FeurerKrieg -> 3/7/42 War Report (7/6/2006 5:54:40 AM)

War Report 3/07/42
The airstrike against Chandpur was moderately successful today. At least intel was correct and not a single fighter opposed the mission. Unfortunately Rangoon was socked in with weather so the chance to inflict even greater damage was missed. The strike destroyed several bombers on the ground. Also a strike at Bankha from Singapore did some damage and destroyed a Hudson on the ground there.
Betty's hit more ships at Palembang, today sinking the AK Sipora and Poelau Tello.
The Allied units at Bataan launched a futile counterattack today as well. Likely this will only hurry their surrender.
And again, the Allied planes returned to Miri to be turned away.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
Nells at Rabaul hit Lunga today doing some damage there. Invasion TF for Komorebi given orders to proceed south.

Sub Ops:
The SS I-164 was depth charged multiple times by the DD Paul Jones south of Balikpapan taking a fair amount of damage. It will make for Davao for emergency repairs.
Also after a massive damage control effort, the I-2 has managed to secure from flooding as it continues on to Tokyo to finish repairs.

FeurerKrieg -> 3/8/42 War Report (7/10/2006 2:45:56 AM)

War Report 3/08/42
The air was relatively quiet today, a small strike was launched against Singkawang as well as against some ground troops near Lashio.
Bettys from Singapore attacked the last cargo ships still floating at Palembang and promptly put it under the waves.
In the Luzon, a massive strike against the defenders at Bataan, Corrigedor and Ft Drum was followed up by a strong attack. The Allied defenders surrendered and over 33,000 enemy troops were put into POW camps. Japanese forces also occupied Butuan, isolating the Allied refugees in the center of the southern PI island.
More Allied planes shot down at Miri.
Interstingly, recon showed lots of Hurricanes over Chandpur so apparently they don't want us bombing there again, thankfully we didn't try that strike twice in a row.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
The capital ships at Truk will wait another day to put to sea, as the CS Nisshin has nearly arrived and it will be added to the OOB, being placed into the Car Div 1. Ground forces are en route to Rabaul where they will wait for the carrier fleets to catch up.
As the final elements of the base force at Sorong unloaded, our forces moved into the area, securing the oil fields and airstrip. Oscar's were immediately flown in to prevent any attempts of the Allies to bomb the oil field there.

Good question Gary. I'll post a screen of produciton figures (tomorrow maybe), but we really need Alex to comment as he keeps track of all the production stuff and would be more famliar. I can tell you we have been pulling oil out of Brunei. The oilfields at Brunei are at 271 working, Miri has anoth 36 working and Sorong has 49 working.

FeurerKrieg -> 3/9/42 War Report (7/11/2006 6:13:28 AM)

War Report 3/09/42
Based on intel reports of little or no fighters at Imphal, an airstrike was launched there. Two Hurricanes came out to fight and shot down three of our newer pilots. One of the Hurricanes was shot down. The bombers managed to hit the target though, destroying several Blenheims on the ground.
Airstrikes also launched in China and at Lashio.
An attack at Sinkawang nearly broke through the defenses. The base's fall is likely to occur very soon.
Allied planes were repulsed from Miri as usual.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
Near Suva, Vanua Levu was secured by the 6th NLF. All other SNLF forces are back in Suva base and will rest for a three days before embarking towards the remaining islands in the area. Repairs continue at Nandi. More base forces and construction units are enroute, but will still be a few days until they arrive.

War Report 3/10/42
The SS Thresher was hit by depth charges north of the Philippines, it is unclear if it was significantly damaged or not.
A solid push on the trapped Chinese units at Hsinyang saw the surrender/disbursement of the 49th Chinese Corp. The three remaining units should fall even faster now. The 50th Chinses corp was forced farther north away from Wuchow as the attempted encirclement of Chinese forces in the area continues.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/china1.jpg[/image]
Japanese soldiers must always be looking for plain-clothes soldiers from the Chinese army.

