I'm back, Raver is still as cocky as ever, and WITP is a very different game to the one we started while still beta testing.

Raver is still too chicken to try being the red team, so I'll assume the burden, and he'll take his slapping for the first 18 months of the war before he gets to do any (when he does, he'll do the usual frightened Allied player tactic of sailing around with the Uber Death Star). Once again I will spread the peace and love of the IJ Empire across the Pacific, using group hugs, high fives, pats on the back, thoughtful counselling and Haiku. My officers will spend a lot of time talking about their emotions, and about their favourite colours (the colour discussion will be short - their favourite colour is the same as mine or they'll face the firing squad - red).

I also hope to activate the top secret easter egg code that got implemented during the top secret Gamma testing. That's right - assign the right leaders to each unit on the OOB in ascending order of their height - and fight like this for 2 years - and Japan gets 10 free nukes and a pair of Stealth Bombers in '44. [X(]

House Rules:
1. Jap player gets a free punch on turn 1 - complete surprise all throughout the theatre. Raver gets to move his CVs, order his Chinese armies around, that is it for turn 1. He gets to give orders turn 2.
2. I will not port attack anywhere except PH on turn 1. After that, if there is anybody dumb enough to be parked at Manila or Singapore, I'm squashing them. Don't care how realistic or not this might be.
3. No 4 engined bombers under 6000ft. Not that Raver ever does this anyway.
4. If I intend to attack Russia, i need to pre-activate them 2 weeks prior.
5. PDU is on, and we won't restrict it. Neither of us will abuse it to the point of being gamey, but is too useful to do without.


I'm still building the first turn (taking a very long time - I'm going to make this one perfect - production wise as well as combat wise) but I thought I'd start the AAR off with a few general thoughts and ideas on how I'm going to proceed. I'll start with strategic stuff, so as not to give away my top secret plan (we're going to declare war on the US on December 7th!!!!).

Production:
Using a different strategy this time - economise rather than expand.
In other games I've grown the economy to a monster that is never satisfied, never running at 100% and never providing everything I need. This time around I'm halting a lot of aircraft production to take advantage of auto factory upgrades - I'm halting a lot of aircraft production just because I don't seem myself using those aircraft types very much at all. I will restart them if I need them.

I am expanding smaller factories (anything under 10 gets expanded to 10) which will give me a marginal boost to my total economy, but a massive boost to its efficiency (smaller factories work more often due to availablility of smaller amounts of HI points etc.

I am setting up massive training facilities for the pilots of the aircraft types I'm not going to use very much of (those Nate pilots are going to be dangerous if they ever get into an Oscar down the line).

Engines is pretty straight forward - we all do the same here.

Direction:
I'm loving Pzb's crazy Indian invasion, and I've often wanted to do something just like it - but large scale insanity is Raver's forte. I'm hoping to expand the SRA a bit further than is traditional, say, but I don't intend to invade India en masse. December will be about Shock and Awe. Shock is at how rude this AAR will probably get when I spank Raver across the SRA, and Awe will be the part where you see Raver on the news theatening to throw himself off . . . well off some tall building in Melbourne (I'm assuming they've managed to build some tall ones) because I'm not playing nice. [:D]

Quite right about Raver's attitude -- and it doesn't seem to be supported by actual AAR victories.

Hmmm. Why shouldn't the Brits get to issue orders on the first turn? British intelligence was aware of the sailing of the troop convoys headed for Malaya.

Ah, ok, will flick Raver email for 10k house rule thing.  He probably won't mind as it probably won't make a difference to him.

In one UV game he was sending his 4 Engines in at 30k because my fighters couldn't get that high and neither could my flak.  He continued this for months - essentially milk run training for his pilots.  My worst allied LBA nightmare would be some cowboy taking my B17s in at 1000ft over a nest of flak guns. 

We are playing stock - since I wasn't aware there were alternatives?

Capt Harlock - In hindsight every one of the allies knew they were getting declared on, but the surprise factor was still there on December 7th, so China and the US CVs only.

With less experienced opponents, they will pack the west coast transports full of supply, fuel and troops on turn 1 and send them at full speed westward across the map to guard the US-Oz supply line (places like Pearl, Canton Is, Palmyra & Suva etc).  The experienced Jap player is always ready and waiting right on "time" for those predicable moves to show up.  They almost always work against newbs, but Raver has NEVER made that mistake.  He has been known to leave those transports on the west coast until turn 5 when he gets some extra planes etc. etc, or send them in smaller convoys, rather than the uber supply convoy thing.

