Status: offline 		My troops look to alll reach the x3 terrain blockade point just outside Sian. I hope these troops can hold for a few bloody attacks, but who knows at this stage with Allied firepower as it is. They're digging in now.

Status: offline 		This is probably my best IJN fighter group, which has been defending at Hakodate and on Hokkaido throughout. A lot of golden boys here, and the Allies will find it difficult to get a good VP score if I can keep them in N1K5s.

Yeah, if you had monitored your resources earlier you might have mitigated your current situation a bit. Maybe you end up with another 100,000 supply tops. Not really going to impact it much more than that. In other words, once the allies are able bomb the HI, bad things happen. Nothing new there.

You're in really good shape considering the date here. Sure, you run out of resources, so what? The plan is to get into '45 before running out of fuel/resources and then you finish the war easily on your HI/Supply reserves. You're 9/45. You got this easily.

He has still not bombed either Tokyo or Osaka. Can't figure that out. A few strikes to each of those and I'd be running on fumes for sure. It's interesting what the Allies can't see and don't know unless they've been on this side.

I'm beginning to withdraw all excess air units and I've turned off replacements for units on the Home Islands long ago. Might even withdraw some engineers and other less needed units now. Anything to save.

The Allies turn their 4Es on the bases I nKorea, including the big one at Fusan. Taking out a level 9 airbase next to the Home Islands should be dangerous, and the Allies do suffer some losses, but their mix of sweeps and B-29s massed in one day is too much for the staunchest of defenses. These were not our top groups. A lot of training groups and obsolete fighters. Fusan is demolished and the Allies burn 350+ planes to about 200+ of their own lost. Yuck.

All troops are moving back in order, and there is no place the Soviets can halt the process to cut them off before they reach Korea. That's good at least.

The FR-1 Fireball makes it appearance. Wow.

These weren't the best groups I have, firstly, but it's also that I've setup for low-layered CAP to focus on frustrating the P-47/P-51 high sweeps. The planes that can fly fast with high maneuver at low altitudes (like the Spit and Corsair) do much better. I think the Fireball is in this category but I'd have to look at the stats.

The Allied sweeps are tough right now with the addition of better Corsairs, Fireballs, Bearcats, plus now the P-51H. Some have trouble one turn or another, but overall he's mixing it up enough to get about 3:1 with 2/3 of the sweeps. I'll not be able to defend the air in Korea except occasionally.

The B-29s try a very high raid on Nagaoka which yields very few hit for the number of bombers involved and also results in the loss of a handful to the Nf, which seem able to get up in time to 25k with their radar.

Bombardments at Keijo have been devastated by the defensive counterfire so far, but the Soviets have more moving in. All retreats are going steadily toward Kanko, but shouldn't all reach there for another 10-12 days. Until then I'll have about 3.5k AV at Keijo in 1-2 days, 3k AV at Genzan with another 1k AV in each of the two x3 terrain hexes between, which are hard to reach from the West side of the peninsula.

Status: offline 		For what it's worth, the Ki-94-II is now researching. If made, this will be a very limited run of production. It'd be cool to use and see how tit works, but the Allies will have jets by then too, so it'll be a moot point.

They definitely will not stand up to P80As.

In my Ironman game the AI got them early so I had to face them with lesser planes, but the AI also got so many models beyond the KI-94-IIs that they really didn't stand out.

I think it was you who made a statement recently somewhere that the Allies will never get an air frame that can maneuver with the more maneuverable Japanese planes. I immediately thought, "Oh yeah, wait until he gets a look at the FR-1. Then I actually looked up the maneuver rates of some of the Japanese air frames and was immediately sobered. Even the Fireball, which has the highest low level maneuver ratings of any Allied air frame, doesn't come close to matching that of the Japanese air frames.

However, even though it doesn't achieve the maneuver ratings of the Japanese air frames, the FR-1 is a tough customer with excellent speed and climb rate. The build rate is fairly low allowing a small number of squadrons to be converted to it.

The low-layered CAP is kind of like the MiG-17 tactics in the Vietnam war against the USAAF. Low and slow, but with a lot of bait and shoot teams.

Spits are the ultimate tool against this tactic since they can do it all; speed, maneuver and firepower. Just not always the range the Allies need.

