You poor Europeans get so little vacation time....not!! [:D] I get four weeks and that is because I've been with my company for 11 years. Most of my co-workers get only two weeks (two weeks for less than 5 years, three weeks for over 5 to 10 years). The job to have in USA to get lots of time off is being a teacher. I should have become a school guidance counselor vs an in home family counselor for teenagers and their families. [8|]

Well, the job to have here is a teacher too! That's how I get the three and a half months off a year. [&o]

Working in a private american international school is even better than most. Also, there is a lot of travel associated with the job if you don't mind chaperoning fifteen teenagers through European cities. This autumn though I'm doing a quieter trip up to Scotland. That'll be nice.

As a coach of both baseball and basketball I've also traveled and played in schools all over from Egypt to Romania to Germany. Been to Paris about 10 times in 7 years, and most of the coaches complain about having to go to Brussels, again! Been there about 15 times. I love it though.

There is still time. Schools look for experience generally, not just particular school experience. Especially international schools.

Well, for this trip I'll be hanging out in the country near Loch Ness with students in a writing workshop. There will be some good whiskey around, but I can't go nuts on that while taking care of the kids! [:-]

Maybe a sip or two. [:)]

Just sent a turn to nick after a few crisis days with friends. A marriage on the rocks. Not easy times.

Tomorrow I'll be able to get an update done. Sorry for the radio silence.

July 15 - 17, 1942

SUBS: A few misses from Dutch subs in the area near Burma. Japanese subs continue to scout and spot units moving in the Central Pacific. No sign of KB movement yet.

INDIA: On the 15th I sent a massive strike of Blenheims to hit Warrangal, but the japanese have significant AA assets there and the effect is minimal. No opposition from the air though as they choose to stay in Hyderabad at 0 hex range CAP.

On the 16th the same 180+ bombers hit Bellary with better results and few losses to AA. I'll keep hitting the undefended bases occasionally. It's not yet time to challenge the 200+ CAP at Hyderabad.

Also on the 16th paras take Raipur. This is a precarious position and I'll most likely get bombed heavily here. Some LR CAP is in place, but I don't have spare AA to move in just yet.

Pacific: A bunch of units are on small TFs moving into the Central Pacific. They'l land at five bases over the next few days. This is the first big push here and hopefully it's quick enough the KB can't get in fast enough to nail them if it's still nearby.

CHINA: At Kweilin the Japanese tried a DA as the Chinese troops move into the woods. it didn't go well for them, with almost 400 squads disabled. I'll now try to use this opportunity to get the units out while he's recovering here.

It looks like the dream of cutting behind the tanks is unworkable near the mountains. I simply now have to wait for his reinforcements to make this a really difficult area. Our forces outnumber his 1500 AV to 400 AV but I don't feel able to strike knowing how Chinese units don't deal well with armor. There are 100+ AT guns in hex though, plus another 36 x 75mm independent units. I though about bring in 2E wellingtons and Marauders for one big strike and a DA no the tanks, but that is quite risky.

OZ: More support units are now moving into the New Hebrides. Luganville is just reaching a level 2 field and Bolos will so be brought in to hit the small Japanese unit at Ndeni.

SIGINT: He's very serious out here. This base also just went to level 4 fields!

13th Air Flotilla is located at Diego Garcia(11,62).

Well done in China.

How much does losing Diego, and knowing what he has there, effect you?

My plan currently is to let him build and add resources to Diego. Then I'd like to invade behind and isolate it so that the investment there is lost. Once Ceylon is taken back Diego is useless.

I can also much earlier look into taking back Male and Addu. Neither seems to have a big commitment based on the SIGINT I've received so far.

July 18 - 20, 1942

SUBS: Not having much luck with the subs that should be hitting lately. Trusty whiffs twice in the same turn against a big TF near Bassein. Then S-42 sends four fish at CV Junyo near Ocean Island and misses. [:@]

The O-24 gets a shot at the retreating KB TF near Ocean Island as well.

INDIA: Tried another bombardment at Hyderabad. Not going to work there without other help. I'm not going to run through more commonwealth squads, but I do have some ideas about how to force a move here.

Pacific: The KB ambushes several TFs landing troops and supplies in the Gilberts. Fortunately I staggered most of them. The losses are difficult but no single unit was entirely lost, so with the supplies dropped these can recover in the bases here, requiring no new TFs to be sent for a while.

The bad news is that a few important ships were lost. In total the major losses will most likely be 4 xAP, 1 APD, 1 DMS and 2 xAKL (27 knot Banana boats). Sad about the quick APD/xAKL losses, but they fulfilled the mission and got troops in place, and I do have a good number of APDs left. Only one remaining fast xAKL. Luckily I kept the cruisers back out of range.

I had thought the next day the KB would come forward and continue the hunt, but it looks like S-42 might have sent a shiver down Nick's spine even with it's missed chance, and the KB turned back toward the Solomons. All ships in the area scattered and all those en route to Luganville and small islands nearby were sent back to Noumea. I'll now send subs forward into the retreat path and send out limited transports right back into the areas in danger. Knowing the vector he must flank across and that due to fuel that may not be possible again immediately, this is a very short window of opportunity.

