PzB74 -> RE: Shropshire buys 2 (3/14/2006 3:34:32 PM)

I still got quite a few good naval commanders in the pool WhoCares, but you're right - 2nd Lt. Izumida is overqualified
for command of a MLE. An asw group commander perhaps!?

huggarn -> RE: Shropshire buys 2 (3/14/2006 4:34:53 PM)

How big is the allied op losses?

There must quite a bunch of the 200+ AC taking off from the carries that never returns. Or?

Btw: thanks for a great AAR, you inspired me to do start playing Witp again.

PzB74 -> RE: Shropshire buys 2 (3/14/2006 5:14:07 PM)

Good to hear you're back at it Huggarn [8D] Wish I had the capacity to try a game with the latest patches and mods.

Allied op losses usually equalls Jap losses at around 4-14 ac pr day depending on the size of operations.
(My training missions in China are costly, especially when the units are green) US carrier based ac are high
quality and suffers only minor losses...unfortunately. It's the long range fighters and bombers that takes most
casualties.

I am not sure whether you can assign him as a dedicated ASW TF commander. The rank has no influence on the skills of a commander (read: a 80/81 2nd Lt is just as good as a Vice Admiral with the same ratings). However, the rank is the defining factor in which list a given commander appears. That's why you can't assign a 2nd Lt. as CV TF commander, nor a Vice Admiral as AK skipper.
That's why I said that I don't think that you can put him on a DD and I'd similarly doubt that you can pick him as a ASW TF commander. I am not even sure whether a skipper actually shows up in the TF commander list (except the skipper of the Flagship, of course)...

Remains also the question what the Leader-Bug will do with him in a turn or five [:'(]

PzB74 -> RE: Shropshire buys 2 (3/14/2006 6:24:34 PM)

True WhoCares - we've not been plagued much by the leader-bug in this game though [8D]
A 2nd lt should be a good commander for a PC/PG me thinks.

Seems like Andy is on the move: his carrier fleet is moving up the eastern coast of New Guinea.
Several targets were bombed, but I didn't spot any transports? Moving air reinforcements forward,
but I will not engage an enemy uber CAP unless I have to.

The question is: how should we react against an enemy incursion? Snipe and hide is my preferred
approach for the time being. It's not possible to prevent the fall of central NG, so why waste valuable
resources for very little gain? All my airfields are too far away to be a serious threat to enemy landings
in the area. Enemy LBA makes sure of that.

Got some really good units that will be put on naval night attack though and 3 subs have been ordered to intercept
the enemy carrier groupings. Just need a minor mircale [8|]

Blackadder : Tell me do you ever stop bullying and shouting at the lower orders?
Wellington : NEVER! There's only one way to win a campaign shout, shout and shout again.
Blackadder : You don't think that inspired leadership and tactical ability have anything to do with it?
Wellington : NO! It's all down to shouting. WAAGGHH!

Adapted it at school and it's working pretty well [:D]

Honda -> RE: Shropshire buys 2 (3/15/2006 1:04:19 AM)

One thing...if you have Bettys on Palau or anywhere within range 15 of the enemy fleet, put them ALL on night naval attack. That way your kamikaze subs will spot the enemy and apart from dying, possibly trigger night naval attacks. A good number of your Bettys should be high exp and you might find some success with those tactics. Don't send them during day, at least not in number. So better then to sleep, put them on alert, you might get lucky if you play it right.

PzB74 -> Dagua invaded! (3/15/2006 2:12:29 AM)

We're talking the same language Honda - today my Emily's took of and attacked the enemy carriers
in a night raid! 5 boats launched torpedoes, unfortunately no hits were scored. But we're absolutely
on the right track. Will place 150 highly experienced Bettys on night attack today.

A heavy enemy attack is bound to take Dagua and Aitape out in the long run - but we're inflicting casualties
and this is yet another back water base with only 350 mines.

PzB74 -> Aitape invaded! (3/15/2006 2:20:11 AM)

As the situation unfolds the might enemy armada runs into problems...it will soon become
dispersed and damaged ships will become vulnerable as they retreat.

The strain of keeping a large CAP over several bases + protecting the carriers AND launching
ground attacks will also inflict casualties and fatigue. Strong air units will be made available for strikes.

I'm moving the Combined Fleet back to Ulithi - some 800 ac can be brought into action but I'm more interested
in the surface combat opportunities. 10 battleships, a dozen cruisers and 30 destroyers can be made available.

Biak and Noemfoor are my primary airfields (size 4) within range of the enemy fleets.

What do you think gentlemen?

Aitape Invaded

pauk -> RE: Aitape invaded! (3/15/2006 7:16:28 AM)

IMO, if you going to face with the enemy you need combined strike: using SC and CVs. The main problem if you using only surface ships is that Andy can intercept you - he need to move his CV's northeast of invaded base (and by day phase your fleet is in range of his Avengers).

Ok, you can count on night surface interception on his CV but this is more than pure luck[:)].

Both solutions is too risky, so i would wait till Andy come to bases in northern Guinea (which you can't affort to loose just like that) - you will have support from several lvl 4 AFs...

