Airacobra's sweep the depleted Palembang fighter force, but get handled roughly.

So, a very good day in the air...

Lowpe -> RE: Soviets Activated.... (10/6/2017 10:36:22 PM)

So, there will be lots of carnage tomorrow....

Task Force Takao has 100% of torpedoes present, and 90% of ammunition and can easily reload at Palembang.

Task Force Mutsu has only 52% of torpedoes but 97% of ammunition having performed a tactical reload at Georgetown on way south. Unfortunately what is lacking is the big gun ammo on the battleships...they have some, but not what I would like. The battleships would have to swing to the east to fully reload.

The Kaga airgroup is a full speed run to where she could influence the fight, or she can transfer the planes to local fields, but coordination would suffer.

There are a few more destroyers at Kuching that could join the fireworks too.

The 4th Yokosuka is at Brunei loaded on fast transports...while the 11th Garrison is passing Formosa.

When the Allies last tried this tactic, I sacrificed the runway so to engage the Repulse and POW after bombarding. My surface ships did great there, and it led to the Allies sending in the fleet carriers to constricted waters in a vain attempt to rescue Repulse and turn the tide.

But I don't think that is a valid choice for today, as Palembang is very weakly held, and I need the runway operational...also, there may be a very good chance of hitting the cruiser force with a superior battleship force and then retiring to Singkawang for rearming...while the Tako and Abukuma tangle with the destroyers. Of course there is light cruisers, and perhaps Boise in those destroyers east of Palembang.

danger and opportunity loom here.

I wonder if this is fog of war, and in reality a Soviet DD was scuttled here?

It will be a near run thing, if I pull this off...both the escape from Kotou and the defense of the northern woods.

Burma Front...strange happenings here.

Magwe quiet again today, I fear all the 4Es have flown down to Singers.

Bless you Oscar. The Ic is super impressive against the Soviets, well except for the Mig.

Lowpe -> RE: Soviets Activated.... (10/7/2017 12:38:30 AM)

It has been an absolute bloodbath in the air...Japanese top fighter pilots are mostly Zero drivers, not surprising as they are more numerous than Oscar Ic pilots, and all the other planes carry 7.7 caliber machine guns.

Lowpe -> RE: Soviets Activated.... (10/7/2017 12:46:50 AM)

I have been struggling for a use for Claudes and Nates. Here I try a very low percentage very low on LRCAP ambush.

The idea is that the sacrificial Claude, pulls the Soviet fighters down even further, lowering the engagement or pulling the escorts out of position. There was a second fight, and in that clash 3 Nates showed up...a low percentage on LRCAP gives you sequential staying power.

Probably had no meaningful effect...but it is fun to try and speculate.[:)]

Weather and moonlight for the upcoming fireworks. They played a factor in my naval dispositions.

That's only the beginning. Well you know that.

Lowpe -> RE: Soviets Activated.... (10/7/2017 9:29:03 PM)

Don't feel real comfortable with this turn, I should have sent all surface ships to Sinkawang rather than split between there and Palembang.

Well, we shall see what happens.

Bif1961 -> RE: Soviets Activated.... (10/7/2017 11:21:36 PM)

How about night fighters they help distrupt night attacks by just being there making them less effective.

March 6, 1942

And the firefights begin...no damage to the Allies of merit, only 2 hits, while the Tenedos is left on fire and the Dorsetshire takes 2 good hits a 36 cm shell and and a 15cm shell, the other hit on her bounces. Exeter takes two hits, Bagley one hit.

Moonlight 89% and Overcast conditions...

Outnumbered, but plucky, the IJN destroyers fight a long engagement.

At Sabang a small IJN destroyer raids the port...to find a single xakl. Moments later, the Karukaya surprises another xakl and riddles her with 25mm fire and a few 12cm hits...leaving her on fire.

After the scouting planes report back, a fresh round of naval combat occurs. The Allied fleets proves adept at dodging torpedoes.

Lowpe -> RE: Soviets Activated.... (10/8/2017 12:16:46 AM)

And another fight....the Dragon's fires are out of control and the Chikuma won't rest till she is down.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/080E7A0759CF421298152F29EE4B3DDA.jpg[/image]

Immediately after, the Chikuma closes with the burning Vendetta and puts 3 more hits on her.

Lowpe -> RE: Soviets Activated.... (10/8/2017 12:21:04 AM)

Chikuma is getting a workout tonight!

Although events are going well now, I fear an all out Allied air attack on IJN shipping at Palembang come morning. That could be ugly.

No night time bombardment of Palembang, and the Akukuma sinks two destroyers. Scout is a good ship, and I am glad to see her gone.