CHINA: Two big DAs at Kweillin nearly take the base with what would have been horrendous losses, but the troops held with 1:1 both days and by the 20th the Japanese could only manage a bombardment there. The Chinese forces, though worn and with many disabled, will make the freedom of the yellow road and will prepare to a blockade on the fore side of the river in the x3 rough. This is a big hold.

Near Chikhiang the dug in troops there hold well with a 1:3 result against the forces that have been bombarding there for well over a month. The IJA takes around 4x the damage of the Chinese. Looking solid as long as the supply holds. i need time for some reserve troops to recover more squads, then I'll have an entire extra army to use on the front lines here.

Remember that the Allies have a wide variety of subs. Many have low speed like the S-boats at 14 knots and the British are not much faster. You got spoiled with Japanese subs doing 21 knots and hitting their targets. [;)]

Well, in this case four fish gives a pretty decent chance! [:)]

Yes, I know they do get into better attack positions with a higher chance to hit, but there have been way too many misses lately from working torpedoes. Not complaining, just frustrated.

Still, they're doing a good job, and force Japan to consider them. That is still a great asset.

Gotta find the lemonade in the sub misses: every missed attack is still an experience gain for captain and crew. Soon they will be much better at hitting.

July 21-22, 1942

SUBS: Sargo peppered xAKL Miyako Maru near Geraldton, mostly with 20mm guns, and I have no idea if any real damage was done the the enemy ship.

INDIA: The progress here has slowed as recon studies the rear f the Japanese positions and new weak points are identified. Hyderabad continues to be a stand off, but that is fine. Once stage two there begins the base will likely become untenable without ever having to tackle the large CAP.

In the North several new para units have arrived along with some tanks and engineers. These will be essential to the next risky stage of the push toward Calcutta. Patna has 120 fighters and around 28k troops. As this base is in the clear I will attempt to hit it eventually but timing is crucial. He's left Raipur alone lately, after a CAP of 50 fighters has moved in, so that base is no building a bigger airfield and increasing forts.

Pacific: After the KB hit a few days ago small TFs are now unloading again in the Gilberts and surrounding areas. The Elice Islands are being used as a forward fuel and supply dump area and the ports will be built on the two islands that can build them. No air cover means that it's dicey here, but far enough back that hopefully I'll have a day's warning if anything is coming.

This operation is going well and although it's slow, this is much farther than I'd imagined I'd be in summer of 42, with three functional airbases in the Gilberts and almost all of the islands occupied and fortified.

CHINA: Some massive concentrated airstrikes in China. Other than that, just the bombardments continuing as usual. It looks like some units may be moving away from the Sian area. I'm thinking he may not strike here now, but just focus all around to the Southern areas that have achieved some progress.

At last a few minutes to sit down with the game this weekend! We've still been getting one and some days two turns done, but this week has been crazy at work and the next few will be even more difficult for game time. My presence here will be limited to say the least. All for good reasons, though. [:)]

On Sept 6th I marry Rachel, my partner of 4+ years here in London. Since almost all of the planning (AE logistical training coming in handy) is finished, we are now starting to enjoy and look forward to the several days of celebration with friends and family.

So just wanted to give a heads up that my updates will be sporadic over the next few weeks.

One of the things I love about the venue for our wedding, The Foundling Museum, is that there are old paintings all over the walls. Not just any old paintings though. Because many children who were raised in Coram's Foundling Hospital and Orphanage went on to serve in the military, especially the RN, there are nautical paintings all over the place. This one will be just to our side as we say our vows! [&o]

You couldn't talk her into wedding under the 15" guns at the Imperial War Museum!!!??

One of the things I love about the venue for our wedding, The Foundling Museum, is that there are old paintings all over the walls. Not just any old paintings though. Because many children who were raised in Coram's Foundling Hospital and Orphanage went on to serve in the military, especially the RN, there are nautical paintings all over the place. This one will be just to our side as we say our vows! [&o]

Congratulations! Who is going to read the Articles of War?

You just reminded me that I worked with a guy who would say "Time to call the War Department!" [:D]

Ha! A bit uncertain for weather this time of year so we opted for an indoor venue. [;)]

Thanks for all of the support guys! It's a big day for sure.

I'm also heading to a friend's wedding in Greece over the weekend this week, so lots of coupling going on. Busy days!

Congratulations Erik! I wish you both all the happiness in the world. Not knowing anything about Rachel, I can only say she's got herself a good man.

Best wishes for stress free nuptials and a wonderful day with family and friends.

My wife is sitting on the couch typing away, the laundry is going around in the dryer, I'm still in my gym shorts and tee shirt and I've just gotten the third turn today loading from Nick. Ahh, married life! [:D]

Not so different than before really, but it feels different, in a good way. All went well. The bride showed up, we said the right things, none of the family got in fights, and we all drank a lot of champagne!! [:)]

So, tomorrow I hope to get some updates done. We've played a few turns here and I've started to figure out what I'm doing again after a few weeks off. Feels good to get back in the saddle.

Well, the after action report won't be written for certain specific campaigns! [:D]
