You didn't quote the entire saying AllenK:

Never disturb a Hornet's nest unless there is a numbnuts in charge of said nest - in which case you can poke the thing into oblivion without fear of being stung (Anon 1798).

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (9/21/2017 8:02:18 PM)

The Italians send a FTR to the West Med 1-box.

They send a strong (for them) task force into the West Med. Do the Allies wish to intercept?

No thank-you

warspite1 -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (9/21/2017 8:31:24 PM)

Is the plan for anymore action this evening old boy? If so I can stick around - please let me know.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (9/21/2017 8:38:06 PM)

The task force stops in the 1-box and loads the GARR from Tripoli.

Across the other side of the world, Japanese TRANS and AMPH bring the two MAR corps from Menado to Port Arthur. A CA sails an INF Div from Port Moresby to Tsingtao.

The Italians decline combat in Italian Coast and West Med.

Do the Allies wish to initiate hostilities?

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (9/21/2017 8:51:50 PM)

Germany ground strikes hex 57,56 NE of Odessa.

The results are less than optimal.

Italy moves a Libyan TERR back to Gabes and Milan MIL 1 hex SW on the French-Spanish border.

Over to Mayhemizer for the rest of the impulse.

Well going for A2A was always risky, but with a +4 and -3 I figured I would kill a couple of aircraft even if some of the attackers then got through - and the Japanese can't afford the losses. But then.....

Orm will be distinctly unimpressed [:(]

Yes, Singapore is fine.

Such things happens.

Air combat is indeed risky and there is usually little to gain when defending against port strikes. So may I suggest, for the future, that the option 'avoid combat' is considered as a alternative?

Edit: Another alternative, for surprise points, during port strikes is saving three points to select the target suffering the X.

warspite1

I think that 'avoid Combat' is often appropriate but given where we are in this game, if I had to do this again then I would not seek to avoid combat. With a 1 vs 10 throw and with Japan in the position they are in (resource wise), I believe that would be totally the wrong decision.

However, what was also totally the wrong decision was putting all surprise points on the air to air combat. Yes, the dice were unlucky, but yes, I should have considered that they were possible - and what the consequences would be. It's not as though I hadn't had recent experience - I had actually lost a battle with a +4 modifier earlier in the game so should have been even more aware of the potential pitfalls.

So, as a learning point, if I was faced with exactly the same circumstances again, I would either make one or perhaps two (at very most) tweaks to the A2A table, and then maximise AA fire and/or get the choice.

What is clear is that, with the very lucky 1 vs 10 throws in my favour, I had many options here and should have taken my time in choosing the best mix of options. The one I chose could have been brilliant - but the downside if it wasn't was too great to take such an unnecessary risk.

Mayhemizer_slith -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (9/26/2017 10:59:52 AM)

German units advaced few hexes in the east.

No land combats.

Germany rebases two fighters few hexes east in USSR front.

Italy rebases fighter from Cadiz to France and NAV from Cadiz to La Spezia.

Germany uses Ju52 to reorganize INF and HQ to reorganize 2x INF, GAR and ARM in Lithuania.

The really great thing from the delayer's perspective is the +2 impulse advance. A pair of impulses just disappeared into the ether. The attacking side has the consolation that the next impulse's weather will almost certainly be good.

Unless, of course, the turn ends, and you get the nightmare scenario of J/A disappearing into a swamp of nines and tens.... [:)]

Land: USSR, China
Combined: USA, France, CW

No Port Strikes. No naval air.

US send two cruiser from Pearl Harbor sailing westwards into the storm. They enter The Marianas where the Japanese cruiser on station can try to intercept them. What order does the Japanese cruiser have? Will it try to intercept the US cruisers or continue their patrol pattern.

No thanks.

Orm -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (10/1/2017 8:09:43 AM)

The cruiser stay in The Marianas. Most of the US submarines sail for the Chinese sea but a few sail for the Timor Sea. Two US

carriers sail from South Africa to the Red Sea.

A TRS sail from India to the Red Sea where one INF is embarked.

CW send a combined fleet to the Bay of Biscay. It transports one MOT and one DIV.

France send their TRS to the Bay of Biscay loaded with one British MOT.

Five sea areas are up for combat. CW decline to search in the Mediterranean. US initiate combat in the China Sea, the Timor Sea and the Marianas. Not even close to any combat in any of the sea areas.

USSR rail one factory from Dnepropetrovsk to Karaganda and one GARR from Tehran to Bryansk. USA rail one MIL from the East Coast to the West Coast.

The Chinese Nationalists cautiously advance towards the coast. US forces in the Arctic advance one hex towards the Arctic Highway. CW forces liberate Tunis. Egyptian territorial's continue advancing west towards Homs. 3rd INF advance west in Spain through the mud.

