PzB74 -> RE: Enemy repulsed at Noemfoor! (6/12/2006 10:52:26 PM)

It depends...1-2 months to get an avg exp of 75. Another month to get it up to 80.
Here is the catch: Most units loose their less experienced pilots, so I send a Zeke Daitai back
to China with e.g. 10 pilots. All these are highly skilled, 80 exp ->

Even with 17 new rookie pilots the unit will start out with an avg skill of 50-55. It will only take
20-30 missions to get this up to 75 (including training fatalities which are usually quite high).

The new 75 exp unit will have 10 crack pilots and 17 pilots with exp in their 60's. I'm trying to get
most above 70. Have trained two 72 ac Zeke Daitais up to 80 exp though [:)]

Plan is to throw 150 George's, 150 Jacks', 200 Franks, 200 Tonys, 150 Tojos and 400 Zekes against
an Allied invasion of the Marianas in a few months [:D]

pauk -> RE: Enemy repulsed at Noemfoor! (6/12/2006 11:19:20 PM)

i would say - yes. Even full KB doesn't means nothing in 1944 due to notorious allied cap bonus. So loss of two or three CVE with small capacity (i guess you are referring to CVE's with 9 ac capacity) would not hurt you.

If you manage to hurt his offensive capacity and delay him for month or two i think it would worth it. But, all depends on actual situation on the frontlines.... i'm sure you will choose right solution[;)]

You are in position that your ground forces are your "Butai". Use them wisely (sp) and delay Andy. Delay him. Did I mention that you have to delay him?[;)]

I do not know what kind of forces you have in India but if you are short with them in the Pacific i would pull out all available units from India - defend only Karachi with couple of divisions (3-4?). I don't think that Andy will try invasion on India - but even if he do it this will give you another couple of months, at least.

PzB74 -> RE: Enemy repulsed at Noemfoor! (6/12/2006 11:52:59 PM)

True Pauk! Even a 20 ac cve isn't worth much, perhaps for a little commerce raiding if Andy doesn't pay
attention to his lines of communication. The KB will raise again to pose a threat if nothing else though. G
3-4 months and we should have 10 fleet carriers back in action.

I could disband India, but I've promised to play an honest game and will keep a strong garrison to keep
the locals at bay [;)] Moved one crack division to the front though.

Andy can squeeze his way into the cracks in my wall and slowly expand them, forcing me to fall back. But this
will take a long time...too long for him to reach Japan I hope!

Get my PM Pauk?

pauk -> RE: Enemy repulsed at Noemfoor! (6/13/2006 12:10:00 AM)

yes, got it.

the true is, he have a plenty of choices. He can attack SRA from Australia, he can go straight to HI (Wake, Marcus, Bonin). Don't forget that, and use it as your mantra, "i'm the better than it was historical Japan"[:)]

And deny him acces to SRA.

PzB74 -> RE: Enemy repulsed at Noemfoor! (6/13/2006 1:01:34 AM)

I worry more about the SRA than Wake/Marcus...he will HAVE to come through the Marianas/Palau eventually.
And then he will bleed - and that is my mantra [:D]

PzB74 -> RE: Enemy repulsed at Noemfoor! (6/13/2006 2:15:02 AM)

Another 21 Zeke's out of the pools....seems like we have to risk
a V1.8 upgrade, cause this isn't working.

2 escort carriers, a CS and escorts are now at Morotai and I've placed
600 fighters above the base. Can we force Andy's carriers to reach as they
move past Sarmi? He may try another raid!

He could go through the philippines tho, and then Formosa, And then southern Korea..

PzB74 -> RE: Enemy repulsed at Noemfoor! (6/13/2006 6:36:37 PM)

Yes he can String, but that would be a most troublesome route [;)]
Got heavy forts in every single base throughout the area and an enemy invasion will have to face
thousands of ac from the mutually supporting bases in the PI/DEI. Would slowly strangle Japan,
but not by the end of 1945.... Only by opening up the Central Pacific can Andy bring his might
to bear on the Home Islands by 1945.

