Climax At Nijmegen Bridge
Nijmegen, Holland, 20 September 1944: Operation Market Garden was to be characterized by intense fighting for the control
of a number of vital bridges. Each was a vital link in the chain leading to Arnhem. The road bridge across the Waal River in Nijmegen was the second of three
bridges which had to be secured in order to relieve the British 1st Airborne and throw a force across the Rhine. A task
force composed of a mixture of U.S. paratroopers and the British armored relief column was assigned to take it. The
paratroopers had successfully crossed the Waal in company strength one mile west in a daring daylight river assault. The
orders for the task force in Nijmegen were to cross the road bridge at any cost and link up with the paratroopers who
were fighting their way toward the north end of the bridge.

A PROVIDENTIAL OCCURRENCE
Veghel, Holland, 22nd September 1944. The 101st Airborne Division had managed to capture all the canal bridges between
Grave and Eindhoven. This opened the path for the XXX Corps to reach Arnhem. Model prepared to retake the territory held
by the Paratroopers. The small town of Veghel was the focal point of the only significant German effort to sever Hell’s
Highway. On the morning of the 22nd September, a reinforced Kampfgruppe attacks Veghel from the east. The only unit in
Veghel was the 2nd Battalion, 501st Parachute Regiment reinforced by a number of stranded British units. Using Dutch
Resistance information, General Taylor ordered the 506 Para Rgt and the 327th Glider Rgt to move towards Veghel.

rico21 -> Medal Of Honor*ARNHEM(10/11)* (2/3/2017 4:31:43 PM)

***ARNHEM(10/11)***
Medal Of Honor
John Roderick Towle (October 19, 1924 - September 21, 1944) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the
United States military's highest decoration-the Medal of Honor-for his actions in World War II.
Towle joined the Army from his birth city of Cleveland, Ohio in March 1943, and by September 21, 1944 was serving as
a private in Company C, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. On that day, near Oosterhout in the
Netherlands during Operation Market Garden, Towle engaged a German force with his rocket launcher in an attempt to
disable two enemy tanks and a half-track. He was killed during the battle and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor
six months later, on March 15, 1945. Towle, aged 19 at his death, was buried at Calvary Cemetery in his hometown of
Cleveland.
Private Towle's official Medal of Honor citation reads:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 21 September 1944,
near Oosterhout, Holland. The rifle company in which Pvt. Towle served as rocket launcher gunner was occupying a
defensive position in the west sector of the recently established Nijmegen bridgehead when a strong enemy force of
approximately 100 infantry supported by 2 tanks and a half-track formed for a counterattack. With full knowledge of the
disastrous consequences resulting not only to his company but to the entire bridgehead by an enemy breakthrough, Pvt.
Towle immediately and without orders left his foxhole and moved 200 yards in the face of intense small-arms fire to a
position on an exposed dike roadbed. From this precarious position Pvt. Towle fired his rocket launcher at and hit both
tanks to his immediate front. Armored skirting on both tanks prevented penetration by the projectiles, but both vehicles
withdrew slightly damaged. Still under intense fire and fully exposed to the enemy, Pvt. Towle then engaged a nearby
house which 9 Germans had entered and were using as a strongpoint and with 1 round killed all 9. Hurriedly replenishing
his supply of ammunition, Pvt. Towle, motivated only by his high conception of duty which called for the destruction of
the enemy at any cost, then rushed approximately 125 yards through grazing enemy fire to an exposed position from which
he could engage the enemy half-track with his rocket launcher. While in a kneeling position preparatory to firing on the
enemy vehicle, Pvt. Towle was mortally wounded by a mortar shell. By his heroic tenacity, at the price of his life, Pvt.
Towle saved the lives of many of his comrades and was directly instrumental in breaking up the enemy counterattack.

rico21 -> XXX*ARNHEM(11/11)* (2/5/2017 4:58:13 PM)

