July 23 - 27, 1942

Looks like I'm more behind than I realized here. I'll do some brief reports and try to get caught up.

SUBS: Some I-boats are hanging around the Northern New Hebrides and up to the area around Ndeni. A few attacks and two xAP lost, but after dropping the troops.

INDIA: Building fields here as troops get ready for the next push forward. The Allahabad/Benares area will be the main bombing base complex for the next stage. More US bomber groups are still arriving in India, and soon I'll be able to use two different air fleets on separate sides of the sub-continent.

Pacific: The bases in the Gilberts continue to solidify. Tabiteuaea now has an airbase and I'll begin building a port. The Ellice Islands have started developing into forward staging areas for supplies and units, and a Marine Defense force is on the way in.

A frogmen of an infantry regiment will land on Ndeni in the hope of taking the base soon.

CHINA: Lots of bombing continuing against both troops and fields. Supply is getting scarce.

On the 26th I moved some Lightnings into Chungking and LR CAPed Chikhiang. Managed to shoot down around 20+ Sallys, which was nice, but it didn't really slow the bombing after a one day layoff.

The Japanese attacked south of Chikhiang, but only got a 1:6 result, and lost a good number of squads disabled to almost none for the Chinese. [:)]

obvert -> RE: ::Felix, Ferdinand and FRUPAC:: obvert (A) v Greyjoy (J) (9/12/2014 1:36:28 PM)

July 29 - August 2, 1942

SUBS: Another xAK lost near Luganville. I've moved in some Bolos to try to keep the subs down at least.

INDIA: On July 30 Nick tests the defenses over Gorakhpur with a few sweeps. The A6M3 come in first and don't do so well. The Martlet and P-40E CAP at 20k gets a 2:1 against them, maybe even more once ops are taken into account. Thinking that this is one of the big expert groups, this is a great result. Maybe he's switched out one pilots? The Tojos come next though and mop up. Only a few lost to ops while the take out 8-10 of the defenders. Oscars came through after and found nothing still up. Nick comments these results worry him, but since they worry me too, it's all about even! [;)]

I'm still a few weeks from serious counters in the air. I've got to get some more bombers up to speed and the groups enlarged on August 1st, of course diluting the pilot pool. I'l knot be able to sweep the big bases, but I can work around the edges a bit hopefully.

Pacific: Sent in a bombardment at Tarawa. Nothing major, just wanted to see if it had an effect and what was there. Just a Naval Guard unit present currently.

Namumea was taken by a small Aussie independent company. These little units are really useful for the way I like to play. Experienced, easily transported, easily flown, expendable.

CHINA: Netties begin strat bombing in China. Could spell trouble. Fires get started at Chengtu resulting in a few factories lost. Wenchow is also begin hit. The P-38s linger and take out another 7-10 IJAAF 2E bombers on the 1st.

For the 31st we came out just about even, so I guess this is good for the Allies. Especially since it's over our base. A lot of Japanese pilots lost there.

Skyros -> RE: ::Felix, Ferdinand and FRUPAC:: obvert (A) v Greyjoy (J) (9/12/2014 6:46:28 PM)

I thought this chart on Monsoon Affects and Supply Caps might be useful since it impacts Northern Australia along with China, Burma and India. It is based on the stock game, but I think it is the same in the DBB.

witpqs -> RE: ::Felix, Ferdinand and FRUPAC:: obvert (A) v Greyjoy (J) (9/12/2014 8:48:06 PM)

"Monsoon" does not affect all bases with a supply cap, only those that also have the monsoon effects checked off in the scenario file.

obvert -> RE: ::Felix, Ferdinand and FRUPAC:: obvert (A) v Greyjoy (J) (9/12/2014 11:40:08 PM)

I've never seen that chart! Thanks!

That would be the ME in the last column for Monsoon Effect.

August 3 - 6, 1942

SUBS: Silversides runs into what looks to be a replenishment TF for the KB near Kusaie Island. Sure enough, an element of the KB is sighted near Kweijalen the next day. It didn't strike, but Cats have been moved to Johnston Island and Midway to check for any raiding going on further toward the West Coast.

A massive convoy looking like it's carrying significant troops is attacking by the Greenling near Tandjoengbalai. I couldn't see the TF during the turn to find out which direction it's going. Is it more troops for India? [:)]

INDIA: Nothing happening here now except shifting air units to newly built up forward bases. Allahabad will reach level 8 within the next week or so.

Pacific: Ndeni falls to our small force. I'll fly in some engineers once the remnants of the Japanese unit are cleared away. I have some small xAKL that will try to move in with supply now that I can supply a bit of air cover from Vanua Lava.