An attack on Singkawang continues to make progress, as the defenders fortifications are slowly overcome.
The air was extremely quiet today with no airstrikes launched other than recon and patrol missions.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
The invasion force of Komorebi has arrive at Rabaul and will hold while the CV Divisions follow.
Recon indicate reinforcements have arrived at Upolu, although the number are not great. Pago Pago is still lightly held, and will therefore be the primary target. Once it is secure, Upolu can be bombed by short range bombers prior to its invasion.

War Report 3/11/42
A group of ships heading into Manilla harbor encountered a minefield. Although the MSW and DD's did their best to detect and destroy the mines, the AP Kamakura Maru struck a Mk6 mine, taking a significant amount of damage. It will likely dock up in Manilla for emergency repairs.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/mk6mine.jpg[/image]
A US Mk6 Moored Contact Mine.

A solid strike was launched against Ledo. Several Mohawk IV's were shot down and the airfield there was hit hard. A couple planes were destroyed on the ground as well.
Other strikes launched on Sinkawang and near Lashio. A Chinese counterattack west of Hsinyang was soundly repulse with heavy losses to the attackers. An attack on Sinkawang made less progress than usual, but it is just a matter of time until the base is captured.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
The 38th Division continues to rest at Truk, rapidly gaining strength for the fight ahead. In the far south Pacific, Betties from Canton Island and Nells from Suva attacked the airfield at Upolu. Flak was quite heavy and the damage inflicted was light. Future attacks will be flown at higher altitudes. Additionally, a Glen recon plane spotted two large ships about 100 miles southeast of Upolu. All Bettys and Nells have been given naval search and attack orders, and a Daitai of Kates has begun moving to Canton Island via Abemama to provide some torpedo power in the event these enemy ships attempt offensive action.

FeurerKrieg -> War Report 3/12/42 (7/22/2006 5:47:08 AM)

War Report 3/12/42
All the action was in Gen Mantill's theater today.
First a large airstrike over Akyab met a defensive CAP of 19 P40E's. Although some Zero's were shot down, the bombers still got through and did a significant amount of damage to the airfield, hitting five Allied aircraft on the ground.
There were other scatter airstrikes all over China and Burma, but the big news was in Central China.
After seeing large amounts of enemy ground troops moving to Hsinyang to try and rescue the trapped pocket there, Gen Mantill targeted Ichang with a stunning paradrop raid. Two massive strikes, first 106 Sonias, then 159 Sallies, hit the lone 4th Chinese Air Base Force that was at the base. Then the 1st Para Regiment braved some moderate flak, made the drop and stormed the town, forcing the Base Force to retreat west. This victory was also made greater in that the base had significant defensive structures in place that were completely bypassed due to the airdrop. (Fort level 5) Countless Japanese lives will be spared from assaulting those fortifications.
As shown in the map below, this completely isolates several Chinese units between Ichang and Hsinyang.
Also, another strong attack at Hsinyang caused the 70th Chinese Corp to surrender, over 10,000 enemy troops were captured. There are still two units left in that pocket, the 78th and 79th Chinese Corps.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/ichang.jpg[/image]
A Paradrop cuts off many enemy troops.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
The 38th Division, somewhat rested and at 99% strength, has begun boarding transports at Truk. A large enemy ship is still spotted near Pago Pago, a group of Kates arrived at Canton Island for extra protection. Due to the limited air support there, two Chutai's of float planes were rebased to Nukufetau.
The airstrip at Nandi is nearly usable and the South Seas group will now head for Suva. A Base Force will take position at Nandi within a week.

War Report 3/13/42
Large airtrikes launched against Yenen today. Also, smaller attacks against Bankha and Singkawang.
Today the 78th Chinese corp surrender at Hsinyang, this leaves only the 79th Chinese Corp in that pocket. It will likely surrender very soon.

