rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/25/2016 5:04:04 AM)

Turn 23. May/June 1943. Italy.

1. German units in Italy out of supply.

2. Pola is US controlled and Trieste only occuppied by 1-5 cav division. If the Western Allies get to move first they should be able to take Trieste from Pola.

3. Wait ... Rome, which is not invadeable by sea, is defended only by artillery division but the coastal hex adjacent to Rome is US controlled. This means the allies can land a stack adjacent to Rome, attack Rome and take the city. No Anzio here.

4. The allies can cut the majority of German units off from any near-term chance of being resupplied if the make two amphibious landings. One directly south of Venice and the other northwest of Civitavecchina.

5. The USA has an o-chit and can/will take a super combine. The CW doesn't, but would take a combine to make use of their lift (which absolutely necessary) and still manage to land 1 stack amphibiously.

6. What a learning experience this is for me as the axis player. And what a colossal mess I made of things in Italy and for Germany in general by my screw-up. When it looked as though Germany may have had the Soviet Union on the ropes this may be what Stalin needs to not only survive but turn the tables on the Germans in the Soviet Union.

7. All of this is predicated on the allies winning the initiative and getting fine weather in the Med. It's Jul/Aug so the chance of fine weather is a given I think? With respect to the initiative the allies have a +2 and win ties, which leads one to think they should be a shoe in for the initiative. However, the allies were in the same exact situation last turn and lose the initiative even after requesting a re-roll. Needless to say the roll(s) for the initiative and the weather roll will be critical for both sides.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Trade.

The German player depressed about his screw-up with Italy deleted his trade agreement of 3 non-oil and 1 oil resource to Italy. No other chances to trade from last turn were made.

Initiative and Weather.

To be continued ... what's a little suspense among friends. [;)]

It's my bedtime ... [>:]

Courtenay -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/25/2016 4:22:13 PM)

What Italian units in Italy were destroyed?

Courtenay -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/25/2016 4:22:43 PM)

Rome is very interesting. If the Allies take Rome this turn, nothing interesting happens. If the Allies do not take Rome, then the Axis will liberate Italy (sending control of unZOCed hexes back to the Axis.) Then, when the Allies take Rome on a later turn, all Italian units will be removed from the game during the conquest step.

As I say, this is a very strange rule.

AlbertN -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/25/2016 7:03:15 PM)

To liberate it's a choice though. Germany / Axis is asked if they want to liberate it.

Ah, thank you. I had forgotten that. (See my sig.) Of course, if German does not liberate, Italy and Germany no longer cooperate.

Probably simpler to just have the Allies take Rome. [:)]

One comment on the Chinese situation: The main priority for the Communists should be to retake Sian while holding the mountains that it already has. Only after Sian has been recaptured should they think of attacking east.

Mao will take that under advisement. However, Mao has a way of doing things his own way so we'll see if he acts on this excellent advice or not. [;)]

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Initiative.

The allies, this time, easily win the initiative on the first roll and elect to move first. And now for the weather ...

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Weather.

The weather is just fine. Now, what is the allied plan to exploit the axis chaos in Italy due to Italy's sudden, and somewhat unexpected, departure from the war?

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Allied Planning Document. Operation Anvil and Hammer.

Four prong allied operation intended to:

(1) Capture Rome.

(2) Capture Trieste.

(3) Cut off and keep out of supply the German armies in the bottom 2/3's of Italy (proper).

This operation requires that the USA take a super-combine (they have 1 o-chit) and the CW takes a combine. The only error in the planning was CW units is two assault forces. While the plan properly accounted for the fact that the CW would only have 3 land moves, and thus could only use 3 units in the four assault forces, it "overlooked" the fact that the combine limited the CW to 1 land combat. So, the CW 2-4 Marine Division originally assigned to the Blue Assault force was left at sea and did not participate in the initial phase of Operation Anvil and Hammer.