CHINA: Near Chikhiang the IJA tries a DA on the 3rd and gets a 1:2. This is significantly better than the 1:6 last time. The air forces are taking a toll on our troops, and in spite of the level 3 forts in x3 terrain, it's a tough hold now. The next DA on the 5th did only get a 1:3, but it's time to replace some of these worn down troops before a total collapse.

I'm moving in another small 180AV Corps that is well rested, and I'll then start switching out the two big depleted Corps for fresh. If I can make this work without losing the hex it could buy another few months here. I need to make every day count until I can reconquer NE India up to Ledo.

Tabieuaea is nearly finished with its airfield. Other bases nearby are moving to level 2-3. I'm only moving supply via subs and troops with small TFs now. Not much to catch here, and mines and PTs are installed and being increased. So far so good.

Can you really rotate anything out from that hex without it being absolutely pummeled by the arty? Even in combat move anything trying to get out was as good as dead by the time it got out of the hex.

ny59giants -> RE: ::Felix, Ferdinand and FRUPAC:: obvert (A) v Greyjoy (J) (9/13/2014 12:15:01 PM)

Naval Search - I would take some time during an upcoming turn to review your PBY and Catalina placement. Use the "Z" key to show any search arcs so you can find gaps. Its easy to think a single PBY group on a base like Johnson Island is enough when right now having two there would protect your northern flank in the Gilberts. I bet Jocke wished he had been more thoughtful in his PBY placement vs Mr Kane. [;)] To supplement these groups, I train up some of the early war Wirraway groups that stay for the whole war in ASW and then Naval Search to be used around Australia. These upgrade to the LR version Hudsons.

That's it exactly! I use it all the time. Both moving in and out, and sometimes just to rest a unit in the hex for a few turns. It helps here that it's a good road, so only a few turns in and out. I sometimes just use combat moving for two turns, then reserve for the last and get them out in three days.

One little thing about Reserve Mode. Sometimes, the unit will still be bombed from the air and suffer disruption, even if other units are present in the hex. It seems it just depends on which unit gets targeted by the air targeting routines...

It might be that the unit this has happened to me with was targeted first before I put it into reserve mode. Bombings have kept up without any days of rest, so they just never stopped targeting that LCU? I don't know.

I don't use arcs often, as I find search works better set to random.

There isn't much to catch between Pearl and the line islands as most is coming direct from the WC now, so it would be tough to pass through to a further area. I have several more PBY groups in the area though. One on Baker Island, one on Onotoa, and one in the Ellice Islands. Down at Fiji I have the LR Hudsons, some Cats and Hudsons in the New Hebrides, and more Hudons along the Oz coastline. Been training search first for all Aussie bomber units. [:)]

There are a lot of subs transiting the PH Gilbert route too, so those should help to pick something up in the area.

Thunderstorms in the hex severely reduced bombing effectiveness, and there was no CAP. It seems he's still sticking to a 0 hex CAP at Hyderabad. The other strike went to

Pacific: Nothing major happening and no response to the Ndeni grab.

CHINA: The IJA keeps trying near Chikhiang, this time a Shock attack that achieved only a 1:2. A good number of vehicles were disabled, and a few squads and vehicles destroyed. The switch out of troops is nearly complete. Having one unit moving in reserve mode probably was one of the reasons the Japanese didn't take more destroyed and disabled squads from this unsuccessful SA.

The Lightnings continue to be pesky and rack up kills, knocking down 3 Sonia.

SIGINT: Only a few minor SIGINT reports of interest lately. A division moving to Bataan. Seems like consolidation and defense of the inner Empire might be starting.

11/1st Division is loaded on xAK Kiso Maru moving to Bataan.

Here is a plan for the next stage in India. The most risky op yet. I'll try to paradrop three bases and then fill in by flying support to the two with airfields, and railing in to all three. No major units will be used, so if this fails miserably losses will be kept to a minimum. This will happen in conjunction with another op on the other side of India threatening to encircle Hyderabad.

Ranchi (size 3) and Patna (size 4) must be dealt with as part of this op, but I'm still working out the best way to make it happen. Patna has about 180 fighters right now, so no easy task.

What Tom did whenever I tried to rotate something out was to set every bomber in range to ground attack that hex. Even in x3 terrain I would take 300-800 losses per turn. After doing that for 2-3 days he would launch a deliberate attack before the beaten up LCU got out and the fresh one got in.

