combine to replace their loss in Manila with a slightly stronger unit.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #2. IJN, USN. China Sea.

The Japanese elect to not try to initiate a naval combat but the USN, as the non-phasing player, chooses to do so and successfully initiates a battle.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #2. USN. China Sea, Round 1.

A USN bomber unit did get through but is forced by AA to abort before it can reach Terauchi's transport.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #2. IJN, USN. South China Sea

The Japanese elected to not to try to initiate a naval combat but the USN, as the non-phasing player, chooses to do so and successfully initiates one. A major one that is.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #2. USN. South China Sea. Naval Battle, Round 2 (concluded).

Both sides failed to maintain contact after this second round so the battle in the South China Sea ended.

In the end, Japan's combine while successful on land came at some cost on the sea.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #2. Italy. Desert Army. East Med.

Sabering rattling by the Italian desert army. That's really the only saber that the Italians have left to rattle.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #2. Germany. Northern Italy. Southern France. Vichy is Collapsed.

In order to rail von Leeb into northern Italy and get their northern army in Italy back in supply Germany had to collapse Vichy.

Interesting oversite by the Germans. They railed a garrison into Marseilles but left Lyons empty with a French partisan sitting right next to city and ready to enter cutting (again) rail from Germany to northern Italy. Germany war planners in the West have become lazy and careless. Maybe a stint on the Eastern Front will whip them in shape.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Axis #2. Germany. The Eastern Front.

Speaking of the Eastern Front, this is what it looked like at the end of this impulse. Germany is trying to go all out and deal the Soviets a mortal blow and then be able to shift most of their focus to the Western Allies.