***ARNHEM(11/11)***
XXX
During Operation "Market Garden" 34 876 airborne soldiers were committed: 20 190 jumped in parachute, 13 871 landed in
gliders and 905 from planes. 1 927vehicles, 568 guns and 5 230 tons of equipment and supplies were also brought by
airlift. The airborne units fought with an utmost bravery against an enemy much stronger both in strength and assets. The
paratroopers lost 13 000 KIA, wounded and MIA. But this sacrifice was not useless because it permitted to immobilize the
Germans into Arnhem and to inflict them heavy losses which therefore facilitated the task of the 82nd and 101st divisions.
Like so many examples in History, "Market Garden" failure is more the result of a set of convergent causes than one
single error. According to the British historian Martin Middlebrook (Arnhem 1944 book) these causes are as follows:
- The under-assessment about the German capability to recover and to resist after the Normandy landing, which only
Generals Urquhart and Sosabowski disapproved; - The fact that the 1st airborne division was not informed about the
presence, though well known, of two armoured divisions around Arnhem; - General Browning’s decision to set up his CP in
Holland, which did not brought anything to the conduct of the battle, but reduced the first wave by 36 gliders; - The
deficiencies of the air transport planning, particularly the refusal to drop by night, the refusal to drop at least one
element close to the two ends of the bridge, the refusal to operate two turn-rounds on the first day and the selection of
DZs far away from the targets. All these factors deprived the paratroopers of their best advantage, the tactical
surprise; - The incapability of the 1st division Commander to make the battalion COs understand the vital importance
speedy execution in the objective seizure; - The insufficient use of the possibilities offered by the Dutch Resistance
and population; - The insufficient use of close air support; - General Browning’s wrong assessment about the importance
of seizing the Nimegue bridge and the priority to put on it; - The slowness of the IInd Army and the XXXth Corps' thrust;
- The wrong estimate by General Urquhart and his staff of the importance of the Driel ferry and of the heights
controlling the position.

Rico, I applaud your ability to make good, challenging scenarios. Unlike official ASL scenarios that rely on a players ability to know the book to take advantage of little known rules for play balance that cannot translate well into TotH, your games are based totally on TotH. Your scenarios are tough but not ridiculously so. I play at the NORMAL setting so maybe my experience is different compared to the HARD setting players but I find them just right. Thank you.[sm=Cool-049.gif]

ASL The Last Hurrah Scenario 45 - Revenge at Kastelli

Published in ASL Module 6 - The Last Hurrah

KASTELLI, CRETE, 20 May, 1941: A number of Greek regiments, under-
strength and poorly armed but with grim determination after the defeats of the
past month, were on Crete. On the day of the German paratroop assault, one
such - the 1st, numbering a bit over 1,000 men - was stationed at Kastelli near
the western end of the island to protect its small harbor. German troops landed
east of the village, and north and south of the main road nearby. Needing no urg-
ing from the New Zealand officers attached, the Greeks - though poorly-armed -
sallied out to meet the enemy.

Best played as Greek vs. German when playing against the AI.

Units:
German: Squads, Leaders, LMG
Greeks: Squads, Leaders, LMG

Maps: ASL Maps 2, 3 and 11

Setup:
Greeks set up anywhere in BR Zone 1
Germans have been pre-placed in this scenario

Terrain: Village, grain, brush (all woods hexes made brush by scenario rules), orchards

Visibility: 7 hexes

Scenario Length: 11 turns (the last turn being Greek only)

Victory Objective: The Greek player wins a major victory by amassing 20 or more victory points.
The German player wins by preventing this and/or by achieving the VP amounts set in the scenario.

NOTE: I also included a scenario with a GE prefix that allows for German set-up when playing against
a human or the Allied AI. The other scenario has pre-placed German units.

idjester -> RE: Submitted Scenarios (2/16/2017 11:51:35 PM)

3 Custom Scenarios that are linked together for the Battle of Fontenay-Le-Pesnel. These scenarios take units from one scenario to the next.