Chinese troops surrender near Hsinyang.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
Komorebi begins the real movement today, with the carrier fleets and invasion forces departing from Rabaul. They will head to Vella Levella first, possibly to appear to be heading for Lugna. From there they will move south as detailed previously.
Adm Yamaguchi has been put in command of the Shokokau group again. Other commanders have been assigned and taken to their stations. All Zero fighter units in the area of the operation have been reviewed and several have had their leaders replaced with some of the IJN best.
The 38th Division will also depart from Truk tomorrow enroute straight to Vella Levella, from there on to Koumac.
Farther east, Nells from Suva and Bettys at Canton Island attacked enemy ships at Pago Pago. It would appear that worries of large ships were unfounded as only a DMS, PG and AK were spotted at Pago Pago, with a Nells putting a 250kg AP bomb into the DMS Zane.
A pair of enemy AP's were reported at Tongatapu. Two destroyers at Suva will make a rush move on the island to try and ambush these transports.

FeurerKrieg -> War Report 3/14/42 - Light Surface Action! (8/4/2006 10:14:05 AM)

War Report 3/14/42
Burma and China skies were empty today. On the ground however, attacks were launched at Yenen and Hsinyang. At Hsinyang, the last of the Chinese defenders surrendered, clearing that area. At Yenen casaulties were fair on both sides.
Palembang and Sinkawang were hit. The DD Nestor was spotted near Jolo and attacked by several Bettys from Davao. It was hit with multiples torpedoes and was confirmed sunk. What it was doing that far north is anyone's guess.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
Komorebi task forces continue to converage on Vella Lavella, they should all arrive tomorrow.
In the Southeast Pacific Bettys from Canton Island attacked a cargo ship and gunboat that were leaving from Pago Pago, but no hits were scored. The Destroyers Hakaze and Yunagi that had steamed full speed from Suva throughout the night and morning had better luck however, surprising five Allied cargo ships at Tongatapu. The Destroyers put many shells into the enemy ships, heavily damaging three of them. The cargo ships were not without some defense however, and the AK Manukai actually put two 5" shells into the Yunagi, and the Hakaze took a 3" hit. Damage is under control, and the cargo ships have fled the island so the Hakaze and Yunagi will head back to Suva. While no sinkings were confirmed, subs and aircraft in the region will likely continue to harry the damaged ships if they do not sink outright. Based on recon reports of Tongatapu and Pago Pago, it would appear the Allied evacuated the islands to preserve their garrison units. Recon reports both of those islands are deserted, and Upolu is showing less troops that just a couple days ago. The AK's hit at Tongatapu were indeed loaded with LCU squads. This actually helps quite a bit since now single landing forces are all that will be needed to take the islands, allowing the South Seas Detachment to stay on ready reserve for use at Noumea. Three units have loaded up in order to hit Pago Pago, Tongatapu and Ha'apai. Upolu will be bombed a bit before it is attacked, but two SNLF units are currently prepping for the assault and resting at Suva.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/surface2.jpg[/image]
Surprise Attack on Allied evacuation at Tongatapu.

In the Solomons, Nells from Rabaul bombed Lunga again, but with few hits scored on the runway.
Recon over Port Moresby reports lots of Wirraways flying CAP, so tomorrow Zeros at Rabaul have been given sweep orders over the base. Some of the lower experienced Zero pilots can use the combat experience and will hopefully survive cutting their teeth on Wirraways.

