Jan 12, 1942 SUBS: More sub attacks and misses. Only DDs this day. DEI: Big sweeps at Singers. Three groups of Oscar Ia, Ic, and A6M2 fly over to empty skies. Luckily I'd stood down all fighters to escort! [:)] The P-38s were set to sweep a troop formation one hex out of Palembang and pick off about 4 Nates for no losses. Good day at the office. The strike planes from Singers did some minor work. Vincents and Banshees both go for BBs while the Beasts for some reason strike out to several escaping xAKs, planting a fish in one and two in another. Wish they'd gone for Ise, which was in range off of Mersing. The Banshees get 1 x 1000lb penetrating on Furutaka and 2 x 1000lb onto Haruna, but they of course bounce. Still, that helps, and serves notice that Singers has some teeth. I also love the fact that he now has to decide when to sweep, at what altitude, and when he can begin bombing. It's not going to be easy. If he chooses to go for bombardments the mines and guns could do some real damage. The Raleigh is hit by Vals and nearly sunk. It'll most likely not make it now. The two DDs will try to still break free, but now that they're known, it'l be hard to find a free path. One interesting thing is that escorts for two separate strikes come in as sweeps and are hit by flak! I haven't seen that before. Cool. PACIFIC: Interesting thins up North. The Japanese have only a few combat ships up here and two CVs lurking somewhere, out of sight. CHINA: The Japanese try again near Tsiaotso, and get nowhere. In x3 he will need a lot more to make a difference. Jan 13, 1942 SUBS: More misses, but the attacks are steady. That's what I want. O20 and Sculpin get shots off today. DEI: Kalidjati is bombarded. It's pretty much lights out once a Dutch field is hit in DBB as they have virtually no engineers. Batavia is still damaged from a hit about three weeks ago. Not many planes lost, but also not many fields that are now operational around Java. The good news is that a crack Oscar Ic group swept Singers and we had just put the CAP into a sweep defence setup. We lost 2 x P-40E for about 20 Oscar Ic !! [X(][&o] There aren't many of these or any Oscars around now, and they're a good deal better than the alternative, which is Nates. It'll be April before the Tojo comes to ruin the party, so this bodes well. Also that's a lot of pilots swimming in the Singapore harbour. This makes me wary though. He may be forced to be bold and try a bombardment. Lots of BBs around, and while the mines and CD guns are impressive, who knows if the guns will even fire back. I did change the commander to one with high land, inspiration and decent aggressiveness. Well see. I'm planning a break out and CAP trap for a few turns from now. Once a few more DDs are repaired I'll run to an unspecified port and put up CAP to see if he has Nettie traps waiting for my trapped cruisers. I also want to get the P-38s out for a while to use them over Balikpapan if possible. I think a few very damaged ships are there and a few good penetrating hits could take them out. Our damaged running DDs did not make it past the bombardment TFs. Jan 14-15, 1942 SUBS: The KXVI sinks PB Akitsui Maru in a TF near Miri. A few other interactions but nothing else major. DEI: Small battles continue, with a few hits against the CA/CL at Balikpapan, and a DD that looks in trouble there. CL Kiso doesn't look good either, but there are so many damaged ships in several locations that the bomb hits are scattered among them and no one ever gets into real trouble. To top it off the 4Es don't fly on the 15th. Grrrrr. Looks like some action around Ambon. No more action around Singers these turns but there are a lot of big ships gathering and the KB is moving this way. Jan 16, 1942 SUBS: On the 16th Nautilus finds the KB but is sighted before getting a shot off. Several more on the way and trailing. A ton of subs are heading for Singers since this seems to be a gathering point for the IJN right now. I want to make sure there is no breakout from Palembang and hit anything either guarding that base or moving to bombard Singers. DEI: Hawks do well sweeping the small CAP at Balikpapan, but the 4Es again do not fly. The weather is currently listed as clear. Hmmmm. At Singers the DDs are now fixed up and enough of the damaged cruisers are ready that it looks like a good time for a breakout. I'm now more wary than ever of the possibility of a combined strike via sea dn air at Singers, possibly massive sweeps and bombers to follow, so I'll risk sending the bombers to Java and Borneo and the fighters to an Tandjoengbalai. I'd really like to save these ships as they are now very experienced and will be invaluable later. If he does bombard and end up with some damaged ships though, they'd also be in range to swoop in and disrupt. The second goal is to see if Netties are on strike orders and hopefully set a nice CAP trap. Wow. I didn't expect this. I put John Shafroth in charge and he may have diverted from the intended plan! A bit of pluck and it may have payed off ... Hyuga takes 17 shell hits, mostly superstructure, but a few start fires and one gave a heavy casualties to fire control parties message. Then late in the battle, mostly fought from 5-6k yards, she gets a fish ni the gut! Yes! [&o] Houston took one big penetrating 36cm shell, but stayed in the fight and landed some blows. The Myoko seems to have bowed out after two early shots to fire control and the tower causing heavy casualties. After that the I-166 lands a shot on CL Perth fleeing the scene. She and the TF end up making it to the CAP cover, which is positive, so hopefully there is enough speed to make it around Sumatra tomorrow and join the rest for he