Name: Operation Martlet: Fontenay-le-Pesnel Village Part1
Date: 25th June 1944
Location: In the rural lowlands West of Caen, France

History: Operation Martlet (also known as Operation Dauntless) was part of a series of British attacks
to capture the town of Caen and its environs from German forces during the Battle of Normandy of World
War II begun by the Allies. It was a preliminary operation undertaken on 25 June 1944 by XXX Corps of
the British Second Army, to capture Rauray and the area around Noyers.

At noon on the 25th, the Tyneside Scottish moved up to le Haut d'Audreu to secure the area and the 1/4th
King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry advanced with the 24th Lancers through the 4th Lincolns, from the
hamlet of Bas de Fontenay (Lower Fontenay), west of Fontenay village along the Juvigny road, to objective
"Walrus" at Tessel Wood on the spur north of Vendes. The infantry advanced uphill and had made 100 yards
(91 m) in four minutes behind a dense creeping bombardment, when a German Nebelwerfer bombardment began,
slowing the advance and causing many casualties. The battalion eventually advanced 1-mile (1.6 km) to the
edge of the wood. A counter-attack was repulsed and the 24th Lancers knocked out two German tanks.

On the left flank, in the 147th Infantry Brigade area, the 11th Royal Scots Fusiliers advancing towards
"Barracuda" on the northern fringe of Fontenay, disappeared into the mist and immediately had many
casualties. Soldiers held on to each other to maintain direction and when the sun rose, snipers and
machine-gunners in their path began to inflict more losses.

Scenario Tactical Overview
German: Squads, LMG, MMG, HMG, Ordnance, AFV, OBA
British: Squads, LMG, MMG, Flamethrower, Mortar, Piat, Ordnance, AFV

Special Scenario Rules:

1) You should only play as the British side during these linked scenarios.

2) This is the first of three scenarios for the village of Fontenay-le-Pesnel. See below for special
instuctions for further scenarios. For this scenario place all of your units as you would normally do.

Linked Scenario Special Rules:

Each scenario will increase the playable area of the map and give the player reinforcements. When you
finish a scenario you should record the final location of all British units that are unbroken. You will
position replacement units in the same hexes at the start of the next scenario. Reinforcements will arrive
at the start of each new scenario and come in from the north. It will be assumed that between scenarios
broken units will be taken off the frontlines and replaced by fresh units, and some units will gain or
lose equipment.

While playing through these scenarios keep in mind the goals that you must achieve. If you miss out on
just one point during a playthrough that could make a big difference between a victory and a defeat. Also
keep in mind units final location at the end of a scenario. These locations will be used for the following
scenario, but more importantly if you don't have any units on the frontlines that could be extra time wasted
trying to move units up which inturn could make each additional scenario even more difficult. Try and find
a good balance between getting your units moved up into good positions for the next scenario and pushing
too hard and getting your units broken. Remember only units that are unbroken and not destroyed will be
deployed on the frontlines, you should take extra care to make sure these units survive intact.

The Linked Scenario Outline:

Part 1- British player must secure 2 reinforced buildings that are the German advanced guard to the Village.
Each of these Buildings are worth 1 victory point towards the final total. (this area is north of the main
village of Fontenay-le-Pesnel.)

Part 2- The British player must now rush into the village of Fontenay-le-Pesnel and get to key locations.
This will be a building by building, street by street, fight on the main part of the village. There are 3
key locations in the town which the British player must secure for victory points to add to his total.
(This will be the main part of the Fontenay-le-Pesnel village.)

Part 3- The British player must now hold everything they have sacrificed so much for. Beware, the sounds
of German tanks can be heard off in the distance as a massive counter-attack is crossing the river Le
Bordel and headed to retake Fontenay-le-Pesnel. The British player is now the defender of the village
and will setup first using the rules from above. Once again this small village will see bloodshed for
the third time in just one day. Keep hold of the 3 key locations, for each held at the end of this
scenario 1 victory point will be awarded.