FeurerKrieg -> War Report 3/15/42 (8/10/2006 7:56:27 AM)

War Report 3/15/42
More action in the skies over China/Burma today. Apparently the AVG has abandoned Akyab as only 4 fighters rose to defend the base today. In China, Yunan was hit hard and several bombers were destroyed on the ground.
Division sized landing forces from the Phillipines have started to unload at Tarakan, and more are on the way to other Southern Borneo bases. With the Phillipines under control, Gen AlexCobra is on the move to get us some resources in the SRA. Hopefully the Allies have taken these few months to stockpile some oil for the Japanese Empire.
Mop up of Allied units between Cagayan and Davao continues. Today a portion of the 101st PA Div surrendered there.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
Komorebi forces have arrived at Vella Levella and depart tomorrow to the south. Their course will be carefully managed in order to prevent any errors in timing over the course of the operation. Losses to transports are expected, but as long as the majority of the land forces get ashore, and the capital ships return safely from Fiji, then things will be well in hand.
Recon spotted P-39s over Midway, and a couple ships there, probably nothing to be alarmed about at this point. Periodic recon will continue in case any Allied centpac offensive attempts are made.
At Port Moresby, as planned, Zeros from Rabaul flew high level sweeps engaging nearly twice their number of Wirraways. One Zero was lost, but several pilots received valuable combat training that will prove useful when they must fight against more capable aircraft. Approximately half of the Wirraways were shot down.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/zero2.jpg[/image]
Zeros practice on Wirraways over Port Moresby.

Also today, final port expansion was completed at Truk. The facility there will now allow our minelayers to restock much closer to the Solomon island chain. This will aid greatly in preparing the area to resist the expected Allied counterattacks in the future.
Landing forces departed from Suva with their escorts today to seize Pago Pago, Ha'apai, and Tongatapu. Recon reports all three bases have been deserted by the Allied forces.

FeurerKrieg -> War Report 3/16/42 (8/13/2006 10:26:36 AM)

War Report 3/16/42
Another large strike against Akyab today. Although several aircraft were lost due to flak, the airfield was hit hard again and is definitely closed at present.
Ships unloading at Tarakan were attacked by T.IVa's from Samarinda today. The ML Kamome was hit and sunk, the AP Chojun was damaged, but still afloat.
Near Balikpapan, where another large troop convoy was scheduled to assault the beaches, the CL Glasgow showed up and chased off our fleet. Taking advantage of the fack that the convoy fleet had only one destroyer and nothing else that could hurt it, it sailed in close with all its guns firing at different target. In all 2 minesweepers, one PC and the destroyer Hato were sunk. Several transports took heavy damage, but most managed to get away. Although the Glascow was hit with many shells, no major damage was inflicted as the 3" and 4.7" shells could not penetrate the cruisers armor.

FeurerKrieg -> War Report 3/17/42 (8/15/2006 8:25:04 AM)

War Report 3/17/42
Allied aircraft took some shots at IJN troops ships near Kendari, but scored no hits. A large force of Bettys attacked Bankha, but missed the airfield. Light attacks continued on the garrison at Jolo.
In China, a large group of Sallys and Lilys hit the airfield at Yunan after recon showed many bombers on the field. The strike hit home and many SB-2c were destroyed along with a few of the valuable IL-4c's.
The landing that was turned away from Balikpapan is now headed for Tarakan, where it will presumably march down the road to conquer Samarinda and Balikpapan.
The SS Thresher was reported sunk north of the Phillipines today.
A push was launched on Yenen and suceeded in neutralizing some of the fortifications there.
Oddly, Chinese forces launched a shock attack northwest of Kweilin. As one would expect, they took heavy losses from our well armed troops.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
The 52nd Nav Guard unit laned on Tongatapu and secured the deserted island. The 6th NLF should land at Ha'apai tomorrow.
At Suva, the big ships set sail, heading towards Noumea. A few ships are sailing point in case any enemy surface fleets attempt to interdict the bombardment group. The surface combat group consists of the CA Haguro, the CL Jintu, and three small destroyers. Hopefully the small size of this group will allow it to screen against PT boats or destroyers, while the big guns of the Haguro should still be able to hold their own against all but the largest Allied ships in the area. All the rest of the capital ships are in the bombardment group, fully supplied and ready to bring some destruction upon the airfields at Noumea.