waiting RN fleet out of Nettie range. After this two TFs get to Singers unharmed by the copious minefields and untouched by even a shot from the CD guns. The Houston and company then went entirely the wrong direction and ran into an AKE and PC escorting. Both were sunk. Not sure how they ended up here, but if this ship was needed at say Sinkep to replenish continuous bombardment runs, this may have been a good misdirection. It remains to be seen if they'll head back to Singers or be hung out to dry low on ammo though. There were numerous run-ins between IJN DD and TB around Sinkep and the plentiful Dutch and USN subs flooding the area. More will arrive tomorrow! [:)] It looks like the island has no mines as several subs traversed just fine, and that means I could also consider a bombardment to hit whatever CAP is here, followed by a 4E strike. Over in the So Pac area some vigilant coast watchers reported some important shipping in Kaveign harbour. The report mentioned CS Mizuho, and I had no recon on the base. I decided to go all-in with any available Cats, the only planes with the range to hit here, and hit they did! There was no sign of a CS here, but several decent ships including an AD, and AMC and a CM took penetrating shots with critical damage messages. [:)] Can Claudes can make it down here from Truk? I'll have to check ranges. I know that due to the violent nature of the beginning months there are few A6Ms to be found and I'm sure anything in this theatre would be obsolete Nates or Claudes. At Balikpapan I noticed some damaged ships moved out of port and sitting ni the hex. I sent in Banshees and Bolos mostly to see if they could get a strike, hopefully to make them go into evasive manoeuvres and increase damage accumulations. Bolos did get through to CA Suzuya. Finally, IJ forces shocked into Tarakan. They did not take the base with a 1:2 result after I'd flown in a purchased PI infantry battalion. I'll fly more in now that the base has held, probably from other Dutch bases, to try to hang on here. I'd like to keep this base supply fuel to subs and as a spot to keep search going to guide subs to TFs nearby, but it depends on what kind of supply is here. Still, it's frustrating not to be able to deliver the decisive blow to actually sink something. This was my last view of the mini-KB up in the North a few turns back. What you can't see is that about 18 hexes to the South Sara and Hornet stalk quietly. I had hoped too try to intercept the IJN CVs after their mission was accomplished with CAP reduced and/or strikes not set. It was a long shot. I didn't want to risk a direct confrontation 2 vs 2 at this stage with marginally trained pilots, only Wildcats and Buffs on CAP and escort, and in an area that favours the IJN for proximity to escape and shipyards. So we waited and moved stealthily to the West. My prediction was that these ships would move to the Tokyo area to refuel and head South to join up or support more work in the DEI, So Pac or other destinations. Instead of catching the CVs we stalked in close, had a thought about hitting some industry, and decided to be (slightly) prudent for once! [:D] After my early moves I'm betting he has a ton of Nates and Claudes around at least, flying CAP, and some Netties/TB to strike out. I had a good look around though, and would have most likely gone for Osaka or Koba had I decided to make a run in. Tokyo would be the obvious target, but the shipyards in those bases, and/or a manpower strike at Osaka, could have been a decent possibility. Unseen at 13 hexes from Tokyo I decided to see if the CVs might still be hiding to the East or Paramushiro, waiting for a challenge to the forces at Attu. The next turn, on the 18th, we were sighted (although just the ASW DDs showed a 2/2 DL) and I decided to make a dash North. This was to both get out in case CVs or surface forces moved toward our reported position and to get in position to intercept the shipping known to be up North. I just saw the replay and got the report. Interestingly, nothing seems to have happened up here last turn. Curious to see what search has possibly picked up and what might be in range tomorrow. I'll spend one day trying to hit stuff, then move back SE to meet the oilers and head home. I'm sure there are some subs around and it would be best to stay out of their way for now! Back down South subs run interference for the Cruisers, which I set to go back into the maelstrom at Singers. I didn't like the air support around Java right now, and thought I might catch some DD/TB hanging around. They're also set to bombard Sinkep to limit its use as an escort and CAP base. I'll move the P-40E, P-40B and the Buffs back into Singers, but I'll leave out the P-38E for now. Too precious in case another bombardment is coming. I may have some surprises for future incursions. [:)] Perth and the Achilles with their DDs will head out to the end of Sumatra and hopefully out of Nettie range. Even more subs will be coming into the area dn the few that were damaged last turn will try to quickly repair at Singers. The KB has disappeared into the South China Sea somewhere. The reduction in A6M2 numbers seems a premature assumption as at least four groups fly today from the Palembang area and one defends Balikpapan. Two sweep empty air at Batavia, which is nice. Glad I didn't opt to go that direction with the cruisers. The first strike at Singers today is Nells escorted by Oscars bombing the port from 14k. Bad timing, as the CAP of 55 P-40 and 9 Buffs got to them quickly and shot down 2/3 of the group. I watched the replay and the Oscars defended extremely well, hitting a lot of P-40s for damage, but not being able to knock them out.