Worked very well for him! [X(]

Nick is actually doing pretty much the same thing! He hasn't stopped bombing the 78,51 hex for weeks, and when there is an attack or he sees something moving the frequency goes up. I've only been able to slow that with the P-38s showing up occasionally.

Because 3 of the 4 units have level 3 forts the bombings don't seem to hurt much here in terms of disabled squads. It's 5-10 a day, but they seem to recover close to that as well.

He'll break through eventually I'm sure, and he's already making inroads in the mountains, by moving more units down the long road where the armor is entrenched. The longer I can last in the hex's in from of he river in the center, the more difficult it'll be to pull the trigger on a river tossing later, I'm thinking.

I think a lot of players miss that every one of those river valley hexes from Cawnpore to Calcutta is a major road hex. This is a big advantage for the Allies due to strategic road bonus. Another reason I like to see the Japanese player commit to fighting in India.

You know, I am reading both AARs and now think I should have not mentioned it as it might be construed as giving you an unfair advantage. I honestly don't know if GJ is aware of this (although he should be[;)]). Please send him a PM and let him know that I mentioned this and it is only fair that he knows as well. Sorry for saying too much but I think it is OK if both of you are aware of it.

Will do. Doesn't seem like an advantage though as it's really just stuff in the game that we easily could look up in the manual. You're just giving me a timely reminder, but unless I can get the air war under control it's not going to make a lot of difference anyway.

I'm sure there are things I'm not aware of that are posted in his AAR from time to time too! [:)]

August 10 - 12, 1942

Some context before the fireworks begin.

SUBS: The intrepid I-18 tries and attack at Luganville and eats a mine for its trouble. More on the way to Ndeni where a number of subs have been hanging out. The USS Keokuk is coming in handy down here.

INDIA: Preparing some things. More should be happening within the week here.

Pacific: Supply and base building is going well in the Pacific. No sign of the KB or anything else moving around right now.

I've been slowly installing Canadian and small US troops on the bases in the Aleutians just in case Nick tries anything before the winter up here so there are no easy grabs. Each base is built to 3 forts and has a field now. Adak and Dutch are up to 6 forts and each has CD guns and arty to make any real landing tough and bloody.

CHINA: The IJA tries yet another DA near Chikhiang, this time getting a 1:5 and taking lots of disabled and even some destroyed squads. Happily the transfer of troops went well and a fresh 350AV unit is installed and rushing to dig in.

The P-38s also hit some IJN 2Es bombing, destroying 8-10 planes for no losses. I'll now fly them back to India to make sure the low supply in China doesn't get them stuck here. I also need them to sweep soon if I wan tot start moving forward there again.

SIGINT: A few more divisions moving around within the Empire.

8/48th Division is loaded on xAK Okiyu Maru moving to Singapore.
7/1st Division is loaded on a Husimi Cargo class xAK moving to Bataan.

August 13 - 14, 1942

INDIA: Nick goes for the CAP at Sholapur on the 13th. This prompts all kinds of action. His Tojos do okay, but are not as dominant as I'd feared. The CAP loses about 21 planes to a reported 16 Tojos downed. I'll take that over my own base.

Because I knew the Tojo groups would either be reduced and weakened, or even replaced in the Cap over Hyderabad, I decided it was time to try out a direct strike. I knew this could fail miserably, but at some point I have to try things here. I set all planes from Bombay to strike, and put up a lot of LR CAP and sweeps, but didn't use any escorts. This is a method I've not used a lot so I wanted to see how it would work, and I've now learned some things.

The CAP was indeed replaced with fresh A6M types and some Nicks. The sweeps reduced the numbers a bit, but once the bombers came in the LR CAP was also reduced and a lot of Blenheims went down. I hate giving away kills, but at least losing 55 Blemheims is better than 55 4E. To top it off, thunderstorms reduced the effect of the bombing, and the LR CAP took a lot of losses as well. Thankfully our troops are in the hex, so pilot losses were not as heavy as they could have been. After all of the strikes it looks like about 30-40 damage on the base and it lists 51 fighters still there, but I doubt the numbers are correct.

I also went for Patna! [:)]

This went slightly better as there were no thunderstorms. Still had to fight through a massive CAP of A6M and Oscars. Lost a good number of Wellingtons and B-25C, but the B-26 and the 4E did get to the base and put a decent level of damage on it. Looks like 40-45 damage on the rollover, but of course, who knows for sure. Here the Wildcats from the Enterprise were on LR CAP along with a bunch of Martlets and P-40E, but unfortunately the sweeps arrived late and by the time the last got there nothing was up.

