I'll keep some search going around the perimeter, but if this is the real thing I will look forward to seeing it get in close.

Indeed! The JFB in me salivates at the opportunity to savage a 1945 invasion on a shoestring such as this one. The location of the Death Star is effectively known. What CVE or other CAP coverage could this group have for the trip in? On a related note, where are your Peggy (T) groups right now?

It's probably any Brit CV/CVL/CVE that have arrived in the last 5-6 months. A lot of CVEs and some CVLs arrive if I remember correctly. I'm sure if he had a few good CVs they would go to the North.

The majority of Peggy-T are in the North, with about 100 flying today to hit Alied troops without any AA cover.

There is one group down South, which I've just converted into my first kami unit of the game! I would have kept them with TT but there are limited bases allowing TT here due to HQ placement and supply, so I've had to pick and choose to make sue I'vve got enough coverage on certain vectors and also that I'm as far out of bombing range as possible.Saigon has some Bettys with Oscars. Georgetown has the kami Peggy-T and a TB group. Taiping has some DBs. Pratchup has more TBs. Chumpon has Frances and there are more Frances at Pisanoluke.

He's been dancing around trying to find my range and draw a strike for one a week now. I've got it dialled back and will just wait until the whole mess comes in close enough. Fingers crossed.

When did you get kami capabilities?

Yes, just a few turns ago. I've only converted one group so far, but I'm assessing which others to commit.

Wow! Great news!

I don't know about the rest of the peanut gallery, but I'm eagerly anticipating earnest use of a combined aerial assault on his fleet-including lots of Kamikazes.

Haha!

I'll be a bit more measured in my response, and kamis will be used periodically, but not wholeheartedly. I want to make good VP balance decisions and target when I see an opportunity.

I'm in June '45 against an Ironman Nasty AI and have been facing kamikazes for some time now.

It's tough for them to get through a 1500 plane cap over the DS.

The leakers that do get through have just as tough a time getting through the '45 flak capabilities of the ships.

I have had 3-4 CVEs laid up in repairs at any given time, but have only lost one CVE to kamikazes so far.

The Allied fleet is so huge in mid '45 that a little attrition is not going to have a measurable impact on operations.

I've felt this even earlier without improved flak. Now it's just tough to hit the DS, at all, even if major strikes get through.

I hope to use the kamis more as a menace to unprotected or less protected shipping. They're not a war winner, but a component of an attritional strategy focusing mostly on airframes, but also some on any shipping I think might be vulnerable. The DS is only in one place at a time, and that concentration of force opens other opportunities, I hope.

Feb 22, 1945

Up North on the 21st the DS stays away and the strikes I sent found some targets. Nice to see after a long hiatus of hitting anything on the oceans. It looks like the ships unloading in the clear had some guns and motorised support for the Marine divisions now at Bihoro, so that is doubly good, to nail their rear elements. It would be nice if some of these were the AA guns that are embedded in these divisions too.

I also did get one of the single DD raiders this turn, and surprisingly it was an Jill TB with one fish that sent the Nestor under immediately. I’ll restrict range a bit more next turn but keep these flying.

The ground strikes hit mostly the Marines as well, getting good results. The 1st division will have some filling out to do now and shouldn’t be very resilient if this is a long term battle at Bihoro. Now that Kushiro is winding down I see a movement icon in the direction of Bihoro from Kushiro. I don’t see any others, so I’m going to divert all troops in their set up blocking hexes back and around to Bihoro, leaving only 500AV in the x3 terrain on the road to Muroran and another 500AV in the hex next to Asahikawa. I can always bring a bit more in if he moves that way with some force.

I just realised there are also some 15cm guns of the 31st Special Base Force at Ominato, and I might bring those over to use at Bihoro. That would give a little bit of extra punch. I do have the Wake unit for any future landings on Honshu.

I tried to pull a fragment of the Wake unit off of Paramushiro to get it sunk and thus be able to rebuild it all back on Honshu. I’ll see tomorrow if it got loaded or not in time before the Allies noticed and sunk those ships.

