I might say that the Matilda II was heavily armored but sported a 2 lb main gun. When I think of "heavy tanks" I think bigger guns too -- 76mm and greater ..
Thus maybe the compromise of medium [8D]

Maybe, but i heard that KV-1 have around the same firepower as a T-34 (while being a pain to move.... [:D]
).

Dinglir -> RE: Some thoughts about the game (7/18/2017 7:50:09 PM)

Stelteck, a question: When looking at your logistics report - how many T-60's and T-70's do your divisions still want for?

Not much, less than 200, but these tanks are supposed to replace all others light tanks, so the logistic report do not show it, but i'am still upgrading each turn old tank to T-60 and at the same time some T-60 to T-70.

I'am trying to handle the commander report to show me how many light tanks i have with mitigated success.

In june 1942 I have something like deployed in my units :
1500 T-60.
700 T-70.
400 M3 Stuart.
But still :
400 BT-7.
250 T-26.

So i need 2000/2500 T-70.

In july 1942 i have a TOE "upgrade" that remove heavy tanks from my tanks units and add 50% more light and medium tanks.

STEF78 -> End of spring mud 1942 (7/19/2017 12:05:08 PM)

An overview of the front early May 1942.

My mobile units aren't well dispatched on the front line. I'm too strong near Moscow and the only other mobile force is in the donets bend.

It will change as soon as Moscow is taken.

STEF78 -> May 1942 (7/19/2017 7:26:19 PM)

Turn 47, 7th may 1942

Time for action!

Moscow
The ennemy capital has Fallen! Maybe I should have used less strength to take the city... but I really wanted it!

Center
Grinding is on.

South
Grinding on upper Donets where russians are weak and hammering east of Rostov where resistance is strong

And a view of air losses

And ground losses

STEF78 -> May 1942 (7/21/2017 8:05:34 PM)

Turn 48, 14th may 1942

Russian army is very strong from Rostov to Vorochilovgrad and my motorized spearheads have to retreat. Lot's of Cav corps are in this area.

Mud prevents more advance.

STEF78 -> May 1942 (7/23/2017 6:06:49 PM)

Turn 49, 21 may 1942

2nd week of clear weather.

I decide to threaten the russian bulge created west of Tula during the blizzard. I hit southeast of Tula with the equivalent of a full Pzk

In the South, interesting moves!
- Boguchar is taken
- the Don seems without any protection
- a pocket is created.

Very strong resistance east of Rostov.

Stelteck -> RE: May 1942 (7/23/2017 9:30:39 PM)

STEF78 -> May 1942 (7/25/2017 11:32:18 AM)

Turn 50, 28th may 1942

Mud, so less action. All the tactical bombings result from russian moves. Maybe Stavka is worried with this offensive... [:D]

In the South Stelteck managed to reopen the Pocket (I forgot tyo take the picture before my moves)... and I proved to be unable to reseal it.

STEF78 -> June 1942 (7/27/2017 8:48:27 PM)

Turn 51, 4th june 1942

Mud ...

Situation in the South before my moves

The Pocket won't be reopened and I have 2 Pzk with full MP's

In the center, we are waiting for dry weather

STEF78 -> June 1942 (7/31/2017 8:06:02 PM)

Turn 52, 11th june 1942

Clear weather, before my moves... Stelteck cautiously gives some ground near Tula

In the South, encircled russian units are abandoned to their fate. rifle brigades will act as rearguard.

And both OOB before the bloodbath

First, east of Moscow, the reds are sent back to their departure line.

And after my moves:
- in the center I decide to drive full east
- near Boguchar, the Don line is broken and a Pocket created. Never underestimate 2 Pzk with 50MP's! I mopped up some russian airfields. more than 900 airccrafts destroyed.
- I pocket the reargauard in the Don bend
- Near Rostov, I want to break the lower Don line, take Rostov and activate Army group A and B
- and the OOB after my moves. Heavy losses!

Stelteck -> RE: June 1942 (7/31/2017 9:31:38 PM)

A turn of very heavy fighting. Fortunately the weather forecast was mud.

