May 19, 1942 (part 1)

CVL Zuiho arrived at Singapore and will require 30 days in the shipyard for repair.

Carrier Division 2 (Hiryu, Soryu, Nagumo commanding) departed Soerabaja showing Ambon as the destination, but going to the Andaman Sea via waypoints, with a refueling stop at Singapore. CVL Junyo, now passing the NE corner of Borneo, will join in the vicinity Singapore. Carrier Division 3+ will depart tomorrow.

Repair of the oil facility at Miri has been stopped at 250 (of 300), temporarily.

Edit to add: (Part 2)

BB Yamato completed construction and is ready for sea trials at Hiroshima. A pair of destroyers have been dispatched from Tokyo to escort her to Singapore.

Umnak was reinforced by a US Tank Bn. I guess he's sending units to Umnak piecemeal because he has too few, and too small transports available. I would have expected a larger assault force on day 1. Whatever.

I've found that's the only way to play Japan to help foil Allied intel. After our carrier battle in the Banda Sea in early May he told me via email that he thought my carriers were at Truk! They WERE. And I got lucky having stopped 7 hexes from his carriers (by dumb luck); I could attack him, but he could counter only with unescorted SBDs. Scratch one flattop!

A 2 BB US TF again bombarded Adak -

quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Adak Island at 162,52

Allied Ships
BB Pennsylvania
BB Oklahoma

Japanese ground losses:
364 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 7 destroyed, 32 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Runway hits 1
Port hits 3
Port supply hits 1

A Japanese evacuation TF managed to get to Adak unmolested by these US battleships and load a fragment of a shipping engineer unit. How the TF got in I can't explain. Maybe the TF's didn't see each other at night? Why didn't the Japanese transports abort due to the combat ships in the area? Why didn't the battleships attack? Here's the situation at the end of the turn. The LCU fragment has been loaded -

And piecemeal reinforcement/resupply of the Allied force at Umnak continues with several TFs arriving today.

The Japanese force at Hengyang was reinforced across the river from the SW and East. I wasn't sure whether the cross river move would cause a shock attack so I set the force already at Hengyang to shock. It seems some of the river crossing units shock attacked, and others didn't. Anyway, the attack didn't go as well as I had hoped, probably due to the defensive forts starting off the battle at 3 -

quote:

Ground combat at Hengyang (80,53)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 51635 troops, 501 guns, 331 vehicles, Assault Value = 2617

Defending force 53966 troops, 282 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1331

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 2

Japanese adjusted assault: 997

Allied adjusted defense: 858

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 2

Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), experience(-)

Japanese ground losses:

Non Combat: 51 destroyed, 31 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 37 disabled
Guns lost 45 (6 destroyed, 39 disabled)
Vehicles lost 66 (57 destroyed, 9 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
2596 casualties reported
Squads: 35 destroyed, 184 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 33 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Guns lost 26 (1 destroyed, 25 disabled)

Assaulting units:
51st Recon Regiment destroyed

22nd Division
104th/A Division
60th Division
1st Ind.Inf.Group
70th Division

19th Ind.Mixed Brigade
104th/B Division
23rd Army
Botanko Hvy Gun Regiment
51st Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion
4th Mortar Battalion
2nd Hvy.Artillery Regiment
1st Hvy.Artillery Regiment

Defending units:

56th Chinese Corps
5th Chinese Cavalry Corps
79th Chinese Corps
99th Chinese Corps
3rd New Chinese Corps
65th Chinese Corps
28th New Chinese Division
10th Group Army

Even after these casualties, the Japanese AV is about 2:1 and disruption and fatigue are not bad, so a deliberate attack will follow.

In China, three tank regiments moved west after capturing Shaoyang. When the Chinese there withdrew west, the tanks moved to encircle the defenders at Hengyang. The tank regiments entered the hex west of Hengyang at the same time the Chinese from Hengyang moved into the hex, so NEITHER SIDE CONTROLS THE HEXSIDES (as seen on the map below) -

That hex has been reinforced by infantry and more tanks from Hengyang. Why the Chinese are trying to move SW is a mystery to me!