Status: offline 		Here is a look at the three new USN airframes in relation to the Spit VIII, which is the best for mid-level sweeps against the low-layered CAP. The Fireball certainly has the best manoeuvre to combat this tactic, matched with its good speed and durability. It's guns are suspect, with only the 4 x 50cal MG, wing mounted.

The F4U-4, which being a speed upgrade, has reduced manoeuvre from the F4U-1D, which has been the best sweeper at mid-altitudes.

The Bearcat is very good all around, and has done well so far.

I'm lucky the Fireball comes in low production numbers!

The Allies begin to attempt a cull of Japanese fighters in Central China at Wuchang. This base and Hankow are used together, but it won't be long before the bombers come and I'll need to evacuate. That's really fine though now as I've done what I need to ensure units get into the x3 to try and form blocks in the mountains surrounding the Central Plains.

The Allies begin a slow march across the SRA taking out Soerabaja. This area has only stragglers now from other captured bases, and I'll attempt to make Balikpapan a last stand base since it has plentiful supply and must be invaded amphibiously.

All ships now moving toward Babeldaob and up through to the Home Islands. The vast majority will make it and deliver the goods right up until the beginning of October it looks like. That's icing on the economic cake for sure.

Troops have now moved into Genzan, and some appear to be moving across country to the hexes between Genzan and Keijo. My forces are there but I need another week to really flecsh those blocking points out. They should get 1k AV each to start, then another 1k AV each once the troops coming from Mukden arrive shortly thereafter. I've got tanks racing from the Rashin area to fill in as well now, and I'll be sending a few free IDs and tank brigades from Honshu to provide emergency reserve in Korea. I'll also begin to send in some small naval guards to hold the unoccupied coastal hexes to dissuade any 'Inchon' style landings.

The Allies close Hankow after numerous effective sweeps and bombing strikes.

Somehow also they try for Keijo fields but sweeps seem not to fly. The B-29s arrive first and it's a massacre! Shot down 30+ today. Nice.

The Allies continue to sweep in Hokkaido and suffer 1:1 altogether against our top IJN groups.

Tension falls but Genzan bombardments yield horrible results so far for the Allies, which is a great sign for the defending possibilities here in spite of the massive firepower advantage the Allies will have.

The Allies had been steadily building up at Keijo, but I hadn't realised how much until this turn. I knew the base would be safe for a while with its heavy urban defensive terrain and level 6 forts, and I've also been getting as much as possible into the hex. The Allies decided to test their luck without any ground, naval or air bombardments. They did reduce forts to 5, but in spite of getting 10k AV+ of very good late war Soviet troops into the base, they ended up getting a 1:11 with massive casualties.

Almost 800 Allied devices were destroyed outright, with another 2,000+ disabled. This is about the best I could have hoped for here, and even with reduced forts, it will be tough in the next few for the Allies without a lot of prep time and bombardments. That should give time to strengthen nearby positions and dig in.

Spit XIVs perform much better.

I'm also a bit disappointed with P51Hs. They seem to be hit or miss, doing really well one turn and abysmally the next.

P47Ns have been the most consistent performers behind the P80As which are in a class of their own.

Tempest 2s are strong performers as well.

My post above is mainly looking at Allied fighters against the low layered CAP. So the usual sweeping rules won't really be as relevant, especially the P-47 and other high altitude monsters flying at >40k. It's designed to beat them, and it does the job, surprisingly. The P-47 has suffered in this one at about 1:1 throughout the versions. The 'N' does do better, but I thought the extra speed would make it dominant as it was in my first game. It doesn't.

The P-51H up high is okay against a low CAP, but I bet if used at 20k it would work well, since it has a bump in maneouvre as well as speed (23 at <20k).

The Tempest should be a good mix too.

Still going here. A lot to catch up on.

The Allies are pushing up into the NW of China, toward Sian. Their attacks are hurting the defenders in x3 but they haven't broken through yet. This has at least given time to get another block in place North of Sian.

The most important retreat from Manchuria to Korea has gone surprisingly well. I had thought I'd get some units caught, and there was the potential that some of the Soviet tanks could whip around and cut off big armies. They haven't and the blocks in x3 across from Keijo to Genzan are now in place.

A very important hold happened one hex to the East of Keijo on the 30th. A small IJA force led by only two divisions held off seven Guards Rifle Divisions!!

Reinforcements will move in next turn and this will hold for the foreseeable future.

Massive B-29 strikes are working down the defenders at Peiping.