FeurerKrieg -> HMS Glasgow returns! War Report 3/18/42 (8/22/2006 10:07:50 AM)

War Report 3/18/42
The SS Narwhal fired some dud torpedoes at APD-1 near Taiwan. It was then lightly damaged by the ASW group.
Betty's at Singapore hit Bankha, a T.IVa from Balikapapan managed to hit the AK Arimasan Maru with a torpedo. Betty's & Oscar's from Singers also attacked the AK Lematang at Palembang. The Oscar's downed some Demons on the way in, and the Betty managed to put a torpedo into the cargo ship.
The last ground unit north of Davao surrendered, allowing unfettered movement of troops and supplies across that island.
Japanese Army forces in China routed a large group of Chinese soldiers northwest of Kweilin. They retreated up the road toward Kweiyang.
The interesting action of the day was the return of the HM Glasgow. This time the ship arrived outside of Tarakan, but it met a much more determined escort in the face of the DD Sazanami. The Glasgow closed the range rapidly, crossing the T. However, as the cargo and smaller ships retreated, the Sazanami stood its ground in the face of this powerful ship. The Glasgow landed hits on a Minesweeper and the AP Anzan Maru, but its luck ran out when Sazanami launched two spreads of torpedo, scoring three hits on the Glasgow. The ship was crippled and rapidly sinking, but the Sazanami fired over and over again with its 5inch guns. Although not strong enough to penetrate the cruiser's armor, its Radar, a 6inch turret, and numerous secondary turret were destroyed. Eventually the cruiser slipped below the waves in the dark night waters off Tarakan.

For sure. It was a pleasant surprise watching that fight. I'm sure Alex feels much better now about his southern Borneo offensive ops.

It must be pretty fast, on the Balikpapan run it was in and out of Betty range by dawn. I think the nearest Bettys are at Davao.

War Report 3/19/42
The SS O-23 launched a surface attack against the AP Bokuyo Maru in the waters east of Celebes, hitting with 3 torpedoes. The transport sunk rapidly in the night.
A sweep by Nates from Nanning over Kweiyang met portions of the AVG and some CAF units. Although some I-16c's were shot down, some Nates were downed by the Americans. A large Betty strike was launched againt Bankha.
Dutch torpedo planes from Samarinda continued to take their toll, hitting the ML Tsubame and the AK Katuragi Maru near Balikpapan.
Japanese forces at Kendari launched a solid attack and captured the base today. This will allow our airpower to extend its reach deeper in the SRA.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
Komorebi forces continue to close on Noumea. All units have been ordered to top off the tanks of the shorter legged vessels as they will be heading into harm's way over the next 2-4 days. The surface group will hold in its position 480 miles west of Nandi, where the Zeros at Suva have moved to to provide LR Cap. Once the carrier groups are one day from waypoint #1, the surface group will begin its run in to hit Noumea.
Lots of Wirraways and Kittyhawks spotted at Port Moresby today. Zeros at Rabaul will fly high level sweep tomorrow for some more training against Allied air units that choose to engage.
In the Southeast there was some action today. As the landing forces approached Pago Pago, the DMS Zane, damaged by a Nell about 6 days ago, was spotted leaving the harbor. The escorting gunboats ran it down and sank it in short order. One PG did take a hit from the Zane's main gun.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/surface4.jpg[/image]
No escape for the Zane.

The landing craft proceeded to land and capture the abandoned island with no trouble from the natives. Significant stocks of supplies and fuel were found on the island and will be put to good use.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/pagopago.jpg[/image]
The lovely lagoon at Pago Pago, another ideal floatplane shelter.

Another SNLF and NLF unit are set to leave Suva tomorrow to Pago Pago, where it will join up with the 6th NLF there now, and then they will all assault Upolu, the last Allied base in the area.
Multiple recon missions hav been ordered against Noumea, both Glens and Emilys will be making reports to prepare for the upcoming attacks.

