Not really a quartermaster, been moving lots and lots of crude to the Home Island but my ships
have been burning a lot as well. Any advice on how I could increase HI output?

hmm... not sure what went wrong with your crude oil.... in my current PBEM game i have more than 2.800 oil and my stockpiles are around 1.9 million of crude oil. (my HI is about 14 300).

I don't recall that many of your tankers went down due enemy sub actions but i could be wrong.

Regarding HI output i dont think there is magic formula on that. I'm sending conwoys to HI to 3 major ports (Hiroshima, Osaka and Tokyo) - it is better to have stockpiled resources on three places than one. But even if there is enough materials for HI this is not a guarantee for runing HI (me thinks) at full capacity.

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 5:16:14 PM)

Gentlemen, I need your help to finish a cunning plan to destroy the enemy fleet [;)]
New development indicates an enemy landing at Morotai or Wasile! The enemy fleet has moved
closer and while the heavies hit both Morotai and Wasile, a huge carrier strike force hit
Wasile which is a size 1(3) base with 264 assault points and 5 forts. An obvious target just
like Kai Island. Morotai is a super fortress...

So I've ordered transport ac to fly in reinforcements to Wasile and stacked Menando with Zekes,
Jills and Judy while Davao got all my long range A6M2s, Oscar IIs, Army and Navy bombers.

The fleet got all its 9 operational battleships in 4 powerful surface groups here as well as 2
CVE CV decoy TFs.

If Andy lands at Wasile - or Morotai - great opportunities will present themselves! Already short of
150 fighters + 50 damaged, he may become vulnerable.

See map at the end of report for complete update!
The crack 55th Div has been teleported from Palau to Jaluit again after we upgraded [:@]
This has opened up my cemented defense line, aargghhh.....

Situation Map: Enemy closes in on Weda!

It looks like the enemy will land on Weda - most likely on lightly defended Wasile.
We can only hope Andy has underestimaed our strength at Morotai, but this isn't likely.

We can heavily LR CAP Wasile/Morotai and further reduce enemy carrier fighter strength.
Powerful air strikes can be launched only against Wasile/Morotai as enemy cv's will most likely
stay 1 hex further away.

A Combined Fleet surface fleet supported by 2 CVE Carrier Decoy fleets can force an enemy reaction,
split his CAP. Again, losses can become heavy so we MUST plan and execute this well this time! [&o]

pauk -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 5:33:29 PM)

hmph, lots of possibilities... and lots of risk...

where is your surface fleet? i guess enemy can apporach to Wasile only from south? in that case you may find his invasion fleet at Wasile port during night phase (if your sc tf can arrive next turn).

I do not know if Wasile have big strategic value. Even if he capture base he must spend some time to expand AF and port. This base will be isolated and i don't see how he could keep Wasile supplied - hm, it seems to me that this attack is decoy...

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 5:36:25 PM)

True Pauk, we are still awaiting enemy moves....just making plans and moving hardware in case
Andy is serious! Will not committ unless an amph invasion IS mounted.

Fishbed -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 7:51:16 PM)

PzB

Honestly, I wonder if you should go on with focusing on the carriers man.
Let's face it: only a squattered carrier force may allow your airmen to strike deadly. If there's nothing to do with them and the Uber CAP, well let's destroy something else. His carriers can't cover both themselves and a landing zone without exposing themselves to a surface strike, staying static - so let's strike him everywhere his carriers are not covering, or you'll do nothing but giving him cheap air points and long-trained pilots to chew!

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 9:06:41 PM)

You are right Fish, and I have already issued a cunning plan to achieve just that! [;)]
Will provide an update shortly - look at this in the meanwhile:

The sub survived, and I now think my subs got a small but fair chance and is rushing more boats
into the area. Bring on the RO program! [:)]

Operation 'Lure & Destroy'

Forecast for tomrrow: Clear with Allied invasion of Wasile on Weda.
Plan: Lure the enemy carriers away from the invasion fleet and hit it hard!