At the end of the third scenario the British player will have a total score from all 3 scenarios. His
total number of victory points will determine his final vitory.

British Major Loss 0-1
British Minor Loss 2-3
Tie 4
British Minor Victory 5-6
British Major Victory 7-8

Maps: Two maps

Terrain: Wooded Terrain with some brush and orchards, roads and buildings which are part of a village.

Scenario Length: 8 Full Game Turns

Victory Objective: Hold the three Victory Point locations to earn points towards linked scenario goal.

[:)] Idjester's custom scenarios "Fontenay-le-Pesnel": that looks absolutely terrific! Certainly, a master's lesson in the subtle Art of Designing new scenarios and campaigns...

[:)] I don't forget Rico21, Utexgrad, Big Ivan and those numerous TotH's Comrades who are giving us such a Great Fun with their own tough, historical or exotic scenarios!

[:)] Asl3d's Graphics mod: simply sublime. With aesthetically rendered maps and totally original, gorgeous new counters!

[:)] Official DLC "Kursk" (it doesn't need any superfluous comment).

Yes, indeed: that's Christmas every month on TotH's forum. Really.

I have to urgently put an end on my own "CB002 Thunder over Boislonde" scenario as a tribute to the TotH's community. It's about Normandy; june 18th, 1944; British vs Waffen SS; each side playable vs AI => two scenarios in one pack, like "CB001 Typhoon over Tula".
Some health and domestic issues did hamper me those last months, but the HUGE & ENTHUSIASTIC WORK done by all these [&o] Great Grunts (Peter & Jörgen too, obviously) makes me feel ready (again) in definitely putting the old, unfinished work on the craft! And all those I'm keeping asleep back in my storeroom, too. [;)]

The fact that people know how to appreciate it is also!

Rosseau -> RE: Submitted Scenarios (2/17/2017 10:54:21 PM)

I show 219 scenarios in my folder - including the originals and DLC. That makes around 200 from Rico's group. And each one has a different flavor. Hard to put a price tag on all that work, plus the excellent counter and map mods.

Thank you!

CB002 Thunder over Boislonde BR[v1.1]

German side scenario? Same post (#: 409) on March, 31st...

Updated: March 17th, 2017.
Dedicated to: "Tigers on the Hunt first BirthDay" on Saturday, February 25th, 2017.

Date: June 18th, 1944, some days before the launching of Operations Martlet & Epsom
Area: Normandy, West of Caen (British Sector, Height [cote] 102 area)
Abstract: BR Assault, with Reinforcements + --> [<- + GE Defense then Counterattack, with Reinforcements

Order of Battle:
49th Infantry Division's elements: 6th Battalion/the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment;
24th Lancers' tanks (Sherman V); 17pdr SP Achilles TD (from divisional reserve);
Battalion CO: Lieutenant-Colonel R.K. EXHAM, MC
versus
12.SS-Panzergrenadiere Division elements: two Kompanie (9. & 10.) from III.Bataillon/SS-Panzergrenadiere
Regiment 26 plus maneuver elements (Panzer IV & V) from 8.Kompanie/II.Bataillon/SS-Panzer Regiment 12;
Kampfgruppe CO: SS-Obersturmbannführer OLBOETER.

History(1):
- The newly arrived [June 16th] British 49th Infantry Division (West-Riding, [Yorkshire]) will attack
a position held by the 12.SS-Panzergrenadiere Division Hitlerjugend. The 49th is better known as the Polar Bears.
This was a pre-war territorial division that, by 1944, included units from most of Britain. They have received their
nickname by spending 18 months
[until late 1942] as a garrison force for Iceland.” They’ve earned an "Experienced"
assessment, while they didn't have fought any battle before Normandy. Nevertheless, they are rated "Elite" or "1st Line"
(as a Type) and "Veteran" or "Seasoned" (as an Experience) in game's terms. A way to reflect their high morale & training.
- The Germans didn't have any new divisions to throw into the battle, therefore the over-stretched 12.SS HJ
remained responsible for the defense. The HJ was already seriously affected by naval shelling, air bombing and
previous fighting.
” Following the combat of June 17th, they've settled two hundred meters back in a new prepared
position, after they've taken ~150 losses in a fierce struggle. British losses were 250 Tommies.
- Two Kompanie of the SS-Pz.Gren. Rgt. 26 - a reduced battalion - were holding Boislonde parkland and its manor”.
June 18th at dawn, the British will try again to seize this key position that lays between Cristot and Fontenay-le-Pesnel.