The Allies make some progress, getting a Marine ID up to Sian on the yellow roads to take the base. I'll try to keep the hold on the road blocking the main force until it breaks to delay.

Peiping begins to crumble, slowly, and Taihoku falls.

The Allies try their first ever raid on Tokyo; a small strike at night with Devastators at 17k and B-29s at 33k!

Must be to assess the defence. I'll up the NF groups here, but flak is very strong. Crazy that there have been no strikes on Tokyo or Osaka. Or Kobe, Gifu, Maebashi, Yokohama, Chiba, Okayama, Hiroshima or Hamamatsu.

The Allies bludgeon Peping with B-29 attacks. These slowly ramp up from 100/day to between 600-700 B-29s (!!!)by the 10th, when a final shock attack takes the base. The defendes did well, took a tithe from the Allies and actually retreated rather than surrendering, which I'd not expected. They're now in a x3 hex to the West fro Peiping, offroad. That's good, as it's in LR CAP range from PortArthur. I can still get a few points back for these troops I hope.

Other than that, the mop-up in the SRA continues, with Batavia falling to the Aussies. All of Sumatra and Java now in Allied hands, with Balikpapan still uninvaded. Some resources are stilll transiting from Babeldaob, loading in a few small bases nearby. I'll keep this going until he stops it.

The Korean blocking positions are now very firmly established. I don't think the Soviets will be able to break through for a good while. Troops from Peiping will come down, but will be a bit beat up too.

In NW China the blocks are now in place to guard the mountain approaches to the Central plains. Tanks are railing over too to provide a reserve since the bulk of Allied units seem to be heading either up here or to Shanghai. I'm sure the Formosa troops will land across soon enough as well. Hong Kong and Canton are still well defended. I'll have to get blocks in place farther up to the SW of Changsha in the rough woods.

The Allies try a major air offensive over Japan, hitting several dozen smaller airfields, but without any sweeps in advance. Or ... the Allies forget to rest arriving air groups and this results in a massacre of 4E over the Japanese home islands!

Small packet of 7-35 4Es hit a variety of targets, but all aiming for airfields, not strategic targets. They did hit some planes on the ground, destroying about 40, but lost over 140 4Es on the day, including about 35+ of the newly arrived B-17G.

Seeing these planes in theatre signifies a dramatic change in the situation of defense. There will be more organized and combined raids soon with 500-1,000 planes taking part. Strategic targets will not be able to be defended, but the defenses have to get some points back, so an increase in fighter concentrations over Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be set up. Also, I'll convert more training groups to kami CAP, get NF into more supporting and concentrated positions, and bring all remaining AA units off of Hokkaido. Most strat targets are wiped out there.

There will be a lot of new things coming soon.

On the 12th there were only the milkrun bombings in China and a few important ground actions. The Allies crashed over the river into Shanghai, destroying a bunch of tanks and guns, and di the same with three armored units NW of Sian, onto the block on the yellow road to the Central plains. The three tank units there were pretty messed up, which is good, but 25 more units are moving, so I won't attempt to push them back. Just sit and dig. I have 1300AV of experienced troops from Burma here, two IDs in the 90s for experience.

Not much action in the air these turns after the big losses on the 11th, bu some very nice developments on the ground.

The Allies held near Sian against a shock attack from the IJA, so I'll stop here and move these troops across country toward Anking. These will get there but it'll take a while. I think Anking will hold until they arrive based on the what the Allies have there (only 1200AV).

To the NW of Sian the blockade on the river crossing hex was shocked by the 4th Marine ID. It was almost completely wiped out, with 350 devices destroyed and another 436 disabled. That means of course there is not enough here to prevent another forced shock by follow-on troops. It also means a lot of nice permanent VPs and another headache for the Allies. I assume he'll begin heavier bombing here and eventually a much bigger crossing. Hopefully my tank ID will arrive in time for that!

Takao was attacked, and will not last long.

The troops formerly of Peiping are being hit now by aobut 150 Soviet bombers/day. This is good, as I'm about ready to send some Ki-83 up there to interdict from Port Arthur. No sweeps have been involved, so this could be fun.

Heijo has been transformed into a very large Allied airfield, and I'll take a stab at hitting it since there are relatively few fighters there. This would be a rare chance if I can pull it off. Sweeps and about 300 2E flying from Hiroshima will try it out. Fingers crossed.
