Eric, I'm a regular reader and infrequent commenter in your AAR, so just wanted to thank you for doing it. I'm enjoying it and look forward to your entries.

Thanks Dan, always good to hear you're enjoying it. A fun game so far. [:)]

You guys seem well matched: Both experienced players. Both good. Both even-tempered. That's a good mix.

SUBS: Still a swirl of subs around the KB. No more contacts though.

On the 30th the Dutch silent service has another success, hitting BB Kongo at Balikpapan with one fish. While this won't send the ship under, it leads to some interesting possibilities.

DEI: After the turn I notice that it seems all Japanese combat ships around Balikpapan are disbanded. Wow! The base is open, the 88 fighters listed there are vulnerable to bombardments. I'd already moved out from Soerabaja, and Force Z plus two CA TFs and one CL TF and the Dutch could be available. That's a lot, but he has a bunch of CAs here too.

I can't rely on getting to the base at night with everything at 9 hexes distant, so I'll send in Force Z plus one CA TF to Balikpapan for a day bombardment. The Dutch will try to gt there with the CLs at night to sweep and maybe get a first bombardment in. Another CA TF will will hit Samarinda in the day which also has some fights and bombers listed. If I can close both fields then the 4Es can really wipe up and also hit the 3-4 injured ships in Balikpapan port (the Kongo plus at least 2-3 CA).

This is getting exciting and tense! I'll post the USN CVs near Banjarmasin with some LR CAP there over the fleet. Until I know the base is hit, zeros damaged and demoralised, I'll keep the CV air and 4Es on a tight leash.

The IJN continues to hit Batavia with modest effect, but again loses a DD to a mine. The DD losses are getting more serious for Japan.

PACIFIC: Ocean and Nauru are taken. Some PBYs are lost there.

CHINA: The IJA strikes on the yellow road to Sian but get a 1:2 and lose 250 disabled. Nice. Now that I think these can hold I may send more to reinforce.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J) (5/1/2017 9:19:13 PM)

This is a great spot to slow one line of advance if these troops can hold another 10-12 turns. Getting a big stop with massive disablements for the IJA could bode well to hold here.

Here is a bigger pic of China. The Japanese haven't shown their hand yet. The Allies will have a few eyes too as Lysanders enter China. The AVG is just sitting and waiting.

I haven't mentioned the drama on Malaya. This 8th Indian Brigade has travelled nearly the length of the peninsula and has defied the odds by now making it to Singers. It'll join two others to make the 9th Indian division and give Singers a solid 1100-1200AV. Forts are 3.4 and rising currently. Only very sporadic bombing has hit the base so far.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J) (5/1/2017 9:53:35 PM)

A lot of clear territory here and lots of planes to hit. If I can close the fields those airframes will all just be sitting there waiting to be flamed by 4Es and they'll be no cover for all of those ships, including the several that have taken Dutch torps.

The Allies are going all-in. We'll be hung out with little ammo for the next day if we do hit the base, but a dust up without air cover should still allow for some success the following day, and I've got two new CA TFs arriving too. On top of that, the oil will be wide open!

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J) (5/2/2017 7:42:32 AM)

The Dutch head in first. Three Kageros hold off three CL and 5 DD and put two CL out for the rest of the fight, maybe for good considering tomorrow expected battles. A poor showing for the Dutch. At least two of the three Kageros are sunk or in bad shape.

Hello Brooklyns!!! The USN CLs come in to wipe the remaining DDs out of the way and clear the path for all the bombardments to come. They don't go down without a fight though, and somehow only two 12.7cm shots put DD Selfridge in serious trouble. [:(]

Dec 31, 1941

DEI: On the day the Japanese lose around 74 airframes on the ground. It may not seem like a big deal considering Japanese production capabilities in game, but they haven't yet ramped up and A6M2 pools are not huge to start. I think production numbers are around 56/month to start. So this could be almost a month's production with a bunch more on the ground to take as we want over the next few turns.