A6M5 research advanced from Aug to Jul '42; research will advance to June about the middle of June. There are 8 research sites; I expect to put at least 6 of them into production. The other 2 will research the A6M5c (with armor, due Oct '44); skipping the b model, which is only slight improvement on the basic A6M5. CVs Shokaku and Zuikaku are scheduled for upgrade in June; I intend to try to time the upgrade so that when they finish their fighters will be A6M5 !

With naval attack orders and a secondary mission to attack Rangoon airfield and port, the carriers decided instead to basically take the day off! This was the sole attack mission flown by carrier aircraft (Akagi, Hiryu, Soryu, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Shoho, and Junyo) -

quote:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Rangoon at 54,53

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

The Allies continued to bombard by air and sea Umnak and Ambon. Amchitka was bombarded by battleships for the first time, and Allied troops landed at Atka Is. in the Aleutians. Buna was bombed and strafed.

Sallies bombed Pegu at night, but did little damage.

Another day of the carriers not doing much, when much more was expected; could have been due to weather at sea.

A heavy cruiser TF lead by Adm Hirata attacked Allied shipping at Rangoon, sinking a PC and AM.

A Dutch CL TF bombarded Ambon.

A series of air attacks on Rangoon airfield did little damage; Betties from Victoria Point, then Sallies from Tavoy and Bangkok, then Helens from Bangkok. Carrier aircraft made a half hearted attack on a TF at Rangoon, getting one bomb hit, and even though the DL at Rangoon was 9/10, and a bunch of transports are visible in port, none were attacked!?

The Imperial Guard Div started unloading at Moulmein with escorting battleships; 56 Div is a few days down the road from Tavoy.

An attack west of Shaoyang should force a Chinese retreat tomorrow with the addition of a brigade of 3 Div -

quote:

Ground combat at 79,52 (near Shaoyang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 10358 troops, 91 guns, 71 vehicles, Assault Value = 410

Defending force 28444 troops, 200 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 172

Troops continued to unload at Moulmein (Japanese), Umnak, and Atka Is. (US).

A Japanese heavy cruiser TF bombarded Moulmein doing negligible damage. An Australian heavy cruiser TF bombarded Buna.

Nells, Betties, Sallies, and Helens bombed Moulmein doing little damage, but sustaining significant losses.

Both sides continued to unload troops at Moulmein, Umnak, and Atka Is.

BB Yamashiro TF bombarded Moulmein, doing negligible damage.

The CVs are returning to Singapore for refit, refuel, aircraft replenishment, and new orders. Except Kaga, recently repaired, departed Kobe, showing Singapore as its destination (ostensibly joining Kido Butai), but in fact, going to the Aleutian Islands via waypoints. Allied naval combatants there have been venturing farther and farther west, not under air cover, so we hope to pick some off.

In China, again no luck -

With an amphib TF enroute, Mataram flipped, so the TF will be diverted to Ruteng.

Allied transport unloading continued at Milne Bay, Umnak, and Atka Is.

US cruisers bombarded Ambon again; the damage was significant.

Somebody (it wasn't me) hit a mine (xAK Examiner at Port Moresby)!

An amphib TF delivering an SNLF unit to Lae took some hits from several Banshee flying out of Port Moresby and 2 sank. The TF should complete unloading tomorrow, but 2 other transports are on fire and will likely sink, too.

We attacked at Milne Bay, hoping for a good result before he can get fully reinforced (our forts are 3)-

Bases LOST today: Umnak and Atka Is.

Allied troops continued to unload at Milne Bay, Umnak, and Atka Is.

Nells bombed Chungking at night inflicting exactly zero damage. Wellingtons bombed Port Blair at night with the same result.

Four US battleships bombarded Atka Is.

A small supply/fuel TF reached Port Blair unmolested.

CL Emerald took 2 fish from a Japanese sub near Rangoon.

Banshees from Port Moresby again scored hits on our evacuation TF at Buna, but didn't sink anything new. The 2 transports burning from yesterday sank, however.

On the ground, 18 Div finally crossed the river east of Pegu completing it's weeks-long envelopment of Moulmein (18 Div departed Moulmein on Apr 13) -

Not a very good result, but good enough for the Allies to decide to leave - see the Jun 3 report below.

