Mop up of southern Sumatra continues; Oosthaven will be captured in a few days. Meanwhile, the 3 battalions of 124 Inf Rgt will capture Toboali, Billiton, and Ketapang within the next week (or less), before moving to Sumatra to defend at Oosthaven, Benkoelen, and Padang, relieving 5 Div units -

Dec 25, 1941

Bases captured today: Sandakan and Balabac

Bases assaulted today: Ketapang

Bases LOST today: Pucheng

I grabbed Pucheng several days ago because it was vacant; I guess he wanted it back, although it's not worth anything (ie. no resources).

The US naval forces operating in the Aleutians have largely retired; several bombardments have left the surface forces low on ammo, and the carrier(s) need to replenish sorties and torpedoes. Hopefully, I'll be able to get plentiful supply into Adak in their absence.

Dec 26, 1941

Bases captured today: Lingayen, Ketapang, and Iba (RES 20(0))

Bases LOST today: Ichang.

The "gamble" of shock attacking around Clark Field paid off, as 2 of the 3 attacks forced the surrender of the defenders (4 Tank Rgt moved into the Clark Field hex, eliminating the ability of Allied units to retreat into that hex) -

And, the Chinese attacked at Ichang after the Japanese withdrawal, capturing the base. The sole Chinese corps on the east side of the river across from Ichang is now surrounded and will be destroyed. If the Chinese attack across the river they may be successful, but I'm not sure if they know that. We shall see.

Meanwhile, 4 Tank Rgt at Clark Field, having accomplished its mission, will conduct a hasty skedaddle back to Cabanatuan. Unfortunately, the unit's fatigue is too high to do it in one day, so an Allied attack at Clark may cause some pain.

Dec 27, 1941

Bases captured today: Oosthaven and Wuchow (RES 60(0), LI 60(0))

Bases assaulted today: Madang, Jolo, and Toboali

The Allies did not attack the withdrawing 4 Tank Rgt at Clark Field; it would have been smashed, so I moved it in combat mode which allowed it to move only 22 miles. Another shock attack at Manila was unsuccessful (success would have destroyed the Allied units there), so 4 Tank will continue to withdraw, and Manila will be bombarded until Clark can be occupied by 38 Div and 65 Bde from Subic Bay and Lingayen, respectively. A regiment of 1 Div is enroute from Shanghai to join the recon and engineer elements already on Luzon.

In China, a Chinese corps and headquarters crossed the river FROM Ichang opening a retreat route for the beaten down corps surrounded east of the river. This movement would likely have precipitated a shock attack had not the Japanese attacked first -

Defending units:
55th Chinese Corps (0 AV)

The Chinese horde at Ichang is still showing movement across the river. If it comes piecemeal the Japanese might defend successfully, for a day or so. If they come enmasse, the Japanese will be forced to retreat. In any event, it appears the Chinese may be able to establish a beachhead east of Ichang, which could put the Japanese defense of Hankow and Sinyang in peril.

Bases captured today: Malaybalay, Cagayan, Temuloh, and Billiton (RES 20(0))

The Chinese evacuated Sinyang as a Japanese division enters Nanyang to the north, which sits astride the main supply route to Sinyang.

This map shows the location and date of the US and Philippine units that have been forced to surrender due to having no retreat route. These surrenders will make it much easier for the Japanese to capture Clark Field (terrain x3) and Bataan. They should have all moved to Clark and entrenched, while supply is sucked into both Clark and Bataan. 85,000 supply was captured at Manila.

If he has no fighters on Luzon, bring on the Sonias and Idas! Break the air units into thirds and have them bomb around the clock in small packets for as many attacks as is possible to use up the supplies.

Nothing of significance happened.

In the map below I'm trying to show the movement (yellow lines) of the Japanese divisions in southern China, the major battles (yellow stars for Japanese victories and blue stars for Chinese counterattacks), and changes in the front from Dec 7 (red) to Dec 31 (blue).