In a few days there is an influx of divisions arriving, about 15 in total, on the Home Islands. This comes at a crucial time when I can now afford to send any free units to Hokkaido to shore up defenses there.

A while back someone, I think Chickenboy, asked about my pools. Here is a look at production and pools, as they are, right now. Not much excess in the top line fighters as you can see, but production is cranking. Every day I get about 8 x Frank Ki-84r, 7 x Ki-83, 5 x Oscar IV, 4 x Ki-84b, 4 x Ki-100-II and 3+ Tojo IIc. So 30+ good and decent fighters a day. Oh, and the Randy Ia begins producing at 50/month in March too.

I'll continue to make Oscar IV and Tojo IIc for the duration as they use the Ha-35 engine, which is still plentiful even though I've shifted some of the factories to other more useful types, like the Ha-43 and Ha-45 for the late game.

Right now I'm shifting to an attacking mode where I'll choose my targets rather than setting LR CAP to catch Allied sweeps and bombers. This should allow some groups to flesh out and pools to grow again for a while. The forts and AA can protect Bihoro for the time being, and I'll pop in occasionally to keep him honest. I've not tried yet, but the radar there should make LR CAP much more effective.

There is a decent pool of IIb Oscars that can be used for the arriving training groups and a future kami role, although these will not be as effective with the Allied flak as it is now.

For the IJNAF I'll be getting 8+ x N1K5 Georges, 6 x Sam (once all factories repair), 3+ x J2M5 Jack, and 1+ x N1K1 George (still building for the 41k max altitude).
It'l take a while to fill out the KB with the Sam, and I've got one group of LBA using them so I can get a feel for where they fit again. It's been a while!

With roughly 20 airframes a day for the IJNAF I'll just keep pace with the Allied naval fighters arriving, although matching Corsair quality is tough. I have to get settings just right in each situation to get near to 1:1 results.

I'm still flying the A6M5 and 5b and would really like to phase these out for training only, but it's a slow process. Dan pushes hard continually as if the Allied pools will never end. I'm thinking he's getting low, but I've been thinking that for a good while now. I am at least seeing day after day of smaller sweeps flying in groups of 8-12, so it is probably now a reality that he can't fill some groups out with top notch airframes. The P-47N starts producing next month, but "only" at 100/month. I need to see if low CAP will still get decent results against that beast.

To add on to rear area defenses, training groups and for future low strikes and kami use, I've been producing a good number of FB airframes as well. The Nick and Randy are fine still as long as they're not isolated agains Allied sweeps.

I was wondering how much AA had you in place in the contested hex/location just west of Kushiro

When my troops were there I had a regiment with 18 x 75mm and radar, another unit with 12 x 75mm, a Base Force with 8 x 12cm DP and 16 x 8cm DP, and all of the embedded AA in the individual units, most of it MG.

Within a week all radars were destroyed and the entire Base Force was disabled, the dedicated AA units kept up some fight, but were about half disabled by the end.

All in all though it wasn't a disaster, as no units were lost completely apart from the original tank unit that entered the hex alone. Most of these will head one hex out of Bihoro now or to Asahikawa to repair, and the garrisons there and from a few other spots will head to Bohoro. I've got three separate Army HQs in Bihoro which are helping tremendously in terms of getting disabled devices back in action.

Feb 23, 1945

On the 23rd it's more of the same. The reinforcements begin to arrive ant Bihoro and the Allied bombardment there is very counter-productive for them, losing 13 vehicles. I've got a lot of arty in hex now and the forts are nicely protecting the troops from Allied strikes. Even the ones that got nailed in the clear are nearly to zero disruption and beginning to fill out. Feeling better about Hokkaido defenses all around after this and the decent land bombing accomplished the last few turns.

The situation is unchanged down South, the Allies continuing to stay offshore and not commit to a landing. Fine by me. I can wait.