The Americans finally attacked at Umnak. The initial assault landing was on May 15 (after 3 Japanese units and part of 16 Rgt had been airlifted out), and after continuous aerial and naval bombardment and reinforcement -

Again, a fragment of this unit is elsewhere, so no PPs are required to rebuild it. The Allies approach to these 2 bases shows his extreme caution. Either or both could have been taken a week to 10 days ago, but I guess he didn't know that. Adak and Amchitka are next; maybe he'll throw caution to the wind and get cocky. Kaga is now lurking west of the Aleutian chain. Undetected.

A6M5 Zero research is at 97%. Research at Hamamatsu and Maebashi was changed to A6M5b, then A6M5c, each maintaining 30(0) status. Had these not been changed now, both would have gone into production tomorrow and a switch back to research would not have been possible. I know this because on Jun 3 five A6M5 planes were produced AND the A6M5 sites are NOT shown in blue.

CVs Shokaku and Zuikaku began their 20-day Jun upgrades at Singapore, with their A6M2 Zero fighters offloaded for upgrade to A6M5.

Bases assaulted today: Ruteng

Australian cruisers sank a supply PB at Buna, but the evacuation TF with part of 7 Tk Rgt escaped.

CL Dragon sucked up a sub torpedo near Moulmein.

The fragment of 1 Div at Rabaul was flown back into Milne Bay in preparation for a shock attack. But, the Allies loaded up their assault force there and left! I'm not sure if he did this or the local on the ground commander. They certainly loaded up quickly after unloading earlier in the day. Edit to add: Email intel tells me the local commander decided to skedaddle.

Tojos from Manus Is. flew LRCAP over Lae and downed 3 Warhawks with no loss. One of the Tojo pilots made ACE.

In far north China -

After some rest we may try some tank only attacks.

A word on logistics - transport stats during the month of May:

Resource from Hokkaido: moved 1,514,000 vs 1,050,000 excess, so finally getting into the initial backlog
Resource from China/Manchukuo/Korea: moved 741,000 vs 717,000 excess.
Resource from Toyohara/Shikuka: moved 279,000 vs. 294,000 produced (getting better with loading at Shikuka's larger port, but this backlog won't be reduced until Toyohara's port reaches level 4)

Resource to Home Islands: 2,812,000 delivered vs. 2,415,000 needed

Oil from Palembang: moved 118,000 vs. 120,000 excess
Fuel from Palembang: moved 163,000 vs. 202,000 produced

Bases captured today: Bima (vacant)

An Allied xAP was sunk at Baker Is. by a sub torpedo. Aircraft at Baker have been flying continuous recon of Tarawa and Makin. A sub torpedo also hit a British tanker near the southern tip of India. And while we're talking about subs - I-32 fired 6 torpedoes at CV Illustrious in the Bay of Bengal, but missed. And a sub discovered a minefield at Luganville the hard way.

Six Tojos flying LRCAP from Manus Is. downed 2 unescorted Banshees at Madang.

CV Kaga is now detected in the Aleutians.

Our first attack at Kweilin reduced forts at a high cost in disablements -

Aichi Ha-60 engines began production. Yesterday the 5(0) research site at Gifu was changed to 0(5) Ha-45 engines (in research, and expanded to 0(30)). Today the 40(0) production site at Kanasawa was changed to 0(40) production of Ha-33 engines. The third site was increased by 10, making 90 Ha-60 engines.

A few days ago 21 Div departed Shanghai by brigade in 3 task forces, all showing Adak as their destination, but in fact heading to SOPAC via waypoints with refueling at Truk.

Jun 7, 1942 (part 1)

CV Akagi and CVL Shoho departed Singapore showing Adak as their destination (to join CV Kaga), but first going to the eastern DEI via waypoints. BB Yamato and 2 other BBs (currently undetected) began moving from Ruteng to the vicinity of Ambon.

A Japanese sub put a torpedo in a tanker at Wallis Is. A Japanese sub put 2 torpedoes in a tanker east of Pearl Harbor.

CV Zuikaku's Zeroes upgraded to A6M5!

The first (of 5) Ki-61-Ia Tony research sites reached 30(0).

The airfield at Arorae reached level 1. This is an Allied base south of Tarawa and this is the first indication that it had been occupied. Wallis Is. is further south (and may also be occupied).