The Japanese losses were mostly disablements and fatigue remains low, so the attacks will continue. Port damage at Wenchow is significant, so if we have to switch to bombardment for a few days, it won't be possible for the Chinese to re-entrench. An AKE at Taihoku is rearming the battleships, so they will participate again. (Of course, I could have sent them to Shanghai to rearm, but recent partisan damage has the port a mess!)

BB Arizona bombarded Dutch Harbor. Nagumo unleashed another carrier attack on Lae, sinking a PT in port and otherwise trashing the place.

With forts reduced at Clark Field, a shock attack was ordered -

Now to reduce the overstack! Tanks and 38 Div will retire to Lingayen; the tanks will be back; 38 Div will begin operations in Borneo to secure more oil. 4 Div and 16 Div, still at Manila, will move to Clark after 38 Div withdraws, then advance on Bataan. As elements of 1 Div are bought out from Manchukuo, they will assemble on Luzon making 3 full divisions available for the assault on Bataan. There is no hurry.

Movements in China for the first two days of January are shown in the map below. A meeting engagement has developed at Pucheng, where 22 Div and a Chinese corps have arrived simultaneously.

Changsha has been reinforced by the Chinese, with AV now over 2200, and they continue to bombard.

Bases captured today: Pucheng (or in this case, recaptured)

A sub was lost to mines in Cold Bay Harbor. I think he has an AKE there, because BB Arizona was back for another bombardment of Dutch Harbor. And the Brits bombarded Tavoy again, as well.

Japanese carriers hit Midway Island and a task force there, while passing by going to the North Pacific; heavy damage to 3 ships and moderate damage to Midway.

An attack at Wenchow dropped forts to zero -

With port damage at Wenchow still over 40, this force is ordered to bombard for a day (or 2) and repair disablements before attempting a shock attack.

The meeting engagement at Pucheng turned out to be a Chinese HQ against our 22 Div. You'll never guess who won!!
The HQ was brushed aside (and retreated west), and 22 Div will proceed SW to cut the final hex of the Chinese corps to the south.

A battle west of Chengchow resulted in heavy loss to the Chinese force which retreated west from clear terrain into rough -

Bases captured today: Butuan and Bacolod (RES 20(0))

Bases assaulted today: Talaud-eilanden

A cruiser TF bombarded Wenchow prior to a bombardment attack; neither did much damage, but we're ready for a BB bombardment preceding a shock attack tomorrow.

As Butuan was the only base on Mindanao held by the Allies, they have nowhere to retreat -

The Allies conducted deliberate attacks at Dutch Harbor and Changsha, both resulting in 1-to-2 odds; the Japanese had more losses at Dutch (and have limited supply) while the Chinese suffered more at Changsha.

Bases captured today: Saidor and Sampit

Bases assaulted today: None

Battleships bombarded Wenchow, artillery bombarded Wenchow, bombers bombarded Wenchow; and they'll do it again tomorrow.

Supply at Dutch Harbor is critical. The defenders were attacked today at 1-to-1. A battalion at Adak has loaded transports, but can't get there to reinforce in only one day. Supplies (though VERY limited) are being flown in from Amchitka. Carrier Division ONE is still several days away. If the 24 Rgt(+) can hang on one more day, the situation my be recoverable.

Out in the Aleutians, the Japanese force at Dutch Harbor is out of supply, and the US holds the base. Two Glen-subs are between Cold Bay and Dutch Harbor, and search shows no Allied naval forces in the area. (That doesn't mean they aren't there.) A battalion will attempt to reinforce tomorrow with an additional 1000 supplies on a PB. Carrier Division ONE (2 CV, 2 CVL) will speed to within 7 hexes of Dutch Harbor, while the battleship TF is left behind to refuel. If the reinforcement is successful, we will attempt to evacuate 2 Recon Rgt from Dutch Harbor so that it can be rebuilt.