That's my tip anyway with the PI/Formosa solution as a good second.
Anyway, we're prepared for both eventualities! Within 6 months dozens of new Army units will arrive
in the PI and man the forts there, so just let us delay the Allies for as long we can! [8D]

PzB74 -> RE: Enemy repulsed at Noemfoor! (6/13/2006 9:50:00 PM)

We're upgrading to V1.81 since the Zeke bug is threatening to terminate the game....

PzB74 -> Enemy invades Kai Island - again! (6/13/2006 10:53:09 PM)

Seems like I'm receiving Zekes again, 13 in the pool today and only 2 replacement
ac handed out. Could save the game! [8D] I did not update the game with the V1.6 database
changes. Got bad experiences....

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/28/44

Combat reports are still not functioning after we upgraded to V1.801.
Enemy invaded Kai Island, 4000 men ashore. 30 Oscars and 10 Judys lost to Lightnings on
LR-CAP, but the dive bombers hit 4 transports, damaging one heavily.

A mighty Allied Fleet is moving towards Noemfoor while launching strikes.
We're gathering strength at Manokwari awaiting Andy's move. 700 fighters have been moved in
and the escort carriers + some tankers have been assembled together with a surface combat fleet.

If Andy doesn't reinforce Noemfoor my bet is Sansapor!
Been reinforcing it heavily lately - up to 620 assault points and 6 forts.

PzB74 -> Enemy convoy struck of Kai Island! (6/14/2006 12:51:03 AM)

We got combat animations and text back! Only had 3 Zekes in my pool, so
still worried here....

Andy's mega fleet is now one hex east of Noemfoor. Tomorrow he may land there or
continue north. In the meanwhile we interdict an unprotected invasion convoy of Kai Island [:)]

PzB74 -> Enemy fleet moves to Northern New Guinea (6/14/2006 8:12:33 PM)

Managed to delete my screenie today [8|]
The enemy mega fleet is moving PAST Noemfoor and Manokwari.
Seems like my tip on Sansapor may hold water.

I'm gambling a bit: Andy spotted the Musashi at Menando - in fact
most of the Combined Fleets battle fleet is gathered here as well
as a 2 CVE TF and a tanker TF.

I want the enemy carriers to react towards Menando and face the
mega strong CAP I've placed her including 24 crack George fighters.
If we can cut down 2-300 enemy fighters the enemy fleet will become
vulnerable to powerful counters.

The battleships are quite sturdy, and I'm willing to risk some damage
in order to clip Andy's wings! [:)]

Fishbed -> RE: Enemy fleet moves to Northern New Guinea (6/15/2006 4:28:44 AM)

That's a risky gamble PzB... What is your assessment of his possible strike forces? Is there anything that can actually get sunk in Morotai? Did you withdraw sensible units like the destroyers or the cruisers before he hits you hard...?

PzB74 -> Enemy fleet reacts - 2 cve's sunk! (6/15/2006 9:46:14 PM)

You are right Fish, I took a risk - but a deliberate one. It came close to
succeeding, but again events out of my controll caused the loss of the 2 cve's
involved!

As planned the enemy carriers reacted towards our cve's at Morotai! I had 500 fighters
on CAP and wanted a heavy strike to hit them there. If the enemy got within 3 hexes
with one of more TF's 200 fighters and 200 bombers were ready to strike back.

I put the most cautious commander I got (aggression 36) in command of the escort carrier
TF and ordered it not to react. Unfortunately it did, something which is completely laughable.
given the present situation. The carriers got mauled and the BB Ise damaged. Can live with these
losses though. Another strike against a lone transport cost the Allies 36 fighters, in all 44
were shot down today.

My plan for the next days is outlined above the situation map at the end of this report.

Situation Map: Enemy moves towards Northern New Guinea!?

I withdraw most of my fleet, leave a covering TF at Morotai together with the wounded
BB. Another escort carrier will move in from Davao - land masse will make it impossible
for it to react to severly this time [8|] More fighters and bombers have been ordered to
stand by at Morotai and Davao. There are so many Jap ac available that I can afford to
send at least a thousand of them. Runways is the problem....

