The refs in this tournament are giving too many red cards. Ronney actions was not worth a send off.

you are kidding, right? Stupid Rooney deserves what he got - kicking an opponent without ball is always red card...

It was a 100% clear red card, he did not get it for the kick in the nuts (I think that was not really intentional) but for pushing Ronaldo away. That was very dumb of Rooney. He is very young, I guess he could not take the heat in that situation. I'm pretty sure the ref combined the kick and the push. Without the push it would have been only a freekick.

Pushing, beating, kicking, whatever a player of the other team after the referee stopped the game is a red card, the ref has no choice there.

England did put up a great fight after Rooney was sent of but failed to score one of their many chances. Penalty shootout is England nightmare and they know it [;)]

I hope it makes the brazil loonies think about the way the "played" football this tournament. You know, it is a team sport and one where you should move on the field too. Brazil defeated themselves.

3 brazilians defending against 6 french players when Zidane was free kicking to Henry. Do they really expect they can not get punished for that cause they are Brazil [&:][:-]

Man,

England lost to a bunch of women, they are not footballers but actors. God I hope that Germany and Portugal end up in the final and I will be cheering for the Germans. (at least they play real football) Good luck Marc!

The only good player for Portugal is the goalkeeper. JHFC if they win the world cup....

Shaun

GO GERMANY!

Thanks, I just hope the Italians are not diving their way into the finals like they did in every game now .....

Portugal is no match for France.

Well...IMHO it was a deliberate stomp on the cruets and the ref saw it. The push didn't help either.

Still, at least in Rooney the English team has someone who looks like their fans. You know a fat-headed, beady-eyed, white-trash thug. He's got the kicking in the nuts thing down too. Of course for the authentic England supporter look, he would also have to parade a pasty, morbidly-obese bare torso around while drunkenly insulting pretty much everyone for "looking foreign" but I'm sure he'll pick that up in retirement. [:'(]

It's a good thing they stopped those 3000 English hooligans from travelling or they might have ended up with a bad element in Germany. [:D]

Only joking. Still, what's with the Crusader getup? It's got to be anti-Muslim beneath a veneer of sports-patriotism.

Cheers, Neilster

Man a good gust of wind and teams like Portugal and Brazil go down! Its sad and a pathetic show and NOT football! Every world cup we have it. But good ole FIFA says its ok and will not go to TV replays for difficult calls etc like many other sports. Man can you imagine how many dives would show up via replays...

Rooney did deserve the red card, but Portugal did not deserve to win. Seeing a player look around and get up when he notices no one is watching him is unreal! Sadly for most latin teams its all TOO real! Catholic God? lmao .. I am sure he is VERY proud!

This is in contrast to all the "great" looking people in Tasmania I take it? Hmm.... West Virginia and the Fens of Norfolk come to mind here, I know what Australians say about Tasmania <G>

greetings.... i understand your frustration, but i'm not responsible for english players lack of courage! Portugal deserves to get through 100% - i'm sorry but if someone saves three penalties than....

I'm against TV replays - it will ruin the game (anyway, FIFA and big FC clubs already ruin this game). Why big FC clubs? Instead of accusing latin teams[;)] you should accuse Chelsea, Manchester, Real, Milan etc, etc... these clubs aren't interested in nothing than profit. Buy players, who need "local boys" in our club. Buy even models (Beckham), doesn't matter if he know to play the game - he will attract money to our club - he is famous (buying T-shirts, etc, etc). Football have almost nothing with sport anymore, guys who earns a millions euros per season can't run because they are exausted (Brasil) and arrogant (Brasil again) - just because the reasons i've explained above....

Referees arent problem - money is the problem...

Speedysteve -> RE: 2006 World Soccer Championships in Germany (7/2/2006 7:29:13 PM)

I'm still disappointed with the England results.

They have been very poor this tournament and I personalyl believe it is down to Sven. Useless piece of ****

End of the day when we were 11 vs 11 in the 1st half we did not play better than them.

There is NO doubt in my mind that the Portugeuse performance was very poor professionally and also personally. Ronaldo is *%&*%*^*%*%^* Almost everyone I have spoken to since over here feels the same. He's in for a HARD time in the English Premiership next season I tell you...........Wouldn't surprise me if Rooney kicks ten tonnes out of him in training.

Marc von Martial -> RE: 2006 World Soccer Championships in Germany (7/2/2006 9:20:56 PM)

Prior to the to be expected "diving" festival the Italian media is now starting a targeted campaign against our best player Thorsten Frings. According to TV footage revealed by "La Repubblica"  he was hitting an Argetinian player at the head.

Funny is that FIFA has mentioned this morning that there is no evidence at all that any german players / officials were either provoking or actively acting in the little riot after the game. Even the argentinian team has not mentioned any active german players.