Bases captured today: Tacloban, Baybay (RES 20(0)), and Catbalogen (RES 20(0))

The US subs suddenly have functioning torpedoes!! An empty xAP took 3 and sank at Dutch Harbor; an xAK loading at Umnak took some and also sank; another xAK at Umnak is heavily damaged and must unload before trying to move. CL Kitikami TF bombarded Dutch Harbor before retiring to Adak, and had 1 whole port hit! The Allied attack at Dutch Harbor was again unsuccessful, and more supply is being loaded elsewhere for Dutch. A BB TF is also headed that way. The carriers 7 hexes away did not attack and are getting short on fuel. A small AO is nearby to replenish, though it's unlikely they will be topped off. THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS ARE A LONG, LONG WAY FROM OMINATO!

Here's the last several days in southern China -

Jan 20, 1942 (continued)

Bases captured today: Tawau and Tandjoengselor

Bases assaulted today: Cebu and Gasmata

A Japanese cruiser TF met a TF of US PT boats at Milne Bay; both sides exchanged fire and retired with no hits.

BB Arizona bombarded Dutch Harbor, doing little damage. I had expected BBs Kongo and Haruna to be at Dutch Harbor today, but for some reason (refueling, even though I removed DDs light on fuel from the TF, or ice) they didn't get there (or even close). Tomorrow!

Meanwhile, the carriers bombed Dutch Harbor -

quote:

Afternoon Air attack on 2/250th Coastal Artillery Battalion, at 171,50 (Dutch Harbor)

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid detected at 95 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 40 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 8
B5N1 Kate x 14
B5N2 Kate x 34

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
45 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 9 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 5 (1 destroyed, 4 disabled)

I guess Vals don't fly in cold weather!

Other carriers attacked a TF at Port Moresby -

quote:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Port Moresby at 98,130

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 120 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 45 minutes

B5N2 Kate x 9
D3A1 Val x 9

Bases captured today: Gasmata

Bases assaulted today: Buna and Calapan

British light cruisers bombarded Tavoy again. Prince of Wales and Repulse have been hanging out around Moulmein; there could be an AKE there, but I doubt it.

Three of 5 Vindicators were shot down by CAP and flak over Dutch Harbor. That was followed by a carrier air attack on Cold Bay -

quote:

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 119 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 44 minutes

YP-251, Bomb hits 2, and is sunk

Later -

quote:

Allied Ships

The air losses are too high for this to continue.

At Port Moresby -

quote:

Bases captured today: Buna

The amphib TF escorted by BB Mutsu finally reached Dutch Harbor and unloaded an infantry battalion, an engineer regiment, and much needed supply. CA Tone, in the escorting heavy BB TF, took a torpedo.

A sub confirmed PoW was at Moulmein.

A Japanese cruiser TF, moving north to support the future landing at Port Blair, met a Brit amphib TF at Victoria Point -

quote:

Day Time Surface Combat, near Victoria Point at 51,66, Range 24,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CA Atago
CA Chokai
CA Suzuya
CA Kumano
DD Asashio
DD Oshio
DD Asagiri
DD Sagiri
DD Namikaze

Allied Ships
KV Thyme, Shell hits 10, and is sunk
PG Herald, Shell hits 8, and is sunk
xAP Glenapp, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk

Allied ground losses:
2552 casualties reported
Squads: 59 destroyed, 52 disabled
Non Combat: 96 destroyed, 22 disabled
Engineers: 3 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 17 (17 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 14 (14 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Had he attempted to land at Mergui (to flank Tavoy) instead of Victoria Point, he would have been successful. I can't tell from the casualties shown the size of the invasion force, but it seems to be larger than a battalion. Maybe I'll get some intel on that in the next email exchange of turns, lol. In the meantime, a Japanese battalion at Victoria Point is loading on transports for the invasion at Port Blair, while aviation support units are moving up from Alor Star already loaded.