FeurerKrieg -> RE: Pago Pago occupied. War Report 3/19/42 (8/27/2006 9:13:36 PM)

What a turn, things are certainly heating up. British carriers and battleships off South Borneo, KB attacked by several 4E bombers, Chinese troops on the offensive. The next update will take a bit, hopefully I'll have it done in the next 12 hours.

Keep your eyes posted! The next update will be a long one! [sm=00000613.gif]

FeurerKrieg -> Brits in SRA! Heavies attack KB! War Report 3/20/42 (8/28/2006 6:57:28 AM)

War Report 3/20/42
A very active day in the War!
The more routine action saw a large strike on Imphal that torched 4 Blenheims on the ground and shut the airfield. Chinese troops were hit by Alf and Sonias in southern China. Nate's from Nanning were over Kweiyang again, with less favorable results today. Only 1 I-16c was downed, while the AVG knocked out 7 Nates.
Chinese troops launched a strong counterattack at Ichang and drove out the 1 Para Regiment that had been holding the area for several days, the Para's retreated southeast towards Wuhan.
The SS Narwhal was attacked again north of the Phillipines, this time taking a direct DC hit.

Southern Borneo: Plenty of action here. The task force carrying the 16th Division was on orders to again attempt a landing near Balikpapan, somewhat to the east of Signal Hill. As the ships prepared to launch their landing craft, distant flashes, followed by shell splashes in the water announced the arrival of enemy ships. The task force reacted as well as it could with most transports moving at full speed under cover of the night out into the straight. Several transports were already very close to the enemy ships when they were spotted and had no chance of getting away. Late morning reports would later confirm the arrival of a strong surface group consisting of the battleship Resolution, the heavy cruiser Dorsetshire, light cruiser Emerald and the destroyer Panther. These ships mercilessly pounded those transport unlucky enough to be on the western edge of the task force. The AP Husimi Maru took multiple 15inch shells and broke into two parts before it even sank. The AP Karachi Maru took multiple 8 inch shells from the Dorsetshire and also sank quickly. In all three troop transports, and one minesweeper were sunk. Casualties amoung the 16th Division were heavy, with almost 3000 men lost at sea since rescue operations could not be undertaken due to the proximity of the enemy.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/surface5.jpg[/image]
The 16th Division is set upon again.

A second transport group, having begun to unload further up the coast, did not abort immediately but rather began to unload elements of the 4th AF Construction Bn, 23rd Engr Reg, and 31st SBF. Through the evening, SNLF elements of the 31st SBF moved inland and managed to block the primary connection between Samarinda and Balikpapan.
Near Samarinda, a trio of battleships, the Hyuga, Yamashiro and Mutsu pounded the airfields in order to ground the T.IVa's that had been harassing our ships for the past few days, this did a fair amount of damage, destroying a Brewster 339D in the process. Also, three regiments of tanks stormed the coastline and began unloading without incident. The 4th, 7th and 14th Tank Regiments all began to surround and cutoff Samarinda.
After a rough night, the daytime brought no relief.
The group unloading the engineering units, already on the lookout for heavy British surface ships, suddenly spotted incoming British carrier based aircraft!
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/britcarrier.jpg[/image]
When Stringbags attack.

Apparently the Brits were not happy about the Sazanami sinking the Glasgow and decided to send in the Stringbags to take out the destroyer. The ship again earned its stripes though, outmanuevering multiple groups of Swordfish and not taking a single torpedo hit.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/sazanami2.jpg[/image]
The skillful Sazanami survives again.

The PC Ch2 and AP Anzan Maru were not so lucky however and both took multiple torps. Both of these ships were already damaged and broke apart rapidly, taking many crewmembers down with them. Thankfully the Anzan had offloaded many soldiers in the night or casaulties could have been worse.
In a small victory, the IJN big guns continued to pound Samarinda throughout the daylight hours, destroying a few T.IVa's on the ground and severly damaging the airfields there.

