Launched in 1918 and comissioned in 1922 HMAS Adelaide is an old ship so I was not really surprised to see such poor results. Better is the news that I am sinking a lot of Luskan's DDs. If anything the IJN never has enough DD's so the more that I can sink the more it will hamper the bananana boy later in the war. Rabal is a legend in-the-making, to hold out as long as they have is an amazing feat of arms. There will be some VCs awarded in the near future. Luskan must still be living back in the UV days if he thought that hitting Midway would tempt me to use my CVs[sm=crazy.gif]. Although it would have been a pain to loose it Midway is not THAT important at this point of the war that I would go rushing in to defend it. 3 out of 4 allied opponents who see a chance to "escape" with their CVs and schmack a jap invasion tf at the same time will take it. Of course, there is a side show benefit of taking Midway - but only if I could do it and not have to guard the place constantly from allied pounding.

Another turn from Raver sails in and the war continues! A few "big things" happen today - first off, Kuching and Cebu both fall, with allied troops marching into captivity in their thousands. Iliolo will fall next, with Rabaul (no actoin there today) and you'll see the brave troops that have participated in these amphibious operations get 3 whole days of rest, before they load up and storm another allied beach in the SRA (there sure are a lot of them!). The PI is now mostly red instead of green - excepting Luzon of course, where I haven't made much good progress yet. Raver's nuisance force arrives just north of Bangkok - they'll be thrown back in good measure. In China, my torops stormed Changsha - not much ot it since Raver had left only the most token of defence forces back there [:@][:@] As long as his chinese LCU's remain "unrouted" in battle, they're semi - effective. If he saves too many of them from my early game meat grinder . . . well he won't have to wait until 1944 for the chinese offensive. That said, looks like he's shoring up a bit of an defence at Wuchow/Kweilin. I have a different plan for this part of the Chinese fight this time around. Off Pearl Raver's ASW groups continue their success - sinking the I-9 this turn (but not before the skipper torpedoed a DMS). I'm thrilled to see some of my subs hitting targets - just wish they survived a bit longer. First sub sunk outright this game however. In the Solomons my little invasions continue - I am starting to run out of little units to guard all these islands - will be a few days before my reinforcements (shipped from Japan on turn 1) get there with the troop numbers and volume of supplies I need to create my Solomon island fortresses. Raver's bombers have picked up the pace - starting to hit transports regularly. The good news is the early allied aircraft carry small bombs - and my oscars and zeros on CAP over my invasion tfs are scoring good kills. The bad news is that one of these bastards put a bomb through the Hosho's flight deck which really smacked her something nasty. Fortunately the need for my escort CVs to function as a mini KB task force off Kuching is no longer necessary (since I've got 100+ aircraft at Kuching to do the job for me!). That siad, I'll be making sure as few of these bomber units escape the SRA (thanks to Raver's political point bottleneck) as possible. In news just as disturbing as the lack of defenders at Changsha, my troops bombarded Alor Star today (my main force is starting to move down the Malayan peninsula) and found they place almost empty as well. I haven't seen Raver evacuating LCUs from Malaya - so I'm guessing he's setting up Fortress Singapore - any escaping transports would have been spotted (I hope) as they fled. Enjoy. Oh it was soooooo good to see a bomb go through the deck of that jap flat top. Pity it didn't do any real damage. The boy wonder failed to clear his subs from around PH as fast as he said he would and my ASW TF struck a number of times sinking one and damaging another No moves on Java yet and only a slow push south down the Malay peninsula, however looks like Luskan is making a move for Rangoon....I expect him to be there in the next four to five game days maybe even 7 at the lastest. The battle continues on to day 10 - I grind Rabaul further down, chase some retreating allied troops down the road from Tarakan to Samarinda, retake Krung Thep (raver's nuisance raid), take Vigan, bombard Tuguegarao (waiting for more troops to roll up before I storm the forts) and finish off Iliolo and over 6000 allied troops go into custody. Ten days in and I have two fears - firstly that Raver has managed to pull LCUs (especially the dangerous australian ones) out of Malaya. He's certainly not bothered at Tavoy and it looks like he's retreated back to Rangoon - but there are troops missing. I hope to find them down the road at mandalay or further into the jungle. I certainly don't want them to survive my early advantage (although if I know Raver, he's piling troops into Akyab left right and centre - the allied player can get enough troops in there to stem a japanese Indian offensive and launch a counter attack from within their own air cover - I won't be making that mistake again, although I've found a better way to handle it). Secondly, Raver's being completely un bull headed with his chinese troops. So far none of them have charged forward in stupid attacks where they are easily routed. Once routed, due to the constant lack of supply and HQ chinese troops STAY routed - and the best way to control China is to rout all those troops at the start of the game (just look at what a rout did an the IJ division next to Hanoi! Will be weeks before they're ready to fight again!). Raver, unusually, is being careful and conservative. Operation Elation was given a green light today - several months earlier than I'd expected to need to. Elation will take some weeks to ready as well, and when it comes off (if it works) I will be able to hear Raver's teeth gnashing from here (and if it doesn't work I'll have to bomb melbourne). While I've still approved it, I think it will need to be put back a bit - the timing isn't so critical that a month or two will hurt. Also forgot to mention that I've spent some time trawling through my reinforcement calendar - glad I did because "extremely" variable reinforcement isn't joking. There is stuff coming in all over the place that isn't close to historical (or usual). Some good, some bad, but I'll be adjusting some of my murkier plans to suit.