I expect Sansapor to be hit, even though Andy hasn't bombed it...which is a bit discomforting.
If he decides to leap even further north the opportunities to hurt him will become much better [:D]
Next turns will be exciting!

This time the enemy will not get away as easily as last time [;)]

PzB74 -> RE: Enemy fleet reacts - 2 cve's sunk! (6/16/2006 1:21:54 AM)

An update of the industry by early April 1944!

I must admit that reserves of ac engines and different other stocks are a bit low.
I'm constantly enlarging factories, so it's a rats race really!-)

Will turn of remaining armaments factories and in a few months all of my cv/cvl/cves will have
arrived. That should take some of the pressure of the naval yards.

Still need more Zekes, Tonys, Jacks and Topsys. Producing more than 80 pr month of the latter and
is expanding towards 600 A6M5. Only 13 days until the first 36 ac Frank unit arrives, production is
slated for 07/44 but I think it may get accelerated another 1-2 months. Got 366 ac researched pr month.
By now there are 3 units equipped with a total of 108 ac, all with exp between 75 and 80.

The last 48 ac Zeke group that arrived upgraded to the Jack, a nice trade! Training lots of this capable
interceptor by now. All these top of the line ac will be kept in reserve until 'Der Tag' [;)]

Two new Army HQs have been assigned to Yap and Bonin Jima. Considering sending new Brigades to India and
release a couple of crack divisions there. Will probably do it asap! Another crack Bde from China will be
released in a month or so. May put it on Formosa to beef up defenses there.

The DEI and Java is well defended, so is Northern New Guinea, the Southern PI, Palaus and Marianas.
It is not possible for the Allies to force their way to the more lightly defended rear areas before one
of these bullwarks have been cracked open.

Some of you may find my defense a bit reckless, but as Pauk puts it...I have to delay the enemy now.
The enemy will only become more numerous and better. In 4 months I hope to have a sub force of 30 boats
ready to intercept a major invasion - cripples and retreating ships will be targetted at the end of the battle.

PzB74 -> RE: Enemy fleet reacts - 2 cve's sunk! (6/16/2006 9:34:34 PM)

Andy thinks I'm up to something fishy...he has gathered his fleet of Sansapor.
Not a single bomardment attack, air or sea. So I think he's after another target.
I like this - sense opportunities for great mayhem and destruction [;)]

Turned of most of my remaining armamanets factories today. Within 12 days 8 new
army division appear in the Home Islands. The period of relative vulnerability is
therefore coming to an end. There are still several cities bases almost without protection.

RAM -> RE: Enemy fleet reacts - 2 cve's sunk! (6/16/2006 10:36:07 PM)

Hi PzB... just wanted to drop a note so you know I'm still reading this AAR (I posted a couple times on the good old times of early 1942, you might remember me or not, who knows :D).

I don't really have to give you any advice, you seem to be doing really good on your own (a shame the KB was so badly mauled in that battle north from NG. It was a quite crappy result for such a well trained force, IMO)...so I just wanted to say "thank you" for such a magnific AAR :).

PzB74 -> RE: Enemy fleet reacts - 2 cve's sunk! (6/16/2006 10:53:36 PM)

Hi RAM, certainly - remember your inputs!
Appreciated as alway! [:)]

Not doing swell right now, 44 is kinda sluggish for Japan if you know what I mean [;)]
Here is my vision:

1. Allies invade a base that's pretty close to one of my strong hold.
2. Allies send surface combat, bombardment and invasion force TF's into target base.
3. The powerful carrier TF's provides support nearby.
4. The Almighty Combined Fleet sends the bulk of its surface fleet against the Allied carriers [&o]
5. A powerful air strike cause massive damage on enemy carriers and surface groups.

It is very difficult for Andy to be strong everywhere, still pretty low on surface combat units me thinks.
All that is needed is one moment of great timing and magic.