Two escort carriers will again be used to get to the vulnerable enemy surface groups and troop ships.

The first will go to Menando, only 3 hexes from Wasile. This should trigger the US carriers.
There are 400 fighters on Menando, set on low CAP and escort missions.

The second will sail east of Morotai - perhaps we even can split up the enemy carriers!
As far as I know Andy doesn't have his strike ac set to naval attack - they refused to attack my
transports yesterday. Guess he's afraid of being 'tricked' into attacking a heavily CAP'ed Tf.

At Davao there are 400 bombers and 200 long range fighters - hopefully these will be joined by
as many of the fighters on Menando as possible. All bombers on Davao got a set range of 8 hexes.
Exactly the distance to Wasile and no longer. So even if the enemy carriers doesn't react, we should
not risk hitting the uber CAP. Last turn Andy used his Wildcats for LRCAP over Wasile. We can handle
them.

So dear Andy, send your battleships and loaded ducklings into Wasile and let the sun shine on the Empire
once again! [:D]

Next turn is in....

May the brave samurais take some ships with them as they commit the utmost sacrifice for the emperor...

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 10:33:53 PM)

Good work Pauk [:D]

Just looked at the turn and decided that I had to eat a pizza and watch football afterwards [;)]
Andy took his carriers AND invasion fleet into Wasile. Well, good I though - only half the usual uber CAP.
All we needed was a coordinated strike with (US-Italy 1-1) 6-800 ac!

What happens? All my Zekes at Menando decide to stay home.
Most of my ac at Davao decide to take of in dribs and drabs. Slaughtered to the last milk cow...some 400 ac splahsed.
Mostly Oscars, Sallys, Bettys, some A6M2s, transports etc.

My escort carriers were spotted - no reaction from the enemy!

Guess this is a penalty for overstacking, but it is as I told Andy - a wet dream to get coordinated strikes these days.
Both my bases had 250+ AS and an Air HQ. Morotai managed to launch a biggie, guess it should have been the other way around.

Not sure what to do next - have to think about it. Advice?
Mostly inclined to stand down and go home and wait until Andy invades a place that is protected by more surrounding bases.
One good news: me thinks Andy landed the bulk of his troops on a coastal hex BEFORE Wasile [:D] This may cost him much
frustration and time.

The sub that stalked the Franklin also mined an enemy destroyer. That captain is my only light these days! Except for the
uncoordinators in the US Navy that is [;)]

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 11:30:00 PM)

Told Andy that half his army landed in the swamps and he errrred a bit and wondered whether
it was caused by game mechanics. So I sent him the turn to check it out.

Said I'd be pleased to replay the turn and get my 500 ac back [;)]

This is what he landed in one turn: Woefully little actually....

Ground combat at Wasile

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 12238 troops, 167 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 309

Defending force 6838 troops, 45 guns, 56 vehicles, Assault Value = 73

Nemo121 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/17/2006 11:39:03 PM)

Night-time surface strikes into the invasion transports/ covering TFs seems to be something which could give excellent returns.

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/18/2006 2:55:57 AM)

Yes Nemo, very tempting...but Andy got 500 bombers on his birdfarms and if I stage too close or he moves
towards my fleet - it's gone!

It seems like Andy unloaded the bulk of his assault force in the beach hex before Wasile. He said it looks like a
mishap and not a game mechanics fault. We will continue the show.

Andy is going to have to move his 30k troops from the beach and to Wasile under cover of his carriers.
I'm not sure how to respond. The 800 remaining attack ac and fighters in the area are valuable to me, and I don't want
to risk them unless I think something can be achieved.

6 subs are enroute to the area with torps and mines. The ac ashore will rest and await an opportunity while reserves are
moved in from China and the Home Islands. The Navy will stand-by and be prepared to sortie, got 20 destroyers and 3 cruisers
in Tokyo, will consider to send them as well.