I will say that doing an AAR takes a lot of effort just in doing the screen caps and posts. For me, this has resulted in less than stellar strategic and operations planning. This was one instance in which I took the time to plan out a major operation to the detail shown here. I have to say that this was a most enjoyable experience and I need to do more planning of this type.

So now that Operation Anvil and Hammer has been planned, allied high command await the outcome (success, failure, partial success, partial failure) of their carefully planned operation. General Eisenhower, though his HQ is directly part of one of the (orange) assault forces, was heard saying that a private on Blue Beach or a corporal on Red Beach now have more influenced over the success of this operation than he does.

Plans of Operation Anvil and Hammer were shared with Stalin in hopes of also stressing and streching the Germans on the Eastern Front as this operation unveils.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. USSR. Ground Strike 1.

With Operation Anvil and Hammer unfolding in the West, Comrade Stalin orders Soviet air and land forces to push back against the Nazi invaders. This includes three ground strikes against German HQ and / or armor concentrations. The first of three ground strikes produce good results.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. USSR. Southern Front.

Though the Red Army made no attacks, they did manage to liberate Krasnador (Black Sea, north of Novorosslysk still Soviet controlled) and Saratov (4 hexes northeast of Stalingrad). The presence of the Germans in the south has blocked flow of several oil resources points needed at Soviet factories. So, not only holding the Germans on this front but forcing them back is vital to Soviet longterm war production. The question is, do the Soviets have the forces necessary to do this? Or, will the Germans continue their advance?

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. South China Sea.

The USN send a 6 carrier strike force into the South China Sea with the objective of finding and sinking IJN carriers and other capital ships currently operating there. Unfortunately for the USN, the scout planes fail to find the Japanese.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. USA. Manila, Philippines. Ground Strike.

Not to be overshadowed by the news and events happening in Italy, MacArthur decides to press operations in the Philippines, even in the rain. USA ground strikes successfully disorganized both IJA armies defending Manila. Now, there's now stopping MacArthur from ordering a land combat to take the city even in the rain.

In the north Monsoon, the chance next impulse for fine weather is only 10%. Rain is 30%, but most pressing is that storm is 60%. Also, there's a big fleet of in the Bismarck sea containing cruisers and battleships. Though I know the rule that Manila doesn't border the Bismarck Sea and, therefore, can't be bombarded from that area I seemed to have "forgotten" that when deciding on carrying out a land combat against Manila. Oh well ...

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. USA. Manila, Philippines. Land Combat.

So I was reminded when given the chance to assign naval bombardment that the Bismarck Sea isn't adjacent to Manila. So the odds with HQ support from MacArthur are 7.273 A. With two units defending Manila, the pre-roll chance of success was an estimated 47.7%. Basically, slightly less than a coin flip. The odds of losing three units (modified roll of 14) was an estimated 5.7%. This attack, will fails and fortunately only results in the loss of one unit, should not have been made.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. USA. China Sea.

The USA sends air units into the China Sea to attempt to disrupt Japanese convoys operating there. Also, USA fighters are sent in to harass Japanese Nav air units. However, the USA air units are able to locate any Japanese units.

rkr1958 -> RE: Global War AAR in Pictures (5/26/2016 7:16:40 PM)

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. RN. Arctic Ocean.

Allied naval moves produce a number of potential sea conflicts. One is in the Arctic Ocean. However, the RN has no desire to try to engage German u-boats there. And since no additional allied naval or air units were added this impulse to the Arctic Ocean the Germans as the non-phasing player are not given the opportunity to try to initiate a naval combat.

Turn 24. Jul/Aug 1943. Allied #1. Italian Intercept. Cape St. Vincent.

An Italian sub successfully intercepts a USN CVL moving through that area headed for the Italian Coast. The CVL decides to fight through the area and the Italian sub unit is defeated. Also, Cape St. Vincent is cleared of any axis units allowing unfettered movement by allied naval units through that area.