Hope to show you how the Yamato and Musashi torch up a couple of Essex's soon [8D]

PzB74 -> Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 12:59:19 AM)

Andy sent his fleet in to 'squash' my over-concentration at Morotai as he called it [;)]
First 300 heavies smashed the place but the bulk of the fighters had already taken of for an all out
anti shipping strike!

Here is the taster I sent to Andy, planning to watch it...will take an hour plus [:D]
No matter how it ends Andy's carrier fleet will be missing lots of Hellcats and I hope to force him to RTB
and cause him further delay. Japan got more planes to throw in if necessary.

BANZAI!!

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 1:35:35 AM)

Well, it all ended a bit predictable...
First things firts:

Andy didn't send his fleet to Morotia, which is good - he still thought I
had the Combined Fleet there. He put ALL his carrier fighters on CAP and sent
a couple hundred heavies escorted by 250 P38Js in first. The heavies messed up
the place, but most of my fighters and bombers had already taken of to hit the
enemy fleets - which was a good thing cause they escaped destruction on the ground.

This didn't last long though: 384 Wildcats, 100 Wildcats and 12 Corsairs were enough
to shoot down 400 fighters and 80 bombers. Heck, the Wildcats did hardly see any
action. Some 130 Hellcats were shot down: not unreasonable really.

It is a bit unreasonable that 400 fighters can't get a single bomber through though.
This illustrates how impossible it will to make use of Kamikaze attacks later in the war.
Their ability to sneak through openings in the CAP screen and under low clouds will be
completely neutralized by the Uber CAP.

Must say I'm not sure how it will be possible to even get to the enemy.
Well, we have to struggle on even though I would definetly throw in the towel if this
was real life [;)]

Andy will most likely continue on to his invasion target: I will regroup my forces.
No lack of ac, just an utter lack of opportunities to get them to their targets.
Guess I will have to wait until one of my major strong holds comes under attack and throw
in the kitchen sink then.

Comments/advice on how to counter the Uber CAP?

String -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 1:42:11 AM)

I'd suggest trying to sneak in small 3-4 plane attacks. I've seen it work in some AAR's. More often than not they'll get shot down, but sometimes they'll get through and score a hit or two.

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 1:46:00 AM)

I've tried that dozens of times String, and all attacking ac have always been shot down.
A CAP of 250+ fighters is impenetrable by anything less than 1000+ ac strikes I'm afraid.
Had a cve in Morotai this time, had hoped to make the enemy cv's react again...but unfortunately no!

BLurking -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 2:01:04 AM)

I'm in April '44 in one of my PBEM, and the answer I've found is:
There is no way.
You can't break through the CAP in a stock game.
With v1.8 your subs can be effective, however.
Pop a fish into a carrier, and if the aircraft rebase to an undamaged CV - the CAP disappears due to overstacking.

That's the only way I've seen to get a strike in. Otherwise, I avoid his carrier concentrations.

Sorry, but I've run out of ideas, and I'm sitting at the same stage of the game as you are.

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 2:22:59 AM)

Yes, I'm having a slight hope that the new RO sub programme will provide me with a dagger!
I have to get Andy to knock his teeth out on my own CAP before launching a super heavy strike.
This will be the challenge.....

IF I sound a bit frustrated, it's mostly because of all the time and effort it takes to train 600 ac and
then have them all shot down in one air battle [8|] Can imagine myself plucking bits and pieces out of the furnace,
rebuilding them and sending them to China for 2 months and then back again! [:'(]

Less bloody air battles and the ability to sneak through a CAP with bombers is what Nick's mod provides me thinks.
If I only could see one or two US carriers burning it would have been worth it all!!

06 Maestro -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 6:31:50 AM)

Have you had any luck in developement of the Reppu or A-8?  I have gotten the impression that R&D does not do much to advance a production date, but was wondering about yjr resuts of long term efforts.

Fishbed -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 7:30:29 AM)

Yep... Game killers and game killers all the time, for everyone... And this terrible CAP thing with no leaks... Hail to the Nick! [&o]
But after all the suffering of the Allied side, well you'll have hard time ask Mac to consider not having ubercap. He's having his own problems to deal with, Im not sure if he's particularly happy with the pace of things right now...