Over to Warspite1 for the remainder of the impulse.

warspite1 -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (10/1/2017 9:16:40 AM)

May/Jun 1942
Impulse: 5 (Allied)

Land Movement (Cont)
Soviet Union

Far East
The change in the weather proves a mixed blessing for the Soviet forces. Whilst welcome in Europe, in Asia this development upsets Koniev's timetable.... and the general is all too aware that little things like the weather cannot be used as an excuse with Stalin. There will be only detail movement of a couple of units in the Far East this impulse, but this includes pushing the reinforced 3rd Siberian Rifle Corps further south along the western slopes of the Changbai Mountains.

European Theatre
Leningrad Front
In the north the 50th Rifle Army and the 4th Cavalry Division push south and north respectively in order to try and re-open the Moscow-Murmansk highway, but this will take time. 16th Rifle Army maintains its position, guarding the southern shores of Lake Ladoga against possible Finnish flanking manoeuvres, but 1st Mechanised Army are released and ordered west to help guard the area between Lake Peipus and the Baltic Coast.

Northwestern Front
With the German Army Group North largely organised once more, it is decided to pull back from the Dvina. Two options were open to Stavka, one of which was to pull back through Estonia. However this would leave the Western Front too badly denuded and so instead Zhukov's forces in Latvia are ordered east - some will continue to be part of the NorthWest Front, while others will be transferred to the Western Front. The exact make-up will be decided in due course once German intentions north of the Pripyat become more apparent.

Western Front
The defence of Minsk has been abandoned and a line Pskov-Vitebsk-Gomel will be sought instead.

Southwestern Front and Southern Front
As in the north the two Fronts the boundary lines south of the Pripyat become blurred as the Soviets struggle to manage ever greater space with ever fewer resources. Future defence of the Dneipr will depend on how many (if any) units are extracted from their current predicament west of that river.

Chinese Communists
With the Western Army largely out of supply and the Eastern Army disorganised Mao has little choice but to order his troops to maintain station.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (10/2/2017 7:25:21 PM)

M/J 42 Axis 7

No DoW etc.

Germany air, Italy combined, Japan land.

Italians fly NAVs from Gib and Italy to the 4 and 3 boxes respectively.

Italian sub to North Atlantic 1-box.

Three areas available for combat but Italy declines Italian Coast.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (10/2/2017 7:34:32 PM)

First up, North Atlantic.

No air to fly.

Searches: Axis 6, Allies 7. No combat.

West Med.

CA initiates the search. Axis don't add anything else.

Allies can fly Lancs to 2-box (3 on extended range). Harrow to 2-box. Hurricane XII from Malta to 1-box. Other fighters to 0-box. Any taking to the skies?

Orm -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (10/2/2017 7:47:35 PM)

No air to West Med.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (10/2/2017 8:49:21 PM)

Searches: Axis 8, Allies 1.

I presume Allies will only include the 1 -box. How do they wish to play this?

[image]local://upfiles/47730/97DC7DF4E99A411AB19660368C270153.jpg[/image]

Orm -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (10/2/2017 9:47:42 PM)

Assuming 10 surprise points. And that 6 points is enough to reduce the damage suffered to 2D and abort. And that Allies has one X to place on the Italians. Then they use the remaining points to put the X on the TRS.

If so then Allies takes the Ds on Shropshire and on Effingham. Aborts on damaged ships first, then on BB, and then on CW cruisers.

Edit: CW ships abort to Malta and US ships abort to Port Said. Allied forces abort the sea area after this combat round.

Edit 2: Scrap that. I am tired. Thought it was storm. Instead of using points to pick target, use those points to select naval sea combat instead.

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (10/4/2017 6:42:34 PM)

The sound of the patrolling Italian aircraft, although largely out of sight in all the mirk, lulls the Italian navy into a false sense of security. It comes as a shock when a mixed Allied task force suddenly emerges from the mists and opens fire. The Italians recover their composure and give a reasonable account of themselves but are unable to concentrate their fire enough to mortally wound any ships. Two RN CA's limp from the battle with their crews making ultimately successful attempts to keep them afloat long enough to return to Gib.

[image]local://upfiles/47730/C2AD4A6508F14D728B840615C28364C5.jpg[/image]

AllenK -> RE: 4 player E-mail: AAR (10/4/2017 6:53:48 PM)

The Italian cruiser Trieste bears the brunt of the Allied fire as it puts itself between the Allies and the vulnerable transports. The gallant action dooms the cruiser but allows the transports to escape relatively unscathed.

Do the Allies stay for another round?