I know that is very tempting to attack his transports but you are right... Andy plays right in your hands. After he capture these bases he will need a tons of supply to keep bases operational - and it is looong way from his supply sources....

It would be perfect that you delay him few more months (until Franks arrive) and then strike him at Northern Guinea....

BossGnome -> RE: Aitape invaded! (3/15/2006 7:41:28 AM)

yeah, I mean, is new guinea really that vital? Takig Aitape opens up the door to... nothing. You said it yourself, its only a lvl 1 airfield! Do NOT go through the big ocean space between palau and Aitape to strike at him. If you will strike, go from western new Guinea, and hug the coastline.

FeurerKrieg -> RE: Aitape invaded! (3/15/2006 8:17:04 AM)

I don't pipe up much, but I agree with Pauk and gnome, don't risk your vital assets in a place that doesn't take advantage of all those nice lvl 4 airfield closer to the PI and farther north NG.

For now stick with the massed night air attacks and suicide subs!

PzB74 -> RE: Aitape invaded! (3/16/2006 1:47:36 AM)

Thx for the input! I agree with your assessment... Loads of enemy troops came ashore at Dagua today.
I do have plans though: if the enemy fleet withdraws from central NG the bases will become extremely
vulnerable to bombardment attacks.

So this is what we'll do:

Dozens of cheap cargo ships and small minesweepers and barges will swarm towards Aitape and Dagua.
This will attract a lot of attention from the carriers and make them launch multiple strikes.
In the end they will have to withdraw to replenish. Then our battleships can move in and prepare the
way for naval bomber attacks.

IF we can isolate an enemy carrier TF the KB will stand by at Ulithi and be able to make a quick sprint
and wreck havoc.

It's all about waiting for the right moment and I think all opportunities should be studied closely and
preparations made just in case.

Fishbed -> RE: Aitape invaded! (3/16/2006 3:08:42 AM)

You have good chances of success PzB, but I fear Andy may find it a little... gamey, and he'll be right I guess, don't you think so? [&:]

If you really want to use these assets together with a real operation, why not using some transports for an attack behind enemy lines? I guess Andy has every single rifleman on the NG beaches right now - this may leave some bases with only a base force or so maybe... And with all naval assets commited to NG, this kind of actions will slow him down at lower cost...
A invasion TF may even force him to split his CV for rapid response or so... Not to mention if he risks himself to detach a surface action group from the air umbrella [:)]

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: Aitape invaded! (3/16/2006 3:54:03 AM)

I kind of agree with fishbed it is a little gamey .. BUT as he has been using PT's unrealistically .. well .. why cant you ?

CapAndGown -> RE: Aitape invaded! (3/16/2006 6:04:35 AM)

I don't think the problem is gamey-ness. The real problem is that it probably wont work. The AI is programed to concentrate on the highest value targets. Your surface group would be the focus of attack regardless of all these other targets.

Normally players complain when they can't tell their bombers to concentrate on transports. In this case I am sure that Andy would be happy that the game is coded the way it is. [:'(]

skrewball -> RE: Aitape invaded! (3/16/2006 8:21:02 AM)

You know...I am literally on the edge of my seat waiting to see how this ends.

Do you think its possible we can take up a collection from the forums, so Andy and PzB don't have to work anymore and can just play WiTP all day long? [:D]

WhoCares -> RE: Aitape invaded! (3/16/2006 10:35:01 AM)

Alternatively you might run an operation 'Running Sushi' - take Kitakami and/or Oi along with a small but torpedo-rich escort, like two or three Fubukis, and try to run them into the enemy bombardment fleet at night. Maybe only two ships, seeing that his bombardments only have 2xBB and DDs. Your ships would get matched up against the BBs and might hit with a few fishes [sm=00000622.gif]
For sure a Kamikaze mission, but when you manage to take some of his battlewagons out of the fight for a couple of month it might be worth it. You might assign the southernmost base on NG as their home base to get out of range of his CVs, but this would bring you closer to his LBA...

Of course, a lot also depends on the captains and the TF commander to go in and primarily use torpedos - if you only had a list of previous engagements with a good use of torpedos [8|]

PzB74 -> Dagua falls! (3/16/2006 7:47:02 PM)

I'm not worried about gameyness here: my barges are following an AP that provides fuel. All LST and other
smaller Allied landing crafts types are also following this procedure. A few days ago Andy sent his PT boats
from Mussaie Island and all the way to Truk. They had to hike back home.

Using old hulks to mislead enemy spotter planes is also a valid enough strategy - confusion to your enemies [;)]

Landing troops behind Andys lines is not an option Fishbed, LBA will crush both ships and troops before they can
achieve anything. I do have several cunning plans however. Almost diverted the KB south to intercept enemy ships
at Aitape today. Since all of Andys cv strike planes took off today they're all fatiged AND it's also possible that
they're all set to ground attack. Couldn't take the risk though - 400 Hellcats would have decimated our strike planes
if our carriers reacted towards the enemy birdfarms.