The situation in Borneo.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
Again, to start with the minor activity, Upolu was bombed by long range naval bombers from Suva and Canton Island doing minor damage. Zero's at Nandi moved back to Suva as the battleships they were flying cover for will move out of range through the upcoming night.
Zero's from Rabaul flew to Port Moresby and were met by several waves of Wirraways and Kittyhawk I's. The Kittyhawk's performed fairly well, shooting down a couple of our less than experienced aviators. Most of our superior pilots mopped up well however, shooting down over twenty enemy planes for the loss of five Zeros.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/zero3.jpg[/image]
IJN Combat School.

Beauforts attacked Salamaua again today, with little effect.

Komorebi started in earnest as the sun's rays fell upon the islands of the south Pacific today. While the expected fly by of a distant Catalina in the morning hours was not a cause for alarm, the Zero's on CAP were alert as ever given the proximity to two significant airbases at Luganville and Noumea.

Early in the morning, 11 two-engined bombers were spotted flying in from the east. The Zero's dove on these bombers, splashing them all in short order. A couple Zeros were damaged in this attack, but most regained altitude just in time to see a second small group coming from the south. This group was small, 4 fighters escorting 3 LB-30's. The P-40B's were quickly dealt with, but the LB-30s were bristling with machine gun fire and actually shot down two Zeros. Only one LB-30 was downed but another was damaged. They managed to release their bombs but they fell well wide of their target, the AP Kyosei Maru in the invasion force task group.

Some Zeros landed to rest and refuel, while others took off and went to altitude. They were at good altitude again when the major attack of the day came in. 36 Heavy bombers and 3 mediums, escorted by two dozen P-40B's came in around 6000 feet. The Zeros dove on the assault with determination, the previous loss of the Kaga solid in their minds. The Zeros split off, with some occupying the escorts and the rest bravely attacking the formations of heavies. Those attacking the escorts faired well, destroying 75% of them and driving off the rest. The planes attacking the bombers hit again and again, but the large planes proved hard to bring down. The limited amount of 20mm ammo limited how much damage could actually be done before disengaging, as the 7.7mm MG bullets had virtually no impact on the armored bombers. Still, several heavies were shot down, and nearly all of them damaged to some extent or another. Tons of bombs were dropped near the valuable carriers, but most fell wide. Some however, hit their mark, with the Skokaku being hit 11 times. Although the bombs did start some fires on the deck, none managed to penetrate the deck of the ship and cause any major damage. The fires are worrysome, and all efforts are being made to put them out.

One last small strike of 4 heavies and 4 escorts arrived as the sun was going down, and again all the escorts were downed, but only one heavy could be shot down. The remaining three, although damaged still dropped their bombloads, and one bomb from each plane managed to hit the Hiryu. One bomb did penetrate the flight deck and hit an aircraft ammunition storeage area causing a fair (but not catastophic) amount of damage to the hanger deck. Repairs will be effected, and fires fought throughout the night.

Allied LBA attacks.

And the results...
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/carrierhits.jpg[/image]

As night falls, the situation is still reasonable. The battleships remain undetected, and will arrive just a few miles off the coast of Nouemea tomorrow, ready to spend a full evening bombarding the airbases there the following day. Because the battleships will be so near, the Carriers will begin moving away from the area this evening, which will put them at the very edge of the range of the P-40Bs. The P-40Es and P-39s at Noumea will continue to be out of range of the carriers, but not the invasion force or the battleships.
One group of Zeros will fly LR CAP over each (the invasion group and the battleships). While it is likely a strong attack will get through, the landing forces are spread quite thinnly over many ships and losses there should be light. The battleships armor should be able to resist the GP bombs the bombers are dropping due to the less than ideal airfield size they are flying from (Size 4). By tomorrow the invasion group will be able to hit the beaches at Koumac the following night, the same time that the battleships will be hitting the airfields at Noumea.

