Do not say that, Sting and us know perfectly that we have absolutely no control over how things are going in any naval battles... We can't reproach you with having crappy ships or captains, can we? ;)

But it worries me a little about the Kaigun efficiency in this game... Is the japanese player starting the Jutland scenario with little experience for his ships? Shouldn't it be raised a little and be over the british ships' one because of the prior invasion of Philippines and the probable fights that occured with the US Navy?

btw I was surprised by your last screenshot. I needed a second to realize that the colour of the flag at Cam Ranh Bay was because of your colored layer - thought it had been invaded by Belgium. :D

I don't know about their experience, I would think it should be rather battle hardened after wiping out the USA according to the scenario notes. Thier gunfire doesn't appear to be any good at all though.

Belgium are our secret ally in this game, don't tell Sting!

Seriously I'm still trying to work out where i went wrong, I applied, or tried to apply maximum force against what is a portion of his fleet.... and the results are consistently poor.

Cheers

Okay guys Day 6 and we are really motoring - not even 24 real hours passes and we are 6 days gone in the campaign. That may have a lot to do with the weather here being really awful and there is every incentive to stay warm and cosy.

Apologies in advance, this turn is frankly very boring..... but then it had to happen at some time. I'll post the whole combat report its so brief!

Impressed aren't you?

Residents of Pescadores have noticed a bit of a messy scene in the docks today, you may be interested to see the contents (or part of the contents) of the harbour.

So, what is going on? Well my lads are generally thanking the gods that they are more or less back in harbours, apart from some BBs still limping back from Hong Kong....and they are nervously looking around for any periscopes! The pursuit of my ships has not happened, so perhps String is either licking his wounds, or thinks as he's ahead on points he can wait for me to sacrfice some more of my ships. One thought that has occurred to me is that the guy beside his base has an advantage in being able to quickly rearm and refuel compared to the fleet that is a long way away. Map included as always, but there's not much on there. The only thing of interest is that CA TF that is sailing down near Manila - it was north of TayTay yesterday.... what is it up to?

Map maybe not included, can't put more than one graphic on a post..... see mnext post for map.

Grrrrrrr

Oka, here's the map..... not all the area is shown as there's nothing out there at present to the West.

So, to the map. Looks very quiet again. His fleet in the middle of the South China Sea seems to be CA/CL and CV. That's surely not a lone BB off Lingayen? Where on earth has that 10 CL/DD TF gone that was west of Naga yesterday?

Really just some tidying up of subs now, taking advice I am mining Lingayen approach with the short legged sub that had to pop back for a few chunks of coal!

At least its quiet for a little while to give me a chance to reorganise.

Day 8

One possible sub sighting near Manila, otherwise the map is empty. I don't think he's just going to sit in his bases, but that's what it looks like at present.

Not worth even showing the empty map.

Very interesting AAR Roger...!

I'm downloading WPO as I'm reading this, gawd it's slow: 63k!-(
Hey, Erik can't you give us more juice than that!?? [8|]

Since this is the first official AAR on the forum I guess there's a lot to learn, so don't despair
too much if the going is tough. Here are a couple of considerations:

The Japs based their Navy on the British - don't expect them to beat their masters in an even engagement yet!
In the 1920's the RN still ruled the oceans and I suggest you take advantage of the strategic situation and enmass
superior force in one are at the time. Hong Kong seems to be the first 'logical' target...

Perhaps it's better to reduce your battle line into several battle divisions of no more than 15 ships? Smaller tf's usually
fight better in WitP, not seen any evidence to the countrary in WPO thus far.

Yes I think back to my larger battle lines where many of the ships did not take part, that could be why. I really am blundering about here but that's the way I prefer to learn anyway. The learning curve is still steep, but at least the games finish sooner than WIPT, because if you make a big mess in that its years before you can try again and get it right the next time.

String has met me with smaller forces each time and they have all or almost all, been able to fire at me.

Hong Kong was where I went for...... but I wasn't organised enough I think. Too hasty and I just threw some BB heavy Tfs together and went hunting.

Others will benefit from my stoopidity.

Cheers

Roger

Terminus -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/26/2005 10:12:00 PM)

WPO isn't really that different from WitP in this respect. Amass crushing local superiority and take your enemy on in one place at a time.

Roger Neilson -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/26/2005 10:18:18 PM)

Okay another day dawns and some unexpected visitors.....

In WITP I couldn't see a force like this sneaking into a harbour like this one did. Guess my recce pilots were still gluing their wings on and letting it dry!