Something seems to be happening at the outer Kuriles. The DS attacked the ships I'd sent out there to try and load CD guns, and sank them before the guns were on unfortunately. Some bombing strikes have also hit these bases, and Im wondering if Dan will clean up his LOC before moving on toward Honshu, Korea or another follow-on destination.

Naval strikes again hit unloading ships at Kushiro, and sweeps got to the CAP at Etorofu for about a 2.5:1 ratio, which is great.

It's really nice at this stage to results like this in ground attacks. He seems to have left the AA behind on his move to the clear, and isn't willing to throw a LR CAP over these troops just yet. I think I'll switch it up and hit the ones on the South coast next to Kushiro next. There are three units there including some paras, a Canadian brigade and 1st Regiment, which is a larger armoured unit.

Excellent results from air ground bombing;

You had no CAP over Bihoro at all;

That is about the same amount of AA that is at all bases on Hokkaido. Bihoro is now getting some more.

This is where excess AA goes at this point in the game. I can have troops disabled and still fight on. The industry is vital.

Here is the info screen. The Allies have picked up about 2k since the turn of the year. Mostly Kushiro's points and troop losses. The air war remains a dead heat.

How much AA did you have at Bihoro? Shooing away Allied bombing raids against clear terrain with no help from the air is Japanese wet dream at this point. Although heavy rain in the hex helped too.
Also wonder what kind of the supply usage it incurred, although that one is far harder to determine.

Great job over the last few days (especially getting through to his shipping), but also in general. Not much in terms of VP ratio shifting to he Allied.

IIRC, VP ratios were what Canoerebel looked at continuously in the final stage of his game against John III, it was like a mantra in his posts. So maybe this is a pawn on the psychological chessboard of the game? I mean, as you stated a while ago, Canoerebel seems to enjoy and consider this - i.e. the psychological - aspect...

Loving it. Keep up the good work.

I think some people overlook that fact that the Victory conditions are predicated upon a ratio, not the absolute number of points. As you engage in more and more 1:1 VP snarls in the air, the ratio is increasingly difficult for the Allies to start to overcome. At this point, the Allies need to gain another 46,671 VPs without the Japanese side gaining one in order to get to 1.5:1. And now they have 6 months to do so.

Obvert: 6 months ago (in game time) would have been late August 1944. What was your VP ratio / total points then? My guess is that it's either not budged (ratio-wise) or maybe even expanded a bit in your favor.

Excellent results from air ground bombing;
You had no CAP over Bihoro at all;

Correct. No need.

How much AA did you have at Bihoro? Shooing away Allied bombing raids against clear terrain with no help from the air is Japanese wet dream at this point. Although heavy rain in the hex helped too.
Also wonder what kind of the supply usage it incurred, although that one is far harder to determine.

A lot of DP guns at Bihoro plus the AA units that have now recovered a bit from their shellacking in the unfortified clear. Bihoro has forts 8, so it's something like a x3 terriain plus a bit more.

Here is the info screen. The Allies have picked up about 2k since the turn of the year. Mostly Kushiro's points and troop losses. The air war remains a dead heat.

I think he's made signifiant gains. This is the info screen from August 20. So at about 1.41 then in the Japanese favour. Now down to 1.16. Things can go a lot faster in 45 though.

Dan seems to treat any non-combat ship other than an APA as expendable, so he kind of just sailed them in hoping I wouldn't strike. Not much value, but I'll take it, especially with a few added troops.

I think it must weigh on him as the days go by that the VPs aren't moving so much. I'm trying to get in his head a bit, and keep things unpredictable, mainly. So when he expects a strike there is none, then suddenly there is the next time or between major moves.

Exactly so. Make 'em pay 'retail' every time.

I think many allied players, myself included, are guilty of this. However, any ship (xAK, xAP) with troops is not expendable.

There's a lot at stake VP-wise should Japan be pushed off Hokkaido. The base VP's aren't insignificant, nor are the army VP's (assuming units are eventually surrounded and die on the island). Now, more than ever, it's critical to stall the Allies on the ground. If they get a big breakthrough and cut off a lot of IJA units, the VP situation can start to snowball fast.