A special convoy will be sent to Jaluit to pick up the 55th Div that was teleported there. Will only pick up 90% of it
and hope it doesn't go back when unloaded. Fought this nasty bug before with little luck.

erstad -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/18/2006 6:26:55 AM)

Posted details in Andy's thread, but there is (or at least was) a bug where if a transport TF has as a destination a dot base, it will unload during the night phase even if "do not unload" is set.

Ran into this many revs back; sent in a save but never heard that it was fixed.

The butchers bill

I lost mostly Oscars and transport ac today, the loss of 60 naval bombers is the only
thing that truly hurt. Andy lost a pittiful amount of ac though.

The problem is that my fighters can only escort my long range bombers 4-6 hexes. My
only long range fighters are the A6M2 (pool now empty) and Oscar IIs. Completely useless
on their own, so I depend on that A6M5s, Tonys and Tojos join the fight. Such coordination
is a wet dream...and cannot be risked.

The alternative is to base my bombers with the Zekes in Menando - this will overstack the base,
make it extremely vulnerable to attacks and cause uncoordinated and too small strikes.

These are valuable lessons, and I will take them to heart in order to get things right on 'Der Tag'!
Will post another screenie with my plans for the coming days.

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/18/2006 3:46:10 PM)

Weda Situation

I'm reorganizing my Oscar fighters - moving the molested Daitais back to the rear areas
and moving in whole ones from China and the Home Islands.

All other air units that have suffered heavy damage have also been withdrawn.
The transport ac fleet will get some rest while we see how Andy pulls his chestnuts out of the fire [;)]

Other details are outlined on the map:

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/18/2006 4:30:26 PM)

PzB.. Hi again ..

one quick question , are you training up the LR escorts Oscar and A6M2 ? as it seems like they will get hammered whether 30 or 80 exp either way. may make front line numbers better by sending in chaff escorts just to ensure good bomber launches ( down side is of course the bombers get hit harder though).

unlucky on the CVE strike .. also he may be using replenisment CVE's to keep hit fighters on the CV's in tip top numbers . so he 'may' not be as depleted as you think.

just my 2p .. and italy 1 USA 1 is a great result .. most unexpected. congratulations America

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/18/2006 5:10:55 PM)

I'm not training my Oscars Rob, the A6M2 unit that got cut down was trained...but it
made no difference. So the long range fighters are diversions only. Need to mix them
in with crack fighter units to give these a chance to get at the Hellcats.

Was a good but bloody match between Italy and the US. I put my ant in with the US, Italy
has been bad news for Norway in many qualifiers and WC's [:'(]

A few small strikes were cut down by the uber CAP - otherwise quiet.
Still reorganizing and will try to come up with something that can surprise Andy.
Enemy carriers launched strikes against a couple of transports today.

Our subs are moving into position, 6 of them this time - a bigger effort to see whether
they can make a difference of not. Just let me put a couple of cv's in dock for a few
months and much will have been achieved.

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/18/2006 5:32:14 PM)

Thanks for the reply , I'd assumed that .. as it makes complete sense anyway. [;)].

Im not exactly a football fan myself .. basically havnt watched much at all but the USA/ITALY result caught my attention on the news this AM..

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/18/2006 5:35:07 PM)

You don't have to like football to be involved Rob...got a friend in Scotland that doesn't watch mutch ball and
here are his comments regarding the latest results [;)]

"Fu_ck, England are through, (that's the last time I ask the Great Green Arklesezuire for divine intervention) now all that stands in their way from becoming group winners is Sweden, the question is ; is my hatred of English sporting arrogance as deep as yours for the meatballers?  I mean they stand there and sing the British National anthem, how annoying is that for us Scots, plus the Welsh and (northern) Irish, at least in the game of Rugby England have the song "Jerusalem" (which is far better than God save the fuc_k)."

[:D]

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/18/2006 5:54:17 PM)

LOL . i actually agree 100% on the misuse of the national anthem for the england team . BUT he's wrong about rugby though , the England team use the natinal anthem there too, although 'jerusalem' is the unofficial anthem and imo should be adopted permanently by the english side ..