Raver will post in this thread but at the moment he is visiting our nation's capitol (he didn't say why - could be he got carried away with the whole coast guard thing and sank a ship full of Kiwi refugee immegrants making for Bondi or Manly - court martial or commendation?).

Surely someone has an AAR where they've bombed NZ??

You really should use Nik's mod. It is far superior to stock. But beware the evil changes he made to things. Allied flak is brutal............even at game start.

Too late, I've spent far too much time on this turn 1 to do it again.  This time, it is perfect.  OR ELSE! [:@][:@]

I have been too careful, too meticulous to have anything go wrong on turn 1/2.  The whole point of the house rules about turn 1 (Raver enters no orders except to his CVs and maybe china, I promise not to port attack anything except PH) is to give the Jap player total utter and absolute surprise.  I will be annoyed and irritated if my staff and field officers don't take absolute full advantage as aggressively as possible.

This turn 1 should be the aggressive opening turn that all other "razzle dazzle" Jap players measure themselves by.  I've planned every operation out several turns in advance, I have a spreadsheet of all my invasions, the forces involved, the times they should arrive, the makeup of those all important invasion forces, and which of those invaded bases will become my airfield Hubs in the SRA.

I've exploited every single bit of info I already know about the game, Raver's starting OOB, my starting OOB, everything.  Douglas Raver Arthuer-MacArthur (yes, that is a Hey Dad! joke.  Showing my age) won't know what hit him.  Anybody out there planning to take on Raver - learn this if nothing else: don't give that wiley bastard an inch.  Any missed opportunity will hurt in the long run [:(]

So, I've fired off the perfect turn 1, Raver will get it when he gets back from his audience with the PM and he'll move his CVs (because I know where they start! [:D] - I can't help it) and away we go.  There is always that urge to forget PH and go for his CVs . . . They're seperate, weak, and going to end up heading South or West to evade me (sometimes north too - never east).  That is a tiny bit on the gamey side - I don't mind sending my surface forces out to slam Raver's turn 1 ships where I know they are (e.g. Bunch of AKs in port at naga asking to be hit, Houston is at Cebu or somewhere like that etc. etc.). 

It is possible that Jap intelligence would even extend to letting my staff figure out where Raver's existing TFs in confined waters are - informants etc. etc.  But apart from knowing that the CVs aren't at Pearl, it just isn't plausible that I could know where to find them lost in the Pacific as they were.

Allied CVs on turn 1 = off limits.  Everything else is completely fair game.

I have divided my opening move up into 3 seperate (but not seperate) operations.

1. Operation Aspiration.
This is basically a land grab.  I intend to take everything within reach on turn 1 as fast as possible.  Since Raver isn't entering any orders on turn 1 (and he's seen my opening move a few times now!) I'm happy to post the details uncensored.

Invasion points in the SRA (some of which will become Air Hubs) include (but are not limited to!):
Brunei,
Miri,
Jesselton,
Tay Tay,
Jolo,
Menado,
Puerto Princessa,
Legaspi,
Khota Bharu,
Tarakan,
Sandakan,
Kuching,
Zamboanga,
Lamon Bay,
Kendari,
Aparri,
Vigan,
Laong,
San Jose,
Roxas,
Bataan Is.,
Ormoc,
Cagayan,
Davao,

Cagayan, Legaspi, Davao and Kendari are the obvious moves - controlling the SRA airspace by Turn 3 is the plan.  Taking Lamon bay has obvious advantages, and Miri and Brunei are also pretty obvious choices for the Jap invader.  I expect this part of the turn to go flawlessly.

Operation Expectation
Smashing Pearl Harbour with my patented Pearl combination of airstrikes to get the most from by free punch at Raver's BBs. 
The best PH results aren't the ones where the BBs sink - sure that is nice for points and all - but the best ones are where you cripple most or all of them, and they have to spend months and months and months tying up repair and refit yards.  I also prefer a broader spread of targets (any subs or AVs, ARs, DDs that get hit at Pearl are just as good as the big boys).  The trick is to have enough fuel and airpower left with KB to then go allied CV hunting.