Hopefully the amount of destroyed and damaged planes today will make any strikes tomorrow less effective. CAP levels of the carriers has been increased to the maximum for tomorrow as it is the last high risk day, since the next day will see the carriers in range only of unescorted bomber attacks, as they move north and begin to provide LR CAP over the invasion group only, from outside P-40B range.

FeurerKrieg -> Fighting off Balikpapan continues! War Report 3/21/42 (8/31/2006 9:54:59 AM)

War Report 3/21/42
Heavy airstrikes preceded an attack on Yenen that made little progress. Attacks against the Chinese east of Ichang were more successful, with that road being cleared, and the path to Ichang opened.

Southern Borneo:
The battleships that spent the previous night pounding Samarinda, headed west to hunt for the British. They found them and immediately fired a full volley of Long Lances, none of which hit in the initial assault. Through the course of two engagements in the night, the British exchange fire with the Japanese ships, Hyuga, Yamashiro, Mutsu and their escorts. All the British ships were hit hard, with Resolution taking a 16.1 inch shell from Mutsu, and the cruiser each taking multiple 14 inch shell hits. Resolution took a torpedo, as well as Hyuga. Hyuga's damage is not severe, thankfully. The Dorestshire lost several guns to shell hits, and the Resolution lost one of its 15 inch turrets from a hit from the Mutsu. While it is unclear if they will sink or not, they have been reduced as a fighting force. The DD Wakatake was lost in the battle as well.

HMS Resolution
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/resolution.jpg[/image]

The British carriers still look to be in port at Balikpapan.
The 16th Division made it to the coastline at Samarainda, but has yet to unload from the transports.
An assault on Tarakan was launched, but due to a lack of supplies and ammunition progress made was minimal.
[image]http://bfeurer.home.comcast.net/surface6.jpg[/image]
More fighting off Balikpapan.

Feurer Krieg Area Report
A small attack was launched against Upolu.
Oscars at Lae flew sweep over Port Moresby today and killed many Wirraways. Unfortunately they are not much of a match for the Kittyhawks there, and several Oscars were shot down.

Near Noumea, everything went as planned. The transports will hit the beaches at Koumac tonight, the Battleships and Cruisers were fortunate to be under cloudy weather today as they parked 60 miles off the coast of Noumea. They have been given order to spend the next 24 hours shelling the base there, using recon information gain by multiple Emily flights over the past two days. Hopefully they will destroy some Allied heavy bombers on the ground in the evening. A Glen also flew over, but was caught by P-40E's and shot down.
Recon report large amounts of P-39s at Luganville, and many P-40E's at Noumea. These are all out of range of KB at this point, but still pose a threat if escorting torpedo bombers against the battleships or transports.
The KB was again attacked, but as hoped the offensive power of the Allied planes was less. The P-40B's were flying at the very limit of their range and as such were not an effective escort. Allied strikes were again in parts today. The first strike came in the morning hours as 6 B-17E's, escorted by two P-40B's flew in to attack. 3 B-17E made bombing runs but were quite distrupted by the harassing Zeros. The next strike was stronger, consisting of 11 B-17E and 9 LB-30's escorted by 6 P-40Bs. The Allied bomber pilots may have been a bit shaken by yesterdays losss, as several damaged bombers turned for home before even getting near their targets. Still, 4 LB-30s, and all the B-17's made it through and managed to put one more GP bomb on the Hiryu, which thankfully hit the side of the ship and deflected harmlessly.
In the afternoon, two more strikes came in at the KB, one of 6 unescorted B-17s, half of which were shot down, and the rest ran for home. The next was 5 B-17 and 9 LB-30, escorted by 5 P-40Bs. The B-17's were damaged and turned for home, but 4 LB-30's made it through, all missed their marks.
No attacks were launched on the invasion force or the Bombardment group.
The KB will move out of P-40B range tomorrow, but still provide LR CAP for both the invasion and bombardment groups. The next day it will be able to move farther north still as it will only need to cover the landing groups. The 38th Division should hit Koumac in three or four more days.