I'am learning a lot with this game. I'am becoming especially very fond of rifles brigades. They are completely expandable (divisions are not).
They are also slipery and move more easily than divisions around ennemy zone of control.
They can stay in contact with ennemy.

BrianG -> RE: June 1942 (7/31/2017 9:52:21 PM)

nice mud set up.

Poor Russians need to run. And this is from the general who usually fights forward.

charlie0311 -> RE: June 1942 (7/31/2017 11:18:02 PM)

run and run, see Bon Jovi "Little Runaway" utube.

Most excellent rifle x's, build many more, let them train, they LOVE it. Soon enough (winter 43) they join their big brother rifle xx's to become that mightiest of the mighty. The all powerful gd rifle xxx. Stef will die in the Riechstagg (sp) yet again.

STEF78 -> June 1942 (8/1/2017 5:57:37 PM)

Turn 53, 18th june 1942

Mud! But forecast for next week is clear weather and... the russians seem worried about the crossing of the Don.

They decide to trade ground against time... but they have less ground to trade than last year

STEF78 -> June 1942 (8/1/2017 7:24:32 PM)

And a view of the evolution of the OOB and the losses

Both armies are ready for the summer campaign

Stelteck -> RE: June 1942 (8/2/2017 9:28:28 PM)

If everyone fight like my tank brigades, i have no fear.

[image]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/64073834/WITE%20Steph/Capture%20d%27%C3%A9cran%202017-07-21%2022.28.49.jpg[/image]

STEF78 -> June 1942 (8/3/2017 9:21:04 PM)

Turn 54, 25th june 1942

This turn is one of the most important of the game. It will have conséquences over at least the first part of the summer campaign... and I'm perfectly aware that time isn't on my side.

So let's have a look at the map before my moves. at the moment, I have several options open:
- creation of a buffer in front of Moscow
- hammer the Tambov/Penza line
- run to the Volga and Saratov
- all in to take Stalingrad
- why not trying Baku?
- isolation and capture of Crimea

I decide to fight for 2 goals:
- The Saratov/Stalingrad area. It will let me decide after if I move to the north or the South.
- Grozny and the caspian sea and maybe Baku... because of the weakness of the Manych area

and after my moves. the russian frontline is badly hurt and Stelteck will have to move out of the Don bend...

the OOB

Stelteck -> RE: June 1942 (8/4/2017 8:32:57 AM)

Very clear and easy to read AAR.

The southern front at STalingrad, the crimean front and the Transcaucasus front in the caucasus and the voronev front at saratov will soon have a lot of fun.

Zukov was appointed the new commander of the southern front by the way.

chaos45 -> RE: June 1942 (8/4/2017 12:57:43 PM)

going to be interesting as 3 separate spear points by the Germans....the Soviets should have the strength to defeat at least one in detail depending on where cav/tanks are concentrated. Seen alot of German players attempt these types of dispersed operations in 1942 and I think a big hit by all the armor in one place is usually the Best as it allows the German play to punish soviet counterattack forces with encirclement...with 3 punches will be very hard for the Germans to do this.

STEF78 -> RE: June 1942 (8/4/2017 7:22:42 PM)

panzerball or not panzerball....[&:]

I tried both ways in 1942 aand I found that spreading the Pzd is the best way to gain ground. And it creates more uncertainty for the russian player.

But your right, it generates less encirclements.

And concerning russian counterattacks, from my experience, they aren't an issue in summer 1942

STEF78 -> July 1942 (8/6/2017 9:00:09 PM)

Turn 55, 2nd july 1942

As scheduled, russian army is unable to hold the line South of the Oka.

Below, the map before my moves

Some rifle brigades act as rear guards. In the Manych area, Stelteck seeems to be still underestimating the mobility of german Pzk

[

So I do the left hook near Manych aand gather several Pzk east of Voronejh to reach the Volga.