Day Time Surface Combat, near Lingayen at 44,50

Japanese Ships
ML Kurokami Maru, Shell hits 5, and is sunk
ML Kuroshima Maru, Shell hits 4, and is sunk

Allied Ships
BC Hood
BC Repulse
BC Renown
DD Tumult
DD Tuscan

Now where I come from that counts as bullying!

Then they have the cheek to shell the port!

Naval bombardment of Lingayen, at 44,50 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

20 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Allied Ships
BC Renown, Shell hits 5
BC Repulse, Shell hits 2
BC Hood, Shell hits 3

Japanese ground losses:
111 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Ok, they have sailed in from Hong Kong so I assume they are heading back there, can't see them anchoring and waiting for me to come visit..... I have subs circling their getaway and a BB TF heading down from Pescadores and another one heading up from Manila to try and intercept.

Of course they could be bait in a trap....... [&:]

but if they are, well its all about intercepting at sea.... an almost impossible feat in WITP..... lets see what happens?

Cheers

Roger

Day 10, a smile on my face at last

Sub attack at 36,51

Japanese Ships
SS No. 71

Allied Ships
BB Resolution, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Tyrant
DD Truculent
DD Toreador

Quite what it was doing out there I don't know, but I guess its heading back to base now, through another two hexes of subs.

Otherwise quiet, the BC raiding force are now not to be seen, and a Tf has left Hong Kong , possibly for Formosa so my Pescadores based BB TF is heading back that way.

Nothing else of note.

Time to celebrate though

Roger Neilson -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/26/2005 11:14:39 PM)

I have no idea!

Maybe I spilled guinness all over it?

It looks dreadful!

I'm going to try and redo it.

Message from String says he's going out for the evening.... drowning his sorrows at that major blow to his puny fleet I reckon! Now I have him on the run!!!!!!!!

Normal service will resume tomorrow European time!

Not a bad pace for a PBEM game mind you.

CMDRMCTOAST -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/27/2005 1:42:42 AM)

One thing you might consider,,
Start to have multiple task forces instead of 1 large one
you are getting shallacked over a huge front from a smaller
force befor your ships come to bear on them..
2 or 3 BB'S per task force and have them all fallow the slowest ones..
and you may see better results...[;)]

I'm sure I had one or two left somewhere????

Thanks, I'm enjoying writing it. Different to my other 'Sun will never set' style.

I'm using Snagit for the maps, it allows selection of any particular area and then all the annotation tools - but its a pricey bit of software at $39. http://www.techsmith.com/

Roger Neilson -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/27/2005 9:27:55 PM)

Okay game resumes following a late night by String!

Certainly some lively action this move, and its less one sided I can tell you. So, on with the story.

The action all occurs at Taytay

Night Time Surface Combat, near Taytay at 39,53

Round 1

Japanese Ships
CA Nisshin, Shell hits 1
CA Adzuma
CA Aso
CA Idzumo

DD Kaba
DD Matsu

Allied Ships
CL Champion
DD Worchester
DD Wren, Shell hits 3
DD Wishart, Shell hits 1
DD Witch
BB De Ruyter, Shell hits 3
BB Hertog Hendrik, Shell hits 1
BB De Zeven Provincien
BB Jacob van Heemskerck, Shell hits 3
CA Dupleix, Shell hits 2

Round 2

Japanese Ships

CA Dupleix, Shell hits 4
CA Desaix, Shell hits 1
CA Waldeck-Rousseau, Shell hits 2
BB Erebus
BB Terror, Shell hits 2

Now many of these were hits but bounced off, but at least the hit ratio in this first battle was more in my favour 51 to me 13 to him. Its all damage as well

Round 3

Japanese Ships
CA Nisshin
CA Adzuma
CA Aso
CA Idzumo
CL Nagara
CL Isuzu
CL Natori
CL Yuru
DD Shimakaze, Shell hits 1, on fire

BB De Zeven Provincien, Shell hits 2
BB Jacob van Heemskerck
CA Dupleix
CA Desaix, Shell hits 1
CA Waldeck-Rousseau
BB Erebus, Shell hits 1
BB Terror

Hits ratio now 14 on me in total, 56 on him.

Well that ends that and my TF retires back to Taytay to rearm, no such luxury for him, my DD TF appears to harass him further.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Taytay at 39,53

Japanese Ships
DD Susuki
DD Ashi
DD Tsuta
DD Warabi
DD Hasu
DD Hishi, Shell hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Sumire, Shell hits 1

CA Dupleix, Shell hits 1
CA Desaix
CA Waldeck-Rousseau
BB Erebus
BB Terror, Shell hits 1

14 hits on me, only 4 on him, but it was at long range. The torpedo is good though

Then along comes another bunch looking for trouble.