Best played as: British Human vs German AI
Difficulty to be set: NORMAL/HARD
Fog of War: ENABLED
Quality Path: HIGH

Side A - (AI: Hold)
Waffen-SS & a few Assault Engineers: LMG, MMG, HMG, MTR (light), DC, FT, PF, PSK, ATG, AFV (TK & HT), Radio & OBA (x1)
Side B - (Advance)
British Elite & 1st Line: LMG, MMG, HMG, MTR (light), DC, FT, PIAT, ATG, AFV (TK), Radios(x3), OBA (x2)

Length: 12 turns (only the British side will play on the last turn)
Map: new designed map
Terrain: Bocage & Woods (flat countryside), sparse Buildings (some FBL), Rubbles, Shell Holes, Trenches
Visibility: 9 hexes (i.e. Dust due to recent intensive shelling & smoke laying by heavy mortars)
The map is 33 (height) x 20 (width), 2 sectors
<Big Map> file included in ZIP for a future Campaign Game, but some <Sectors> are still void.
Note: the place where the real battle was fought was narrow; minus a square km wide!
All hexes are playable, with some deployment & reinforcement restrictions. Please, consider the map's upper left corner
as the North direction, towards Cristot. The lower right one is the South direction, towards Fontenay-le-Pesnel.

Your mission: as the British Commander, YOU HAVE TO SEIZE Château de Boislonde (Strongpoint & former Command Post),
its farming's outbuilding (rubble in the coppice nearby the Château) WHILE MINIMIZING YOUR LOSSES.
Victory conditions: the side with the most VP (balanced, i.e. asymmetric) at the end wins. Both sides will earn
VP by owning each hex of the three VP0s' building [12,19], [13,18] & [13,19] locally known as Château de Boislonde(2),
plus its annexes in hexes[10,22] (farmhouse), [17,9] (warden's house), [18,17] (garage) & [19,10] (gardener's house).
German side (AI) will earn KIA-VP & EXIT-VP too, these for Half Squads only (in facts: squads being reduced by combat
result), assuming the HS will "retreat to safety" with another day of fighting in mind. Please, be sure having a look
at the <Scenario Victory> panel (<Ctrl+Y> when playing) for more details.

Aftermath: one of the III.Bataillon Kompanie (10.Kompanie) has been quite annihilated in the park.
Then, the III.Bataillon CO led a counter-attack with 9.Kompanie and some Panzer IV, Panthers, Sd.Kfz.251 and heavy mortar fire.
The British were repulsed northwards but an accurate, devastating Allied artillery fire save the day in definitely
repulsing the fanaticized (3) but exhausted young Waffen-SS. Later, after Goodwood's success, the infamous Radio Berlin's
speaker "Lord Haw Haw" (a British born fascist) did favor the 49th Division as being real "Polar Bear Butchers"!
A kind of tribute from vice to Virtue.

Hello France... hope I didn't butcher the name to badly when I tryed to purnounce it. I'm sure I got it wrong but if you can help me maybe I can say it right.

Also not to put to much pressure on you BUT..... I am planning on playing your scenario on Tigers on the Hunt Day Feburary 25th.... The live stream awaits your awesome creation. Many people will get to experience it for the first time, and I only hope to give it the time and justice it deserves.

Look forward to Thunder over Boislonde, the first every play of this scenario, live infront of millions of people (OK, maybe just a hand full).

