Hard Sarge -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (5/10/2008 4:11:31 PM)

Andrew B.W. Illius joined the Squadron on 8/22/43, KIA 8/24/43

they flew two missions

Also looks like

George Denwood DFC

SL George F. Grant DFC, DSO

FO William T. Timperley DFC

were also part of the Squadron, but did not fly on the raid

George Denwood was certainly with the Sqn late Jul43, no info on the other two with 156 Sqn.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (5/10/2008 5:10:18 PM)

I got both of the other two flying missions before the 17th and after the 17th with 156, so i think they are there at the start

bit of a hassle with the way they moved pilots around

some during the middle of there tour, others after the tour and rest and some right out of school

were also part of the Squadron, but did not fly on the raid

von Shagmeister -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (5/10/2008 5:33:36 PM)

Pilots with 156 Sqn should all be experienced as it was part of 8 Grp. I would of thought any pilots mentioned as coming from schools to this Sqn would be coming off a spell instructing or off a refresher course.

As for the RAF in general, some pilots moved Sqns regularly, not like the USAAF where a whole tour was normally with the same unit. Might have something to do with the frequency the RAF moved Sqns from sector to sector and wanting pilots in the first half of their tours to stay in front line sectors.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (5/10/2008 5:46:16 PM)

I seeing a number of Sgt and crew right from School, I thought the Pathfinders was a 2nd tour job

I am getting the background of a few of these guys, duty stations and such, and some of them are right from school, and as you say, others after the first tour go on to be teachers and then come back to active duty

In theory all pathfinders should have completed one tour though it practice it was quite common for crews well into their first tour to transfer to pathfinders.

I presume your getting the 156 Sqn data from http://www.156squadron.com/ and the info is taken straight from the ORB so it must be accurate (as written). The 156 Sqn data I posted above (in the personnel lists) was taken from the 156 Sqn ORB for 17Aug43 only. I haven't got round to checking the site for the raids a few days either side to complete the Sqn roster.

It's a pity there isn't a web site like 156 Sqn's for all units, it would make filling out the Sqns/units a lot easier.

Having not had a proper look at the site yet what are the schools mentioned that the replacement pilots come from?

Hard Sarge -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (5/11/2008 3:35:36 PM)

OTU, HTC ?

yea it is a great site, a lot of work into it

the mission rosters are the best

you can pick one pilot and then trace his history, keep getting side tracked :)

do you have a s number for him ? 126596 could of been tour expired and then went CC ???

Kewl found a pilot for 268 while looking around :)

von Shagmeister -> RE: 541 Sqn (7/6/2008 7:14:22 PM)

106 (PR) Wg (540 Sqn, 541 Sqn, 542 Sqn, 543 Sqn, 544 Sqn) was administered by Coastal Command (RAF Benson was a Coastal Command A/F, even though in the middle of the country). However 106 (PR) Wg carried out work for many external agencies and wasn't operationally sub-ordinate to CC. Most tour ex PR pilots went onto to serve with other CC units.

I think it's the same guy, there is a good chance the guy with 542 Sqn was Canadian (J10231?). What rank is Lawrence McMillan with 400 Sqn and what dates. Was he awarded the US AM.

von Shagmeister -> RE: 541 Sqn (7/6/2008 11:34:00 PM)

F/O Lawrence McMillan 542 Sqn was definitely Canadian, he was awarded the DFC.

Also

F/O Scott, D.G. 542 Sqn is Donald Gairn Scott

543 Sqn (as of 17Aug43), only ‘A’ Flt operational at St. Eval, Cornwall. Sqn was disbanded 18Oct43 so probably not worth adding to OoB.

Varangian -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (11/11/2008 9:39:09 PM)

Hi again,

I almost forgot the most important entry for me, my colleage's father,

F/L Sandgren, H. (Harry) W. (DFC)

Thanks

Barry

von Shagmeister -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (11/11/2008 9:49:58 PM)

Hi Barry,

Which one is your colleagues father. Do you have a full name.

First 24 took part in the raid, were the last 2 pilots who didn't take part in the 17-18Aug43 Peenemünde but were on sqn strength on this date?

Best Regards

von Shagmeister -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (11/11/2008 9:51:43 PM)

Beat me to it.

Varangian -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (11/11/2008 10:44:15 PM)

Hi,

The info I have lists the first 24 as taking part in the the Peenemunde raid (A/C "A" to "Z") with F/O Unwin listed in the same plane as F/S Nicholls and Sgt Payne is listed in the same plane as Sgt Ward. I wasn't sure how to interpret this so I listed them separately to make pilot inclusion in the game simpler. F/L Sandgren is not listed in the operation program for the Peenemunde raid but I know he was in 158 squadron (where he won his DFC Oct 4, 1943) and it would be great to see him listed in the game.

Thanks,

von Shagmeister -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (11/12/2008 8:51:36 AM)

Thanks for the clarification.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Real Life Pilots For Inclusion (11/12/2008 1:41:11 PM)

for what it is worth, I already had Harry in there :)

will add his W. (that I didn't have)

and will look over the rest of the list
