October 16-17, 1945

A few new things. The Allies land at Chaochow on the coast near Swatow. Looks like they were a bit unprepped!

Also, my sweeps arrived in severe weather at Heijo, and got about 2:3 on the day, but the bombers didn't fly. Probably for the best in the end, as I'm sure I would have lost a lot of planes. Maybe they could have hit the 900 bombers there, but it'a a big risk. I'll keep options open for future since he doesn't know I had bombers set, yet.

Takao is taken, so I'm sure all of those troops will move to China and go for either Hong Kong/Canton or march up near Changsha. I'll bring IJA forces back toward the central region from Sinyang and other areas to solidify things.

October 18-20, 1945

Big turns. On the 18th many of the persistent milk-runs continued to degrade IJA troops dug in across China.

On the 19th a massive combined set of air strikes hit manpower and individual strategic targets in Nagoya over the night and day phases. This was 90% of the combat report. The night strikes got fires up over 80k, and I'm sure did a lot of damage to HI/LI/resources, which the day strikes hits airframe factories and messed them up pretty bad. Luckily the ones here are mostly strike planes, not fighters, and I have plenty in the pools. More than I'll need.

So it nets a lot of VPs, but the fires still burn. There was a cost at least, as 150+ 4Es were downed, and 120+ fighters also taken out. The CAP did well, pilot losses were low, and more NF have moved in for any follow-ons.

I've re-worked some of the other big industrial targets too now that this kind of mega-strike is in available with the B-17Gs and furhter deliveries of B-29s have arrived. I should see some RAF bombers soon too, which is cool. I think Lancasters and Sterlings are coming, is that right? With some massive big bombs too.

My Slightly less-significant CAP trap near Peiping did go off as planned on teh 20th, with about 50 Soviet bombers shot down for no losses.

This is the result (so far). Fires burn for days and will destroy more before they're out here. It's interesting to see he's targeting for VPs, not for usage. Why else hit the 30 size Ki-46 Dinah III factory? I certainly am not short on recons right now, and have little need for them anymore.

A player who plays Japan could target airframes and engines in a planned system, tking away defensive capability. I hope to do this in my late Allied game. I'll detail plans there, once I'm in range, which will be a few months.

October 21, 1945

A huge night strike hits Osaka, not Nagoya, on the 21st. This of course has some devastating effect, as probably 800-1,000 bombers take part. It's hard to know as there are so many small packets. Maybe more even?

The combat report was mostly just this night strike.

The Allies lose another 70+ 4Es on the night. Osaka is still burning, and this is target where that means a lot. It will be a very effective strike in a few days, more so if he keeps hitting it. Nagoya will now have a chance to put fires out and the follow-on damage will be limited there.

Another BIG night strike on the 23rd. I won't detail it all. I will say that the Lancs seem very vulnerable to the NF.

By the end fires get to around 100k.

During the day phase they're still at 18k. If he just keep this up and then goes for Tokyo, the entire Japanese economy will be decimated.

The NF and flak take a toll, but as you can see the losses are much lighter from a concentrated night only attack, and the results may take a bit longer, but they will be devastating. If he'd hit Osaka and Tokyo in the summer of 44, this war would have been over much, much earlier.

October 24, 1945

On the 24th I set a bunch of LR CAP all over China. Some more successful than others. North of Sian this is the one and only day he's run sweeps.

Over Shaoing, near Hangchow, some of the front gunned B-25 and A-26 damaged a lot of fighters which then turned the replay into a ramming fest.

Bombardments in Korea show that the Allied still risk it if they try a DA or an SA at Keijo.

My least favorite part of 1945+. Losing so many good pilots to this tactic. And I haven't really found much in the way to abate the behavior. Basically, as the clock ticks deeper into '45 it just becomes much more prevalent.

Have you any thoughts/ideas on mitigating this?

If it happens against 4E, especially B-29s, I'm fine with it. It generally happens though against front-gunned 2E.

I've had some luck against the A-26 shooting down dozens at a time when unescorted. I think it depends a bit on altitude, and I was trying to set multiple altitudes to get a range of attack types, as well as layers in case sweeps were sent. Turns out the bombers changed a bit too and came up higher, maybe increasing frontal attacks and thus ramming?

So it's a bit of a crap shoot, but may have the result of at least forcing the Allies to escort/sweep more for these milk runs. And on the day results were still better than 1:1, so that's a positive at this stage. Helped to have unescorted DB-3M involved over Sinyang.

Thanks. The supply is now dipping considerably. No more Manchurian resources or industry. Already low on resources. Fuel fine. Now though some hits being taken to the big industrial centers like Nagoya and Osaka.

So I'll continue to moderate usage, but it's tough when airframe replacement takes so much supply. I do question this decision. Not sure at all why rolling up a fresh airframe costs so much more than flying one. It really dooms Japan in the late game.