Balikpapan will not recover quickly. Not only did the base take a huge hit but ground troops were decimated by the big guns. Accumulated hits listed below:

Airbase hits 35
Runway hits 86
Port hits 1

Troops took a pounding and airframe servicing will not be functioning at a high level for weeks, I'd guess. Here are the totals destroyed with many more disabled over the three bombardments:

Squads: 4 destroyed
Non Combat: 57 destroyed
Engineers: 3 destroyed
Guns lost 38 destroyed

Samarinda suffered much more to it's port, and even had an oil hit (taking three points off) from bombardment by three USN CAs during the day. I think only his regiment is in base though so it may be out of commission even longer than Balikpapan, and those planes on the ground will be targeted heavily in coming turns:

Oil hits 1
Airbase hits 21
Runway hits 42
Port hits 14

Now will be the real test. Can the RN big boys escape the wrath of the IJN? Will the USN CAs make it out? How will the Brooklyns do against IJN CAs rushing from port?

Another bombardment at Batavia. He hit some industry this time again. This is good for the Allies as the more he wipes out there the less he'll be able to use when he gets the base.

SUBS: Dutch subs converge on Balikpapan are in anticipation of major action next turn.

PACIFIC: Still chasing the KB which is still near Rabaul.

CHINA: Japanese troops at Amkang managed to hold at a 1:1, but the Chinese will shock tomorrow.

The IJN has been losing a lot of DDs in the past turns. Some up North, some in the So Pac area, some to mines at Batavia, and now some of the best at Balikpapan. They likely took out at least one CL on their way, but this has to begin to hurt Japan, not just in the long term, but even as soon as next turn if the big boys don't have enough ASW cover.

obvert -> RE: Beans, Bullets and Black Oil :: obvert (A) vs Lowpe (J) (5/2/2017 1:47:45 PM)

The night started out with the Dutch again. This time a small somewhat seemingly evenly matched IJN TF hit the CL Tromp and two Dutch DDs. This was not even. Tromp was already hurt, and the IJN ships dominated the Dutch yet again.

The Haruna TF then found our big guns. The PoW and Repulse had very few rounds still between them of main gun ammo, so some of the CA were added to help get them through. I'm not sure it worked though, as PoW was a major target for Haruna and Furutaka. TheIJN DDs got plastered, but the big guns kept on churning. Lots of firepower. The many 5inch guns of the Allies with a few main battery additions couldn't match them in a long night battle.

I'm still not sure what to expect when I get the turn file! [&:]

After this another TF hit a smaller version with PoW detached. Repulse took the brunt this time. A torpedo slows her and the it's a pounding.

The fresh USN CAs then take front and center against another small two CA TF; IJN CAs are tough!!

Two USN CAs go down against one likely loss for the IJN.

The Samarinda bombardment TF make it out much more easily. They get by this CA TF with only a few shots hitting.

I wonder did you have your Surface TFs at flank speed? If not that might have allowed them to get in and far enough away that if he had put his at normal speed you might have gotten the relatively undamaged vessels out of his normal sailing range. If you had them at flank speed then never mind my comments.

To get the daylight bombardment the TFs had to rest at Balikpapan after the turn. To bombard in the day they have to be set to remain, so they were in the same hex to start the turn as the IJN.They were on flank the day before, so no, mission speed for this turn.

I'm amazed there weren't more battles with the main TF and that the Samarinda CAs got away completely.

I see Force Z as expendable, a really big useful pile of VPs of course, but expendable at this point if ti's for the right cause. This is the right cause.

For the next 5-7 turns, or until the KB can arrive at least, the USN and local LBA can rule Balikpapan and Samarinda. That means that if I can sink the 2-3 CAs and BB in port the Allies win this battle running away. If I only get a few of them it's still an Allied win if I can get the oil smashed and the rest of the A6M2s, Nells, Betties, Oscars, Babs and Nates at the two fields destroyed. That would be another 100+ VPs and ensure he'll be short on airframes for the next few months.

If the Japanese want a secondary stage of invasions it's in their interest to start those during the invasion bonus timeframe and to have solid air and naval assets ready to dominate the shorthanded Allies. If he's low on planes, has lost some CAs and maybe a BB, has others in the yards and has to use piles of supply to fix yet another damaged oilfield, it's not going to be easy to go for India, OZ or some other extended invasion opportunity.

The Salt Lake had to be detached, tried to make a run for it, but ended up in the jaws of yet another CA TF. I think this must be all of them accounted for and thus not one is left with a full magazine for tomorrow. Sucks to lose 3 CA outright, but some other good things are coming up here! [:)]

Vines from Manado found another big IJN TF on the way. Yamashiro was attacked but only dinged. Maybe they'll stray closer to the CVs tomorrow? [;)]

Daylight brings some relief to the beleaguered Allied naval units. The CVs begin to play a part, and likely finish off a CA TF.