Not much of an issue for Japan as airgroups are filled out from pool anyway, but can be frustrating for allies when you are counting down to the arrival of your 72 P47s, and they show up as P39s instead. GRRRRR!! And of course with the low replacement rate of some aircraft it will take months (or years) to get those pilots back in their P47s. Certainly nice to bring some variables to the game though. Maybe we should suggest that the availability date of aircraft should also be variable? would add another dimension of unknown.

In short - lots of crippled jap ships sank, and I took Gasmata, hopefully cutting off the defenders retreat from Rabaul - wore Rabaul down to fort level 0 - I expect it to fall next turn. Not any more. They're running for their lives - and I captured a load of supplies that will get my troops back into fighting shape very quickly. The forces at Rabaul are now (finally) getting reinforcements fresh from Japan with enough grunt to secure the solomons, and within two weeks I'll have enough firepower on hand to think about how to take PM. My troops land at Balikpapan and Macassar to complete the conquest of the bottom half of Borneo - I am starting to run into a whole bunch of small units that are basically exhausted from landing at empty beaches, claiming them, moving on, fighting in one or two places, moving on etc. My armed forces can't keep up this kind of pace much longer - I need at least another week or so out of them to finish off the southern bases on Borneo, Macassar and a few more choice locations in the lower DEI and Northern shore of PM. Once those objectives are met, I'm cycling the newer, smaller (but fresher) units from Japan in to act as garrisons (to construct my fortresses) while my exhausted combat troops get some R & R in exotic locations, like Kendari, Tarakan, Davao, Borneo and Kuching (places with strong air cover, lots of supplies and more on the way). While they're having their week off, my two giant hammers on Malaya and Luzon will inch closer to their objectives. I would guess there will then be a week of reorganising my shipping into a more coherent structure (damaged ships left right and centre, I've had to operate 3 invasion tfs unescorted for the last few days because there aren't enough escort ships on that side of the theatre etc) for my follow up moves. Again I'll mention that I haven't seen Raver evacuate any LCUs from the SRA. IF this is true, then I'm stoked, as I've trapped them now (airpower is in place to intercept any shipping - you'll also see some better use of Jap level bombers to hit troops and airfields fairly soon). I never pull troops out of the SRA so no suprises there.........Bananana boy is taking his time in the PI, but then he has no reason to rush. The big question is if the boy-blunder intends to go into India? Seems to be the going trend amongst the JFB club members. [8\|]

This turn i continue to unload at Macassar (and test the water there with a bombardment) and at Balikpapan. I grab Georgetown and a whole bunch of allies surrender - i also nab some of Raver's Blenhiem night ops birds (big deal) on the ground. I still have not encountered any serious allied LCU units in malaya. I've also noticed that in spite of a great number of targets, Raver's level bombers in the SRA have eased off. It may be because I've shot a few down and he's turned off replacements, it might be that my fighters are discouraging them from attacking. It might even be because Raver is evacuating those bomber units as fast as he can get PP points to get them out (most of them go to Australia's northern coastline no doubt - along with whatever extra base forces he can scrounge - probably more than a few bombers slipping off to India too). He might just be getting low on supply in the SRA (although considering the mountains of supply I've caputured at places like Kuching, Rabaul, Tarakan etc. I'm not sure this is true). All is possible, but the most likely reason is the float planes. Those little dutch float planes (and the USAFFE Catalinas) are the units that Raver cares about. He doesn't care about crappy martin bombers (not even sure what they upgrade to or when). Raver is a 4 engine bomber kinda guy. But to try and seal off the SRA and halt the advance, he needs to SEE everything going on - that means saving the float planes. I haven't captured any on the ground (shallows) where they traditionally begin the game (e.g. Menado, Kendari, Tarakan etc). it may be he redoployed them away from my advancing troops within the same theatre . . . but I'd bet those dutch planes are forming an overlapping series of circles that starts at Perth and follows the Oz coast north, then across PNG somewhere (PM & GG) then Noumea, and up hte chain to pearl and Midway. He doesn't have that many float planes yet (too many subs around Pearl for him to yank all the cats out just yet - but these are one of the first things ole Raver will look up on his reinforcement list!) but when he does he'll be forming the world's thickest Air search screen. My reasoning is simple. Raver will get lots of nice bombers later on - he doesn't care which ones he looses in the SRA (he'll save the B17s for India however). He gets some float planes later on, but without float planes (with long range) now, he can't see me coming. Think back to our UV days when Raver was young and trusted his air search boys to cover the whole of their search circles? Well he learnt the lesson about not trusting just 1 or two squadrons of search planes at any given venue back then. He won't have unlearnt it in