Well but still two hopes: the carrier groups that get split, and the coming of new planes. I don't know how the Reppu will make it, but I witnessed the Shiden in another thread, man that's a bad boy.

About Kai Island, no plans for a come back?

pauk -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 11:39:04 AM)

this battle shows the only real "value" of the KB in 1944 - Andy wouldn't put 100 CAP if you didn't lost a CV battle earlier. What a value[8|]!

Ok, let's see what we can do. I'm afraid not a much, but at least enemy lost 25% fighters. Perhaps this will slow him down for coule of days...

1. On what attitude your bombers were set? You could try set majority of bombers on high attitude (20K+) and your fighters will keep attitude advantage against enemy. I'm afraid that this wouldn't help since Allies get CAP bonus but few more enemy planes would be shot down.....

2. It's clear that you can't penetrate through his CAP so only possibility is keep them on defence (CAP). Your fighters will not have "escort penalty" (fighters perform worse when they escorting then they are on CAP or sweep) and wait for the moment and the place where you can relase your war dogs in big numbers (1000+ ac) - that would be Philippines....

3. I'm suprised with your oil status - 1.2 million seems too low for me. You have less than 15K HI and more than 2 800 oil points - that is enough for 16 800 HI so you should have at least 2 million oil in stocks????

4. Now i understand why you had such a great time in Poland[;)], i must admit that you are really deserved nickname Felix[;)]

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 12:47:31 PM)

Not expecting any mercy from Andy, he plays well - no question about that!
Just have to drag his soft belly out from beneath his uber CAP Fish [;)]

The Reppu is so far away that I haven't started R&R yet. E.g the Frank was due
8/44. Put 350 ac on research and by 4/44 it's been accelerated to 7/44. Arrival
is accelerated once pr month with a max of 3-4 months. This usually takes place in
the 3-4 months before the is scheduled to arrive - this is my experience anyway.

Reppu and Shinden will arrive too late, will have to put our fait in a large number
of Jacks, Franks and Georges mixed up with Zekes and Oscars in the decoy role.

Think it's doable, Andy will have to move out of range from his LBA one day - and THEN
my friend [sm=00000959.gif]

No, Kai Island is out - too dangerous and 1.) I can't risk it without powerful KB 2.)
against powerful enemy LBA inc. massive P38 CAP 3. Enemy surface/carrier fleet too close.
So it's a lost cause and will be built to size 5 within 1-2 months.

True, I would need the KB around Pauk, but since it's 'grounded' I got a large amount of
Zekes and Jills/Judys available for pest controll [;)]

Since my bombers are mostly torpedo bombers, they come in at 7k feet. Can tuck in som Sallys
at 30k....

Yes, Andy has to hit my LBA CAP first, and then punished by uber strong strike! If he comes
to a.) PI or b.) Marianas - this should be possible. The good thing is that the big losses
recently hasn't cost me more than the 2 cve's - and as you said - that wouldn't hurt me.
But this was probably the last time I could throw a sizeable force at the enemy before I have
to stock up for the big inevitable mid 44 push against PI or Marianas!

Not really a quartermaster, been moving lots and lots of crude to the Home Island but my ships
have been burning a lot as well. Any advice on how I could increase HI output?

[;)] Yes, I'm a lucky sonofa Pauk!
Need a haircut, then I'll be back and see what Andy's up to...

castor troy -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 1:30:50 PM)

yes Nik´s mod is different. I just had an Allied attack with 35 F4F and 24 SBDs on my carriers with 130 A6M2 on CAP. Result 11 SBDs came through to bomb me... In your case this would perhaps mean that a couple of CVs would be out of order or a reef now.

Przemcio231 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 1:50:27 PM)

Troy that's how it was the Jap CAP was not That Effective...  look at my CV's vs LBA battle with the Game with Willie using NIK mode... i Was able to buther first wave of Val's , Jack's but the secound wave of Jacks's Betty's and some Val's put 2 torpedos in each of 2 CVL's and one in CLAA Reno... PZb try 2 smaller strikes and with luck even in stock something might get through...