October 25, 1945

More pain for Osaka. A night strike is met by an even stronger NF force with some FB thrown in at the higher altitudes he's been favoring. The Allies have dropped as high as 30k here, which resulted in very few hits, but may be designed to spread out the defenses. Regardless, there are enough hits down low to warrant a continuation of this night bombing tactic. In fact this has been available for around the last 16 months of game time since the Allies had a size 9 field at Shikuka.

With it's huge manpower number and extensive HI/LI, Osaka will take continued damage from these fires. It's already about 1/3 destroyed. All available AA is well allocated here and at Tokyo, with smaller amounts descending in number with importance of target to other bases. Tokyo has a flak number of about 120. Osaka about 110. Other bigger bases are around 55-60, with moderately important targets in the 30-40 range.

On the day the Allies lose another 70-80 4E but do down a number of NF/FB and also get a chunk of strat VPs from the fires. I'll post in info screen soon.

For new, I always looked at it as having to spend the fuel to ferry the plane to wherever it was needed. Yeah, I know when you are replacing planes at Gifu, this doesn't really hold, but when you are taking planes in OZ � anyway that's what I tell myself and move on.

Thanks. The supply is now dipping considerably. No more Manchurian resources or industry. Already low on resources. Fuel fine. Now though some hits being taken to the big industrial centers like Nagoya and Osaka.

Yeah. It's all an abstraction. I get it, and I know Japan benefits in the earlier game. I'd almost have it be harder then, or more costly, just so it'd be easier and cheaper now!

The first time I used the J1N1-Sa, probably.

It's radar not only works in hex, but helps reaction between hexes. Now the Randy NF has active radar too, I believe, as doesn't the Frances NF.

October 26, 1945

More night strikes on Osaka. This time, probably due to a number of groups being depleted, crews having higher fatigue, and the increased amount of CAP added, the NF did very well to disrupt the bombing runs. A lot of NF/FB were destroyed on the day, but there were NO hits to the industry in spite of several hundred bombers taking part!!

Losses were about equal, at 40+ each side, but of course the 4E provide 2 VPs each. So this is a great result and now the fires are nearly out. A lot of extra damage incurred though from the continued burning. I'll post a shot later.

The Allies have now moved a big army into Shanghai, have another big army moving into the central area from the Yangtze across country to avoid my blockade in x3 territory, and have invested Amoy and taken Swatow. They're also moving advance units into Kukong, but have no hope of takin that base yet.

The defense is adjusting, with troops pulling back to the central Changsha area, a reserve coming down from the mountains to sit on river crossings in good territory to protect approaches to Chungking, and moving further to block the troops moving from Sian.

Here is a look at a few of my NF groups right now, one IJNAF and one IJAAF. I think a lot of players underestimate what the Japanese NF can do against these massive strategic strikes. The can't stop them but they can exact a price.

The J1N1-Sa is the mainstay of the defense with it's early arriving radar sets. The Nick NF can do some damage too but doesn't always make contact early enough to get kills. Still this group has done well. Most of these pilots have acquired the majority of these kills in their NF roles, usually starting at 75exp or so. A few were transferred once NF became available in 43 as you can see by their high mission counts.

Almost half of the HI/LI now destroyed at Osaka. A few more airframe factories damaged a few points as well, but fires almost out now.

Here is th industry screen to show a few things.

Firstly, these are the factories that failed last turn, Tokyo being the major problem, with too few resources to run HI/LI.

Secondly, resources dropping precipitously to now only 4.2 million (usually up around 20 million.

Thirdly, plenty of HI saved up to make planes until the end, that is if I can fly them using remaining supply!

Replacements are off for all except a few that are forming a reserve for Korea. I do have three bases now still getting to level 6 forts. Just spots that don't seem asvulnerable until the Allies are all around the HI. Then a bunch will get shut off.

I've disbanded a lot of smaller construction units to save on supply and restricted most LBA to training and CAP. Not much need for anything else anyway.

I've also withdrawn the majority of training units and converted most F/FB training to kami so they can fly CAP. Has the dual effect of giving a large number of pilots EXP training.

I've been in a resource deficit for a while now so the loss of HI/LI won't hurt too much to start. The resources will just make the rest function and produce. Soon though it'l all start go get a bit dire as more resources on the HI get torched and the HI/LI also reduces significantly in Osaka and Tokyo.

Sounds like a very interesting and long-lived WWII vet, his father in law, who passed. I'm sure he's detailed something about it in his AAR.

After my game with Jocke I knew of it, but prioritised fuel/oil for continued supply production. In this game with the Northern strategy Dan played so well after taking over I ended up being short of resources, as those were the first big strategic centres he could bomb and take out. Toyohara, Kushiro, Sendai and other Northern bases were hit early, and in spite of a last ditch effort to get as many back from the SRA as I could it may not be enough for the duration into 46.

Learning curves take so long to develop in this beast of a game. In five years if I'm playing another IJ endgame I'll know more, but may encounter something else new and won't be prepared for that.