WITP, where it is just as vital to find my CVs. So Raver ambushes me with CL Adelaide at Gili Gili, and it goes poorly, so what does he do?? He sends her closer to the action - to Woodlark of all places!! [8\|] Her crew and captain are convinced that Raver has either a: gone nuts, or b: has his eye on the captain's woman and wants him out of the way. This is compounded when IJN float planes spot Adelaide at Woodlark. And then spot her in the same spot two days later. Raver has sent them orders "WAIT HERE!". Easy Daytime surface combat, Adm. Yamata said it was excellent practise. By the way - that long post I just put up about Raver's lack of air activity - turned out to be bollocks. Got stung this turn. The Australian government is not doubt demanding (quietly - Curtain wasn't the most forceful bloke) an explanation from Raver. Hey Raver, want to post a picture of another of your ships [:D]?? Exciting turn this one. Lots of action and Raver starts to counter punch a little. First off, I invade Vella Lavella, which will complete my conquest of the Solomons completely. There are one or two bases around the Admiralty Islands and on the tip of New England to snap up (as well as northern PNG but I'll get to that later) but otherwise it is all mine. Construction has begun on some of my fortresses here, and if you haven't guessed - that very long invasion at Rabaul had some CV support (note - SOME. As soon as Raver's Avengers arrive, then I need to start travelling in numbers, but for now, my fleet CVs are in three divisions - all within a couple of days of each other just in case. All out of sight for now. For those that didn't catch that, 20th December and Solomons are all mine. I haven't invaded Noumea or Luganville (or Fiji!). Then the battle at Kuantan hots up - with Haruna and Kongo slipping in to bombard the place, just as the triumphant IJA division from Khota Bharu arrives to watch the fireworks. They hang around and blast the allies again after lunch - but in the meantime, Raver's shorter legged planes out of Singapore launch, land a couple of ineffectual bomb hits on the Haruna and then stick a torpedo into her! Surprisingly little sys damage for such a big fire. She'll make it, but I'm not happy. Then the allied troops at Kuantan (half of them having run all the way from khota Bharu) try a counter attack. My boys are so surprised it almost works. Almost. I'll clean Kuantan up next turn or the turn after - my nothern Malayan sledge hammer is slow but definite (and i've got plans to cut Kuantan off - truth be told Raver probably doesn't have to order his troops at Kuantan out for another week and he'd still beat my encirclement, but still). I take Macassar, more allied captives, no planes on the ground. Or in the water next to the ground. Completes my conquest of that southern PI Island (now renamed Luskan's Island Hideaway #4), and of that island Davao is on (late, mental block, Melbourne cup was over celebrated, can't be assed looking it up, hoping my turns tonight weren't sh1te). In the sub war, my sub off pearl slams ANOTHER DD (that DMS from last turn - is now a reef [:D]) and gets damaged for it - I've lot a lot of hurt subs, and Raver's subs tee off for the second time in the game (the first being when that bastard in the S-Boat STARTED WORLD WAR 2 BY FIRING AT ME BEFORE PEARL HARBOUR) and puts a torp through one of my tankers (and a lot of shells). She was alone due to a massive screw up in escorts I mentioned before. I've more or less solved the escort problem, but that tanker won't be leaving the dry dock any time soon. Operation Elation is running on time so far - nothing but prep work happening at this point. Luskan hit the nail right on the head (damn his black heart) when he says that I am saving my float planes. These aircraft or vital to the allied war effort....it is more important that I can see where Luskan is than having the planes to hit him. Having said that he is wrong about my Dutch bombers......they are resting ready for the next attack by the bananana boy which will come soon. I would think that the boy blunder will not hit Java until he has all of Borneo and possibly Singapore under his control, so I have one maybe two weeks breathing space. It would be interesting to post a "losses so far". Think that I'll do that as soon as I get home tonight. I am sure that I have scored some good hits on a number of banana boy's ships. I know that I have hurt his DD fleet (always a good thing) but it is his transports that I am most interested in. Bananana boy is setting himself up to make a move on Noumea and possibly NZ in an effort to block the SLOC between Oz and the US, to counter this I have moved so troops units into that area (spent PPs that could be better used elsewhere to do so ) and while I have no illusions about holding him back I DO intend to give him a very very bloody nose. The current rate of bananana boys' advance now places me in a tough quandary.........to (try) and hold PM or simply let it slide. To reinforce the place I will have to spend a lot of PPs to ship troops from Oz, I would think that by the end of Jan'42 I could have one Bde and one Div of Aussie troops there, but with the allied farces being so weak at this point of the war there is little that I could do to stop IJN Bombardment runs ( and having seeen this happen before it would not take much to shut down the place). But the thought of simply letting the boy blunder waltz in there makes my blood boil. ( and no it is NOT the time or place to use my CVs). sigh my heart say to fight but my head says to run.