Raver has been known to drive his CV's West to a: head off a possible Wake Invasion, b: try and sink my replenishment tankers on the way past (just like I can't help knowing where his CV's start, he can't help knowing what area this TF is likely to be in on turn 2) and c: escape KB by then running North (usually) or south (bloody Raver has done this to me before as well).  I'm going to guess a direction he's going to retire his CVs in, and we'll see how I go on turn 3.

I will expect good to awesome results in this part of the plan, since I've done it a lot of times before.

Operation Deviation
This one is a new facet to my opening plan - I can't honestly say if it will even happen, and if it does whether or not I will come out a winner or a loser.

Lots of Allied players just curl up into a ball and wait for 1943 to arrive - especially when it comes to the RN.  To be honest, I prefer this, as it means my control of the SLOCs is uncontested within the SRA for that all important first month.  Raver doesn't do this - he likes to contest everything, attrite everywhere and snipe at the edges constantly - but he has always pulled PoW and Repulse out of Singapore on Turn 2 and sent them into the Bay of Bengal and safety.

The purpose of Operation Deviation is to FORCE Raver to use PoW & Repulse early on in the SRA where I can sink them.  Preferably before they join up with Warspite and the other RN units from Colombo.  Stay tuned - this will be awesome if it works (and possibly controvsersial - not as bad as PzB invading India though [:D])

PI Operations for Turn 1. As you can see, even though no one has ever heard of Lamon Bay, if I'm quick, and Raver isn't, I can cut those pesky allied divisions at Naga off from Manila. Without supply, they surrender quickly - makes Manila fall all the faster.

Borneo Turn 1 - as before, each orange arrow represents an invasion TF. No airstrikes here to speak of.
At this point I'll land at Tarakan and march overland to Samarinda and Balikpapan - too many transports in those restricted waters would be too hard to protect from Raver's subs and light (fast) surface forces.

I've learnt that often enough. By turn two, when he gets a chance to order those surface forces around the map, I'll have given him a new problem to deal with ;)

By the start of 1944 eh? I may be rusty at this game, but I'm fairly certain this means Raver will have his head in the sand waiting for his death star to show up.

Someone (not me) should write a scenario where it is June 1942, no CV battles have been fought, the Jap player owns the SRA and the Solomons and Burma and Wake etc.

Then each side would get 5 or 6 non combat turns to reposition CVs, troops, supplies etc before "war" is declared.

I'm not the man for the job however!

I've seen this comment in a number of Japanese strategy discussions, but I don't quite get it. In all my games, I run a substantial surplus of HI (furthest game is 3/44) - plenty that all of my factories "fire" each turn. Does everyone else run their HI that close to 0? And even if you do, you don't get more total production because if your small factory "fires" when a larger one wouldn't, you use the HI on that day and don't have it the next. Maybe if you run near 0 HI you often get a plane a day early or something, but that doesn't seem all that exciting to me.

Am I missing something?

Back to the drawing board.  It is kinda sad to see what is left of my WITP skills so pathetic.

Turn 1 was a disaster.  I was unlucky, several times, but more importantly a lot of invasions stalled, and the combat results were bad.

When I watched the report, I said:

Operation Deviation - a massive, massive massive failure of huge proportions.  Not only did the every allied bomber in the SRA fly, they actually hit some stuff, following by some abysmal surface contacts.  I can understand the TF lead by Kono getting into trouble since it started with a destroyer with two torps in it, but Hoso-thingamy and Saka-whats-his-face did extremely poorly when they had all the advantages.  Hoso-thingamy is going to get executed for how **** he performed.  Only Tanaka delivered the goods out of all the tfs (and there were a lot more than you see on the combat report) in this operation.

Adm Hoso-whats-his-name leads a light cruiser and some of the IJN's finest destroyers in a daytime combat, where he surprised the allied naval force, launched a long lance attack (from about 45 kilometres) and got his ass whooped when he outnumbered the allies 13 to 1!  4 Sunk destroyers, and the rest running from the lone CL like girls.  The shame.  The horror! Raver has wet himself laughing - hysteria so bad he might have a heart attack and die (which would perhaps give me a fighting chance at winning the game).  I'm in trouble.

The wake invasion goes extremely well - I capture the airfield with no damage to it, and have 70+ aviation support points immediately on shore.  I've loaded a lot of search planes, torpedo planes and fighters here in case Raver's CVs decided to flee west.  If they did, they are trapped between KB and this rather ****ly target! Raver isn't that dumb though.  If his CVs were heading towards wake, he watch the combat replay, saw the base forces when Wake fell and steered his CVs someplace else.