This is my first big 4E (and 2E) strike, and I'm happy I pulled the trigger. It sends notice more than anything that the Allies won't simply sit back, and that although losses will sometimes be severe, I'll continue to try to push. All planes in the area around Hyderabad go back to Bombay to recoup, and I'll now upgrade to some P-38F there as well as filling out some B-17F groups to get them ready.

At Patna I'll keep going, which is dicey, but it seems there is an opportunity to close the base enough to be able to conduct paradrops and subsequently fly troops in. The range of Japanese planes will allow some LR CAP even if Patna is closed, but it'll surely make him have to adjust if I can do this, and I want to start making the Japanese react a bit to at least see how he'll choose to do that. This is as much about learning my opponent as anything else. [;)]

On the day the Allies lose around 265 airframes, but not so many pilots as I would have thought. About 90 KIA and another 50 MIA. The Japanese lose around 90 airframes. Unsustainable, of course, but this kind of a strike will be rare.

CHINA: A massive bombardment hurts the now fortifying troops near Chinkiang. More fresh ones on the way as well. He's got a huge amount of arty in the hex now.

This kind of a day in the war would be a complete disaster. About 30-35% losses. Yikes.

One thing I'm learning is not to trust LR CAP alone to protect bombers. It's useful, but not a replacement for escorts. I've got to get comfortable with the Allied material used offensively. I have lots of ideas, and I have great examples in what Jocke and Torsten have done. I just want to tweak things a little and not buy into the idea that I have to always wipe out the strongpoint. This time I've had to go for it, but I won't always.

In real world, day like that will probably stop any air offensive for weeks if not for months. In game, few days and You fight again.

This time I've had to go for it, but I won't always.

Offensive LCAP is great weapon (sometimes) but also it messing up with game air engine. Especially when multiple groups and big plane numbers are involved. My experience show that usually it works against person using it. LCAP is helping bombers because it works like high altitude escort but very often it disturb sweeps not allowing or limiting numbers of sweeping planes that can intercept enemy CAP

This kind of a day in the war would be a complete disaster. About 30-35% losses. Yikes.

In real world, day like that will probably stop any air offensive for weeks if not for months. In game, few days and You fight again.

Yeah, there needs to be a heavier morale hit when you have this type of loss. Should knock it back all the way to 35 - 40% in this case. That would force you to ground that unit and/or pull it back to rear area for a bit to recuperate ... if you do try to fly it again, it will fail most of the checks, launch in fragments, likely abort on the way to target, and suffer more morale loss.

I suspect and beleive that Henderson simply ran out of time on a lot of things. You can look at the game from a developer perspective and see so many 'hooks' that are not fully utilized, this is an example of one. Units do take a morale hit, but not a serious one. I suspect they simply ran out of time to fully test and so left the implementation incomplete. If you think about the amount of testing required just to balance this one minor feature ....

Maybe what we can do is form a players beta union. The union could propose some minor adjustment projects to Michael like this. Set up a test bed where it can be initially tweaked and readily tested (shared with Michael for that purpose), then test in some test H2H test games to confirm magnitude, then released as part of the beta.

I can think of 20 - 30 minor items like this easily. I can also think of a number of people here who would be good candidates for that union ... let me start with both of you. [;)] Experienced. Level headed. ...

Just a thought ...

Erik,

I understand your attempt to suppress Patna prior to your planned airborne operations, but what are you trying to achieve at Hyderabad with your air operations? Are you trying to suppress the airbase prior to launching ground bombing missions against the defenders? Do you even need to suppress the airbase at all to support a ground assault?

I wonder if it wouldn't be more productive to isolate Hyderabad first by taking the surrounding bases before trying to confront the bulk of Japan's air defences head on? As long as GreyJoy is allowed to mass his air defence at Hyderabad and Patna, I see you suffering unsustainable air losses without necessarily contributing towards your actual objectives.

Perhaps I'm not seeing something clearly?

Sorry for the radio silence. I was on a foggy hill in Scotland with only intermittent WIFI and a group of 14 students for the last few days.

Feel good about the NO vote up there. Interesting to be there when it happened, and have several people around voting each side. They all handled it well, and there seemed to be no animosity, which was good.

It has for me too! Not because I wanted to stop completely, but for several reasons.

One, I hate giving away kills, and I don't have a solid long term bombing objective yet that requires me to keep it going. This was done for experimentation and I needed to take a hit to get the info I wanted.

Two, many of the units were in fact shattered and would have given a poor fight the next day.

I agree. It's one of the things I wanted to figure out on the Allied side, and early indications are to use it only as a small part of the whole package.