As for an English football anthem .. humm " here we go here we go here we go .. ad infintum " would be more appropriate and be memorised by footie fans too [;)] ( very few words).

I acutally hate club football , its so devicive/agressive and causes so much violence, with rugby the crowds are mixed even in internationals and both teams drink together before/during and after the match with NO trouble at all , so you can't blame alcohol on football violence alone.

end of short rant [:D]

back to the game though , it'll be interesting comparing your stock results during the late war stage, with nikmod games at the same stage.

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/18/2006 7:02:10 PM)

I wisely stay out of internal affairs in the GB Rob [;)]
It would be like putting Norway, Denmark and Sweden under one rule and adopt the Finnish
national anthem [:D]

I would have been dead as a dodo if it wasn't for the campaigns of conquest in 1942 [;)]
As it is I can afford to concentrate my forces in one front and make Andy pay for every base
he invades.

After thinking abit about Fishbed said I finally pulled of a stunt that caught Andy by surprise.
High exp Jills from Noemfoor caught a destroyer squadron off guard and torpedoed 3 of them.
The USS Kidd hit another mine and sank - so 4 enemy dd's are write offs or ready for yard time today.

The Devs, new and old, did nothing between 1.4/1.5 and 1.801 (other than making 4E bombers less useful) that would change the situation in India. An Allied player still needs to be totally aware of the possibility, and that if the Japanese player moves early enough, there is no chance of defending.

Sneer -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/19/2006 12:24:06 AM)

...... tough job in 44
i need to spend more time in your AAR to get used to inevitable

Fishbed -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/19/2006 12:38:32 AM)

Nice job with the DDs - keep moving, he can't be everywhere all the time [8D]
He wont be able to keep his CVs at sea in the same hex for an eternity, then you may strike with the big boys and sunk some bad boys...
Apparently, he's always throwing everything in every operation. There is no rotation of CV assets. Get them separated, they are in trouble. Get them together, he can't be elsewhere. So cool, he's got his own problems in a certain way [;)]

Let's clear this Wasile mess with big guns the sooner the better...

is there any people in Hollandia? A stealth transport force may disembark some forces there....?
I wonder if his bases are CAP'ed, or if he has anything that can fly naval strike there neither...

Sneer -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/19/2006 12:54:00 AM)

with so many short legged fighters his bases are certainly capped/what other use for them ?/ and PZB doesn't have excess fighters to fight there - not in this moment  IMO

I think that soon allied CV will go for R&R - they are in first line for quite a long time so sys dmg in range of 8-12 is probable
i think that with this thrust Wasile Morotai  and maybe Menado are targeted  good platform to the north
meanwhile i would expect secondary attack directly on axis direceted on kendari - but main problems will appear north of current theater within next 3-4 months and there should be even hotter battle.
I don't think Andy will loose to much time for clearing PNG - even some DD losses will not be an incetive
i think whole second half of 44 will be oriented on Marianes and PI otherwise he risks finishing this war very late
I would strike marianes first as allied need them badly to start strategic bombing and PI with amount of Japanese units given will be tough and much longer to acomplish
question is what is the best tactics to defend marianes soon ....

PzB74 -> RE: Biggest carrier vs LBA dogfight EVER!! (6/19/2006 1:04:56 AM)

Quick update before I process todays last turn!
More landings at Wasile and I've ordered a surface combat group to strike the shallow water
hex were Andy unloaded troops by mistake.

3 ca, 2 torpedo cruisers and destroyers under Nishimura.
Hope to find some transports, cve's - but not a battle fleet. Risky, but potentially rewarding.
More naval bombers put on sniping attacks.

India can be taken - and it can also be defended - hangs in the balance really.
If Japan succeeds the rewards are great, if they fail they're in big trouble.

Andy is a bit light on surface units, many convoys without escorts - but he's receivined 10 dd's
pr month. So I don't think it's critical. Not to mention all the DE's he's getting.