DD Mikazuki, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
BB Royal Oak
BB Revenge
BB Royal Sovereign
BB Ramilles, on fire
DD Truculent, and is sunk
DD Toreador, on fire, heavy damage

Not so good this time, but look what I was up against.

Hits 76 on me, 48 on him.

So, what will tomorrow bring... well if he is still at Taytay more of the saem, my damaged ships are heading off to Manila, I have 2 TFs left of CAs, CLs and DDs, all of which are rearmed and almost untouched. If he retires he is moving slow damaged ships through a sea of subs...... Sub torpedoes have a much better chance of hitting than surface launched ones I see.

Watch out for some fun at Lingayen as well, there is a 10 ship TF approaching as on the map, and my main battlefleet(hopefully undetected)is heading in behind him.

Cheers

Roger

Roger Neilson -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/27/2005 9:47:18 PM)

Well, would you believe it, nothing happens, no contacts no nothing.

His Taytay force are well off back to French Indo-China now. Where his force that I assumed were heading for Lingayen have gone who knows?

Ah well, what will tomorrow bring. I'm only 861 points behind him in the game.... a small margin to make up!

[sm=00000436.gif]

Cheers

Roger

Alikchi2 -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/27/2005 10:43:40 PM)

Nice job, and good luck! God knows you're doing better against String than I would have done [:D]

Like they said really excellent maps as well.

Do you know how big the CD guns are at Hong Kong? Maybe you could try and go for a bombardment, Port Arthur style..

Terminus -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/27/2005 11:26:46 PM)

Exited...

Roger Neilson -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/28/2005 12:24:24 AM)

Exited?????? Pursued by bear perhaps (Shakespeare - Winters Tale).... or was there a c missing to make it excited?

I am, I know.

What is he up to?

Roger[&:]

Roger Neilson -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/28/2005 12:26:53 AM)

In order to attack the big guns (must check what they are) I'd need some BBs that aren't in need of some repairs.... thats a bit of a shortage at the moment and this scenario doesn't give you any naval yards to repair them... just one single AR!!!!!!!!!!

I need to wait a while I think and see if they manage to do some DIY repairs.

Your evaluation of my 'progress' is kind, I'd kind of figured I was doing atrociously..... but having a lot of fun anyway.

Cheers

Roger

Terminus -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/28/2005 12:28:22 AM)

Actually, that post previously contained some information that was inappropriate to a one-side AAR thread, i.e. data on the coastal defences of Hong Kong. I forgot myself...

And thus, exeunt omnes, though not pursued by a bear.

Roger Neilson -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/28/2005 12:37:03 AM)

Ok, so what unfolds next?

An interesting turn in which not a lot happens, but hints of the future are there for a reader of the tarot cards or an interpreter of tea leaves.... alas I am neither!

Two separate actions... well actions might be too optimistic a word.

1. Sub attack at 31,47

Japanese Ships
SS U-125 (O1)

Allied Ships
BB Revenge

Missed!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn[sm=dizzy.gif]

Revenge was steaming back into Saigon harbour following its visit to the scenic beauty of Taytay harbour.

2. I'm still laughing at this.... String really thinks one day carriers will be able to deliver attacks on a port and damage shipping there? No chance. We, the Imperial Japanese Navy laugh at such stupidity. We would never do something so utterly pointless.

Day Air attack on Takao , at 48,45

Allied aircraft
Sopwith 2F1 Camel x 6
Sopwith Cuckoo x 7
Fairey IIID x 3

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AK Kaimei Maru, Torpedo hits 1
TK Nissyo Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Aircraft Attacking:
7 x Sopwith Cuckoo launching torpedoes at 200 feet
3 x Fairey IIID bombing at 1000 feet

Now the question has to be asked, is he out there alone with his carrier or are there other nasty BBs around? As a precaution I'm sending my shipping from Takao to Pescadores where I have a strong but dented BB TF. In some ways I hope he is committing a force here as I'd love to know what he is up to.

Aside from that little to disturb the tranquility of the South China Sea. We will see what tomorrow brings, but its sleep for me soon as here in England its late and I have a full day's work tomorrow.

Map included this time, as some things have happened.

I am constantly in awe of you foreigners (not to be said in an unpleasant tone) who seem able to understand and enjoy our (English) culture better than 99% of our indiginous population and its not even your language.

Mind you I do recall you all speak English with an American accent! But if we hadn't made the odd military blunders back in the 18th C they'd still be a colony of ours!

(JOKE... honest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)[sm=sterb011.gif]

Cheers

Roger.... definitely off to sleep now.

Terminus -> RE: The Ne(i)lson touch (11/28/2005 1:08:23 AM)