There were no ground attacks today while disablements at Moulmein and Kweilin are recovered.

A Japanese 2 battleship task force was detected by subs moving north from Singapore into the Andaman Sea; there goes surprise.

Nells bombed Chungking at night starting fires.

A Japanese sub sank an APD at Baker Is.

Kaga's Zeroes strafed Umnak from 9 hexes and downed 3 Kittyhawks for 1 lost. Vindicator's from Dutch Harbor attacked Kaga at 10 hexes, but scored no hits.

Ida production (32(0)) at Gifu was changed to 0(22) A6M2 Zero. It should probably have been A6M5, but I can live with this; it can be changed to A6M5 later for no loss in production. The A6M2 inventory is abysmal.

Jun 9, 1942

Shokaku's fighters upgraded to A6M5. There are still 15 days until the CV upgrades are completed, so plenty of time to fill out the squadron and accumulate additional inventory for squadron size change in July. More on that later.

The BB TF mentioned yesterday ran in at high speed toward Rangoon and sank a KV. There were several juicy TF's there yesterday, but only this one remained (probably ASW to keep subs out of Rangoon). It was attacked by Albacore at night, but suffered no damage (at least by the British aircraft; there was plenty of damage from the high speed run in and out).

Nicks flying LRCAP over our 18 Div east of Pegu downed 1 Hurricane and 4 Blenheim bombers.

A sub put 2 torpedoes in BB Nevada at Dutch Harbor .

The Japanese sub that hit a mine a Luganville some days ago sank returning to base.

Another attack at Kweilin reduced forts to 0 -

Ground combat at Kweilin (76,54)

Attacking force 62116 troops, 552 guns, 438 vehicles, Assault Value = 1806

Small transport craft managed to get into Adak while CV Kaga distracted the enemy on the 8th, loaded up several disabled aircraft on the 9th, and departed west. There was sufficient aviation support for the airplanes, but no supply.

Bases captured today: Kweilin (RES 27(13), LI 27(13))

Bases assaulted today: Waingapoe

One of our subs hit a mine at Dutch Harbor. Sallies bombed Chungking day and night starting some fires (and suffering no losses).

An over-stacked shock attack at Kweilin did the trick, but heavy losses on both sides -

Task Forces surprised today: British CVs Indomitable and Illustrious (details below)

Sallies switched their target from Chungking to Changteh, but again, night bombing caused no damage.

A Dutch sub put a torpedo into one of our big oilers near Phuket. It's only 1 hex from Langkawi, but likely won't make it!

Admiral Nagumo surprised the Brits in the Andaman Sea with carriers Hiryu, Soryu, and Junyo -

The British TF was in clear weather, but the Japanese carriers were NOT, AND THERE WAS NO BRITISH COUNTERSTRIKE !!

The Chinese decided to go on the offensive ON THE GROUND, but only one attack worked well for them. Just south of Sian -

Sallies bombed Changteh at night hitting nothing.

Akagi's Vals and Ryujo's Kates attacked a transport TF south of Timor, both unescorted, both getting one hit. The CV TF had Koepang as an alternate target, but probably due to a shortage of fighters this mission did not fly (for the second day).

In China, the Chinese "envelopment" from a few days ago was forced back, with heavy loss -

The carriers and battleships in the Andaman Sea regrouped yesterday, then moved to do some damage to the Brits today. A five BB TF moved to bombard Moulmein, and sank a PG on the way in -

I expected more damage from 5 battleships. The fact that British carrier aircraft were there indicates that one of the carriers hit 2 days ago may be in trouble (or worse).

At the same time, a heavy cruiser TF encountered British light cruisers at Rangoon -

Big screw up on my part (I have no idea what I was thinking, or even IF I was thinking) - while starting to load a unit at Ambon, with CVE Hosho in the TF, Ambon was attacked by a US heavy cruiser TF, and Hosho was sunk. The mistakes here are too numerous to count.

A very slow day!

US heavy cruisers bombarded Buna and were attacked by Nells and Betties from Rabaul, getting 1 hit. The cruisers remained at Buna.

That's it. No ground attacks other than artillery exchanges.

A brigade of 21 Div arrived at Madang; the other 2 brigades are at Rabaul and Hollandia.
