Geraldton

More Banshees arrive, they work very well on tanks, and not so great on infantry. Enjoying our bombing here, but we really lack good tactical bombers to really make the IJA pay.

This is the 2nd wave of American Reinforcements to Australia...the first wave was howitzers and the 34th Regiment and one AA unit...

With this AA arrival we will be able to cover most of the big VP farms, and we are growing our fighter air force with more on the way.

Dodging the KB...making them burn fuel at least, although in a scenario 2 game Japan does have the fuel to burn.

Is your sense they are still attacking and only pulling back battered units, or in general withdrawal?

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (12/13/2020 1:13:26 PM)

The barrier reefs around Babeldaob might simplify this planned interception.

Not really expecting too much from three old destroyers...but the psych impact is large.[:'(]

Will issue new routing for the destroyers now, but this was yesterdays routing, the local commander decided to sit of Babeldoab instead of racing in...his decision. To get them to race in I should have set remain on station target Babeldoab along with direct and absolute.

I have 8 rested B17Ds in Singapore...and I am trying to develop some recon (dl) for them...but failing so far.

Oh, to have Marblehead and 3 destroyers hiding in one of those dot bases near Soerabaja.[sm=sad-1361.gif]

Remain on Station can interfere with intercepts. Try Patrol instead.

My guess is he will return with some baby carriers and another division or three. Perhaps land south and look to capture Kalgoorlie eventually. I bet he wants to pocket the Australian divisions here very badly...low hanging fruit in his opinion.

ny59giants -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (12/13/2020 1:30:37 PM)

He will go after the large and hopefully unprotected resource centers in southern Australia for strategic VPs. Looking at your screenshot, it will be Broken Hill. This is from his perspective, of course.

Banshees - maybe not so many destroyed or damaged squads/AFVs, but the disruption level should make some of those LCUs combat ineffective, at least.

You misunderstand, last turn IF I wanted to force them to arrive in Babeldoab from so very far away, I could have use remain on station, direct, absolute to get them to do that...instead of what happened in actuality, the TF commander made a decision to pull up short...

For this intercept I will plot a patrol path between two points for an intercept. +1. Haven't done it yet.

I think I understood that. From some testing long ago (never contradicted in practice), Remain on Station (mostly?) stops that TF from initiating an intercept. Certainly interferes with any React range set. So if you want to set them at a place intending to intercept an enemy TF, Remain on Station is usually counterproductive.

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (12/13/2020 1:47:20 PM)

American forces are now showing up almost every day at Capetown, two Marine regiments have already left, along with a fighter and bomber squadron and a base force.

I actually moved Queen Elizabeth here to make these runs...probably a mistake as she can't fit in any port but Colombo. But she is making runs from Cape Town to Bombay for now (her first load is with an American base force). She has 93 days left in service so should be able to make a few more runs.

Here you can see the US Air Forces flowing into both Cape Town and Brisbane. There is another P40 Squadron showing up in Brisbane in 6 days too.

Ok, I really pretty much only have pbem experience shooting Allied bombers down. I did briefly use them in a Downfall test game with M-M a long time ago...

My ground pounders are going to be the twin engine bombers: 6 500# bombs, no great defensive guns yet but the best I have, good range.

British Bombers: Blenheims are being used at night only right now, and to transport supplies to China. Their defensive guns truly are pitiful.

Hudsons: Again very careful use, some naval search units too.

4E Beasties: I have been super careful with them so far...and will continue to follow that route. They are pretty much restricted to recon, supply transfer, and strategic or infrastructure bombing. I don't plan on using them versus troops. Call me a radical.[;)]

Second that. Tested it some time ago, now use patrol exclusively to get intercepts by SCTFs in the area around patrolled hex

I think recon missions can pick up docked TFs, and maybe have a chance to see TFs that are not docked but in the base hex.

Your instincts on use of Allied bombers are pretty good - as expected![:)]
The Blenheims can be useful bombing troops unprotected by CAP. Their 250 lb bombs have less effect, but they will gradually build up fatigue and disruption and make the enemy less effective and less mobile. IIRC they repair fairly quickly too.

The B-26s seem to be much less durable to flak than the B-25s. B-25Cs can fight off Oscars but Zeros always seem to do a lot of damage to them.

In a few more months you will get some Wellingtons that carry 8 x 500# bombs - same as a B-17! And they have long range too! Of course that means they are cream puffs in an air-to-air fight. Another aircraft to use carefully.

Liberators are much less durable against fighters than Fortresses, but their long range makes them valuable for deep raids to keep the enemy guessing and defending everywhere. I like hitting ships in port with them. [:)]

The early Havocs have little AA suppression (not enough forward firing guns) and need a lot of training in low level bombing. Short range is also an issue so I use them for ASW or Nav Search close to my ports while part of the squadron trains in low level bombing.

Alfred -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (12/13/2020 6:05:16 PM)

A TF ordered to "Remain on Station" but also given a Reaction range, may react to the enemy and intercept. The main reason why this setup should be sparingly used is that if a reaction does occur, it resets the remain on station flag and the TF will head back to its home port after the reaction. It will not return to where it had been ordered to remain.

A better approach is to give a single patrol boundary hex with a reaction range. Then if a reaction does occur, the TF returns to the single boundary patrol hex after the reaction. Of course provided that the conditions to terminate the patrol and return to the home port do not yet apply.

I have family here for Christmas and turns will slow down...oldest son brought their white German Shepherd puppy, only about 70 pounds but it is nice having a dog in the house again....

back to the war, trying to finish off the turn this morning...what is this IJA infantry spearhead up to?

Maybe the Japanese troops are singing:

"Over the river and through the woods . . . "

Alfred

I understand, but testing I did a long time ago (and published on the forum and wiki) shows reaction with Remain on Station was at least greatly curtailed.

Patrol is best. Even Retire allows what seemed to be free reactions on the way.

Well the movement indicator shows westward, so not over the river yet - more like "Climb Every Mountain".

Mountains ? Don’t exaggerate. « Over the hills and far away » would be better.

Well, I don't think that they would be singing:

"Over Hill,
Over Dale,
We will hit the dusty trail . . . "

for some strange reason . . . [X(]

But if they came from Ichang, they already crossed the river and are now going for the woods.

Some hill are/were mountains, they are just a little more mature . . . [;)]

Surely Yuki no Shingun would be a more likely choice?

Just remember sometimes if the top unit in the stack is going one way and the rest are going another, you don't see the other arrows. Not sure what causes this but I have seen it enough times to remember it.

Almost. There will be other pips showing the other movements, but they are quite small and easy to overlook. I suspect the game designers made it that way to allow this sort of deception.