I'm more for a long lance attack ala WhoCares proposal: let's see how tings unfold.

Yes please Skrewball, 50k US$ and I'd become a full time addict [:D]

Dagua fell today, Aitape is next! I'm expecting major bombardment and air strikes over the next couple of days.
Let's see if we can give Andy a scare [8D]

If the game had allowed to specify targets for naval bombers things would have been soo different.
Since a carrier group with uber CAP is always the preferred target all Jap attack squadrons will
automatically committ suicide instead of sinking large numbers of enemy transports and warships - even
when unprotected.

I have to swallow hard every now and then to digest the dissappointment.... We just have to continue trying,

PzB74 -> Aitape falls! (3/17/2006 1:05:57 AM)

Andy said he was a little lucky yesterday...understatement if there ever was one [8|]

I stood down most of my bombers - sending most of the squadrons back to China to receive reinforcements.
The enemy carriers continue to launch vicious strikes - if I could afford to loose some carriers and ships
I would have risked a counter strike supported by massive amounts of naval bombers now. Unfortunately I
have to be patient. Andy is running into a lot of problems even against lightly defended targets. There will
be lots of opportunities.

As soon as the US carriers moves away we will attempt to disrupt the enemy buildup of Aitape and Dagua.

5 new army mixed brigades arrived today, I'm going to send em all to Northern New Guinea. Forts there are
growing strong.

Question: should I withdraw parts of the Hansa and Wewak garrisons or leave them there? Don't want these
large bases to fall into enemy hands.

timtom -> RE: Dagua falls! (3/17/2006 2:45:48 PM)

It's not for me to tell you how to play your game - that's between you and your opponent (-s[;)]). Still, I have to say I don't agree with your line of reasoning, but then again I'm a bit of a purist.

Gamey = exploiting flaws/loopholes in the programming to create unrealistic situations/outcomes.

quote:

ORIGINAL: PzB

I'm not worried about gameyness here: my barges are following an AP that provides fuel. All LST and other
smaller Allied landing crafts types are also following this procedure. A few days ago Andy sent his PT boats
from Mussaie Island and all the way to Truk. They had to hike back home.

Two wrongs doesn't make a right. Why not communicate your dissatisfaction to Andy (or blow the PT's out of the water with some strafing fighters)? Responding to gameyness with gameyness can only lead to more gameyness, I should think.

Using old hulks to mislead enemy spotter planes is also a valid enough strategy - confusion to your enemies.

That's not what you're doing. You're exploiting the fact that the targeting routine can't distinguish between KB and a lone AP. This tactic only makes sense if you're hoping to tricker a full strike from the CV's. In reality, your decoys would most likely either be ignored or have a flight send their way, not be subject to series of uber-strikes.

quote:

ORIGINAL: PzB

If the game had allowed to specify targets for naval bombers things would have been soo different.
Since a carrier group with uber CAP is always the preferred target all Jap attack squadrons will
automatically committ suicide instead of sinking large numbers of enemy transports and warships - even
when unprotected...I have to swallow hard every now and then to digest the dissappointment.

Yet later you lament the very same inflexible target routines that you're at the same time hoping to exploit. Seems to me that someone is trying to have his cake and eat it too.

Anyways, it's about having fun, and whatever works for you, works for you.

Regards,

Tom

PzB74 -> RE: Dagua falls! (3/17/2006 4:04:27 PM)

You're right TimTom - at times I wish the game would work better and feel a bit resigned when it doesn't.

At the same time me and Andy don't want to impose dozens of strict house rules regarding how to micro manage our
assets. I don't have to worry all too much about enemy subs because they're getting sapped by super asw ac and at the same
time Andy doesn't need more than 2 destroyers to escort hundreds of ships in his trans-pacific convoys because my subs refuse
to attack even unescorted troop ships.

As the Allied side gets more and more ships and ac the odds will stack up against Japan and since my bombers and later on - kamikazes -
will be next to useless against an enemy uber CAP I have to come up with new ideas. It's just as much a trial of will and a contest of
improvisation as anything else.

The plan to send out cargo ships to distract enemy attention was mostly a test: when the big invasion of the PI or Marianas/Palaus
takes place later on in 44 I will consider a more cunning approach. Tankers were often mistaken for carriers and so on. In 1944
Japan could ill afford to loose more of them. In this game the situation is quite different. If I can manage to hide my intentions
long enough it may be possible to delay the inevitable for just a little bit longer there will still be hope!

Japan actually sacrificed her carriers to lure the Americans away from Leyte in October 1944 - that's the kind of effect I will try to
achive by sending several cargo/tanker convoys into the battlefield. Barges and PT boats can only be attacked by fighters, going to keep
my barges in coastal waters. (Putting fighters at Rabaul is too risky - the place is bombed every now and then..and each time 90% of all ac
there are incinerated)

But rest assured, both me and Andy wish to keep thing as realistic as possible; but it is also ESSENTIAL to maintain a high degree of
playability as well. We play this game because it's fun - not because we feel obliged to. How many 1600 turns AAR games have you found
on the forums!? [;)]