Hope you can attend and have the file ready... pressure... pressure..[:-][:-][:-]

LN59 -> RE: Submitted Scenarios (2/22/2017 9:24:32 AM)

Hi, Idjester!

Gooood News! CB002, British side's designed scenario was uploaded February 22nd, 19:00, Western Europe Time.

My Dear Tax Collector has just given me a good time limit as reprieve... but nothing that does permit to [>:] with regard to TotH!

"Oooh, it's so GoooOD being an Happy Tax Payer!" (Droopy, obviously, was on my side). [:D] [:D] [:D]

The scenario would probably require some more accurate tunings in <Victory Conditions> (VPs calculation & balance).

So, don't hesitate in reporting me all errors & incoherences that should still exist in the scenario, because I've in mind

a future mini campaign (2 or 3 days of fighting) based upon the same events around Boislonde, from June 17th to June 19th, 1944.

It will be my first attempt (certainly requiring a lot of time) to master that kind of scen. design with new constraints I'll surely

have to discover.

My own testings on CB002-BR are still giving me satisfaction, but I'm always totally open to your feedbacks & suggestions,

and those from all other players too! It surely will be Great in helping me, when I would be involved in designing that campaign.

My Friendliest Greetings to You & to the whole Community!

Red Barricades

Historical Background:
By mid October the fighting amidst the rubble of the Red Barricades Factory Complex in the northern section of Stalingrad
had drawn in more and more of the German 6th Army's forces. On the 22nd the 79th Infantry division, supported by
engineers, tanks and artillery, launched an intense attack over the Railroad embankment toward the Barricades Factory.
Under heavy fire from dug-in tanks and Russian snipers, the German troops slowly made ground toward the Factory. The
Soviet line finally broke, but by day's end only a corner of the factory had been taken.

The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.

German : --> [- : Russian

Scenario Length: 7 Game Turns - LOS (9 hexes)
Victory objective: The side with the required Victory Points is the winner. Both sides gets VPs for owning VP Objectives.

Big Ivan -> All Hell Breaking Loose. (2/25/2017 10:14:43 AM)

In honor of Tigers on the Hunt day February 25, 2017 here is the first of three scenario for the TotH family.[;)]

JP006: All Hell Braking Loose: 12th November 1944. Kerling, France

History: After pausing for a month, the US 3rd Army was eager to get moving again. However, the wait saw the
weather turn bad as autumn rains turned the region into a quagmire. On November 9th, the 90th Infantry
Division crossed the rising Moselle River north of Metz at Cattenom and Malling. While two regiments of the
90th continued to clear the old Maginot Line Forts, the third regiment, the 359th, expanded the bridgehead to
the southeast near Oudrenne. However, the 90th Division Mosele crossing did not go unnoticed by German
Army Group G. The 25th Panzergrenadier Division, little more than a kampfgruppe took up positions by
November 12th in front of the advancing US 359th Regiment. Supported by a small number of assault guns
and tanks, the 25th PG was in position to counterattack the pontoon bridges at Malling. All Hell broke loose
the morning of the 12th when American infantry supported by armor ran straight into the waiting 25th PG.

Play Mode: Best played as Americans against Computer German, hard or very hard difficulty.

Special Rule: The American player (Human Player Only) is to begin by advancing his column only along the
center road and continue along the road until fired on by the Germans. After fired upon the American player
may freely move anywhere beginning in the turn the fire took place.

Units Human Players (AI player units may vary)
German: Squads, LMG, MMG, HMG, PF, AFV, OBA
American: Squads, LMG, MMG, Light MTR, OBA, AFV

Map: Up direction is to the southeast, three maps (1x3).

Visibility: 6 hexes.

Terrain: Rural with Water, Hills and Town

Scenario Length: 12 Game Turns

Victory Objective: The side with the most Victory Points at the end is the winner. Both sides get VPs for
owning VP Objectives at the end of the scenario and killing enemy units.

Scenario Designer: John M. Pirman [Matrix Callsign: Big Ivan]