That's Italy for you. Come let's handle this on the lawn you pathetic sissies [:@][:@][:@]

[:D] [:D]

I always sympathize the English though (+ Italians) because most other people hate those teams and I find them fun to watch both when they win and when they lose as well. I mean this:

and this....

is just priceless [:D] [:D] [:D] Look at the moron's face! My god this card is RED! LOL [:D]

There is just one reason why I wouldn't want Germans to win, and that's because they are tournament hosts. They have enough advantages being hosts already. Other than that I love their OKH football, always did.

BTW if god is catholic, or even christian, why did the French, pardon, West Africa United team go through? [:D]

The thing with Ronney the man was battle for balance while having another player's leg around his foot, yes it was definetly worth a yellow but not a red card.

oi_you_nutter -> RE: 2006 World Soccer Championships in Germany (7/3/2006 12:47:06 AM)

Rooney might of got away with a yellow, but he did push and shrove after the incident

although the idea of a tv referee would help to get more consistent and accurate decision during the game, especially when the viewing public has a better view than the referee or linesman, it could slow the game down a lot. the referees are in two-way communication so why can't a 4th ref invoke a "wait a mo, let us review the tv coverage before you rule" when the decison really needs a thorough review. when you have a late game penalty or a red card incident it should be a correct decision not just because one player pleads or act more than another.

perhaps an after-game review of important matches could award extra or even withdraw yellow/red cards for bad decisons. it doesnt correct the results of a match but blatant diving or playacting should be punished.

As if the italian press has not better things to write about. How about their enormous referee and betting scandal in which half of the team is more or less involved. No, how dare we ;) Juventus Turin is still champion of their league, even with supposedly over 20 games where the referees got a little hint about who to favor in the game ;)

I heard that FIFA is looking in to option for another referee that is only ment to look for dives and such things.

That's because they're ignorant of what Tassie is actually like. Granted, you get some odd looking people in the country areas where there may have been a bit of cousin fancyin' in the past but I live in the cosmopolitan capital, Hobart. My suburb of Sandy Bay has a casino, The University of Tasmania and several exclusive all-girl private schools. It's an absolute babe-fest.

When getting the usual anti-Tasmanian flak in the Air force, I would simply reply that I was taller, better looking, tougher, more intelligent and cooler than he who was attempting to disparage Taswegians. On one of these occasions, another guy admitted that all the Tasmanian girls he knew in the RAAF were either attractive or completely hot.

Here's one of our more famous exports, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. She's from down the road in Taroona. Let's not forget Errol Flynn was from Hobart as well. Apparently he went alright with the fairer sex. [:'(]

It will be interesting to see how the disciplined, Deutsch automatons fare against the Italian Dramatic Academy. Of course it should be Australia that the footybots inevitably defeat. [:'(]

Neilster -> RE: 2006 World Soccer Championships in Germany (7/3/2006 1:59:17 PM)

A TV referee has proved it's worth in cricket and both forms of rugby but IMHO only when its use is tightly controlled. Otherwise, yes, it can slow the game down too much.

In a game where the referee has such incredible power to affect the outcome, my guess is that it would be valuable in football. I like the human element in sport but these days there are such enormous sums bet on games and players' financial futures can be radically affected by bad decisions.

Cheers, Neilster

Maybe you read only what you want to read of newspapers (or, more probably, German press says only what it want German people to know)... Italy didn't asked FIFA to sanction Frings... FIFA is investigating the fact on his own, and on his own will take a decision...

Also, Juve (and Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio) cheating in Italy doesn't mean anything in the WC contest... Many Italian teams (like Inter) were cheated and are full of honest players and people... A very similar thing happen in Germany last year... that didn't mean all Germans are thief...

Frings IS suspended because he was the one that started the fight against Argentina at the end of the match. He did punched Julio Cruz. 2 match suspension, the semi-final and another match in a 6 months interval.

Frings started the fight, Jesus were did you get that piece of nonsense? Cruz himself said he did not get punched by Frings. The fight was started by Argentinian player kicking Mertesacker in the legs and nuts. Frings got a kick and two punches, before "he got actively involved" to quote the FIFA report.

In fact I'm reading italian newspapers / online news pages in this event too. I am half italian.

Okay let me get more precise, the italian media. Not the italian football team.

The referee scandal that happend last year in Germany is a completly different thing. The was a betting scandal led by the (croatian IIRC) sports bet mafia, not teams buying referees to favor them. The DFB acted immediatly, unlike the italian football association, which is waiting for the Championships to be over so non of the players get distracted [8|]. Do you really think Juventus will be sent to the second division? If that happens I will tip my hat to the italian jurisdiction.

If the italian media wanted to do a favor to their team, well they didn't. The whistle concert for the italian team tommorow in Dortmund will be deafening.