A single Pzk will advance to Stalingrad from the South west

The losses

And the OOB

STEF78 -> July 1942 (8/7/2017 7:09:22 PM)

Turn 56, 9th july 1942

Hot summer, hot battles.

In the center, Stelteck did an interesting gambit to cut supply to my spearhead threatening the Volga. One week against one tank corps. a good deal from my point of view.

In the South, the HQBU done during the previous turn allowed me to take Vorochilovsk and cut the direct rail line between Krasnodar and baku. Fine

Stelteck -> RE: July 1942 (8/7/2017 8:02:20 PM)

The previous passive Stavka leader was sacked and a new energic and manly leader took command !!
It was quite funny.

[image]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/64073834/WITE%20Steph/Capture%20d%27%C3%A9cran%202017-07-25%2019.14.07.jpg[/image]

I had another picture of my offensive :
I disloged some italian divisions south and a moutain division north with 2 cavalries armies and 2 armored ones and sent an heroic tank corps and some brigades in the breach.

[image]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/64073834/WITE%20Steph/Capture%20d%27%C3%A9cran%202017-07-25%2022.46.59.jpg[/image]

In the south south , well done i was not really expecting the panzers to come that way.

Looks like i need all my railroad pool ASAP to transfert troops from West caucasus to East in emergency though the moutains ....
The trans caucasus front is at this time 100% on the wrong side of the panzer divisions.

STEF78 -> July 1942 (8/8/2017 7:29:12 PM)

Turn 57, 16th july 1942

Below, the map before my moves.

Most action will occur south of Tambov. Some ground given by the russians in the center but Stelteck seems to be determined to fight for Stalingrad.

In the South, he wants to use the direct road Krasnodar-Baku

In the center, direct push to the Volga. Some rifle brigades trapped. Our spearheads are 20 miles from the Volga and from Stalingrad.

In the South, we block the russian units moving the the east and run to Grozny. I want to keep my momentum.

And the OOB

timmyab -> RE: June 1942 (8/9/2017 11:19:34 AM)

panzerball or not panzerball....

A 100% panzerball is a scary thing in 1942 but personally I think that 2/3 + 1/3 is more difficult for the Soviet player to defend and more mentally taxing as well.
The 1/3 is about 11 or 12 mobile divisions which is big enough to make a major breakthrough so the Soviet player has to defend in depth everywhere not just where the 2/3 is committed. The 1/3 can pick it's place and time for an explosive breakthrough or reinforce the main offensive depending on circumstances. This second force also introduces the possibility of a massive, and possibly game ending, double envelopment.

Very interesting game as always Stef.
I love to see a Southern strategy even if the game doesn't simulate it terribly well in my opinion.

Personally I think Stelteck's tank corps sacrifice was well worth it. I'd happily sacrifice one per turn in Summer 42 to take a pz army out of the game. In Summer 42 I keep some at low TOE on the flanks of the pz armies for this purpose.

I think that supply shortage is well simulated.

On the other side, some of the Caucasus hexes should be impassable. It's not realistic to have mountains divisions advancing 20 miles per week with their material.

sillyflower -> RE: June 1942 (8/10/2017 12:48:32 PM)

I agree with Timmytab re the sacrifice.

Nice move on your part but you need to give priority to getting your rail line cleared and converted, and to cutting the line to Tuapse if you can.

You're right. I do my best to repair the rail line at high speed but Caucasus is so big... and I have only one rail line from Rostov to Makalachka...

Concerning the Touapse railline, I had not enough Mp's to cut it... I decided to drive as hard as possible to Baku

STEF78 -> July 1942 (8/11/2017 9:20:50 PM)

Turn 58, 23th July 1942

An overview of the southern part of the front.
We begin to clear the western bank of the Volga and press the salliant formed around Stalingrad.
In the Caucasus, Caspian sea is ten miles away.

Closer view on Stalingrad. The city has level 4 entrenchments.

In the South, moutains divs are arriving in order to cut the Baku-Batumi rail line. It will be difficult as russian troops in western Caucasus will escape... I cannot be strong everywhere!
