That passage from the manual that Jim quoted will need to be updated.  The Axis and Soviets start with a lot less points in the 41 campaign now.

That'll do nicely, thanks!

I would still like to see the id's on the physical counters if possible.

FM WarB -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/13/2010 11:43:55 PM)

re: unit counters. A seperate, legible info box or mouse over of some sort is the way to go, I believe. Try to cram too much info onto a counter and make it legible like a certain Russian Front computer game which will go unnamed and you wind up with such large stacks that you cannot see the underlying terrain.

Runon sentence for emphasis.

wodin -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/14/2010 8:04:53 AM)

I agree about an info pop up box....

elmo3 -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/14/2010 11:34:33 AM)

There is a popup box when you mouse over a hex that lists the unit names as well as hex info.  You can also click on any unit and get a separate window at the right of the screen that lists more details.

Zovs -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/14/2010 2:40:10 PM)

AI and reload

Upstream I believe someone asked if you saved or reloaded a game will the AI do the same thing. I just ran 4 late war first turn tests and what was very interesting is that the AI did 4 different things, in two of the tests I did not move any units and the AI attacked in the same general area with different forces and different results. In the other two tests I tried two different strategies and the AI attacked in both cases completely not where I thought he was going to. So no one turn is the same.

Interface

While at first it may 'appear' that the on map units 'need' a unit ID on them, after you get used to the interface you'll find this is not really necessary and will only clutter the map. You can hover over any stack and see what is in each stack (name of units, supply and and support level, hex ID, port status and Fort level - see screen shot 1 below), you can not click on an enemy stack but you can click on your stacks and then further see the details of said stack (see screen shot 2 below). While at first this may seem to those that are use to playing board war games as odd or 'missing' after spending 4-8 hours a day on the game (during the work week and a further 12-24 hours on Sat. & Sun.) - shussh don't tell me wife you get used to it (yeah I think I have been spending about 30-60 hours a week on this game since Feb. testing 1943-44, my god...[X(], okay I do take a break to watch the hockey games and the Stanly Cup will start tonight...).

this is a mouse over, mouse over, if you move it, it goes away, also, you can set where you want the info box to show up on the screen

SGHunt -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/18/2010 12:52:28 PM)

OK - here's me being good and shifting my question to the Q and A thread.

In Hard Sarge's latest SS in the Detailed Combat Reporting thread, for which much praise and thanks, we see General der Gerbirgstruppe Kubler promoted to Feldmarschal (which strikes me as abig jump for a Corps Commander and which I queried in that thread).

My question here is about the whole 'Event Log' process:

I know there was discussion and rejection of the programmed (or even random) 'political' event coming and disturbing the peace. I wonder if these excellent promotion and demotion (and death, arrest or execution) events provide an opportunity to model at least some 'mad dictator' activity coming down from on high. Triggered by actions on the field, semi-random interventions by Adolf and Uncle Joe could be rolled for and modified by the commander's political and morale rating and their service record. This could involve sacking (or 'resting' as per Guderian and Rommel), retirement or promotion; awarding of medals with morale benefits; removal or addition of generals' ratings points (especially political factors), loss or addition of support units from Corps or Army HQ's, addition or removal of supply points etc etc - I'm just flying a kite here with some of these suggestions, so be gentle!

Maybe this, or some parts of this, is what is being modelled anyway?

Whatever, I think the events log is another great layer of detail and enjoyment.

SGHunt -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/20/2010 9:56:34 PM)

Did I err?

elmo3 -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/21/2010 11:28:07 AM)

AFAIK there are no plans to model "mad dictator" behavior.

Then the game is a "what if" game. What if Adolph was shacked up with Eva for 4 years!!! [X(][:-]

wmcalpine -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/24/2010 5:17:40 PM)

Jon,

In you last screenshot of the 42 AAR, there are blue dashed lines in the Volga res (near center screen) along three hex faces. Does this mean that the terrain is impassible? Assuming that is correct, one of the hex faces has a rail line running through it. Are there any movement effects when a blue dashed line hexside is crossed by a railway?

Bill

Which any good historical wargame should be.

What is the converison rate for oil to fuel?

Does having large surpluses of oil give any bonuses.

What are the penalties for not having enough oil? Does it effect your industry?

Anybody have any info about oil?

elmo3 -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/28/2010 12:53:48 AM)

That has not been detailed in the manual yet.  One of the programmers might know but I don't know how often (if ever) they check in here.

Wild -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/28/2010 1:21:27 AM)

Thanks for the response Elmo.

PyleDriver -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/28/2010 3:56:03 AM)

Lee is correct... But what I've seen playing is, it doesn't help the front line units unless you keep your supply lines in order...

I do not know what the conversion rate of oil to fuel is; perhaps that will eventually be spelled out in the manual.

Oil is obviously used to produce fuel and is also used in production so having lots of it is beneficial and being short of oil is a problem.

I stand corrected. Oil is only used for fuel. If I'm reading Pavel's chart correctly 1 oil point produces 500 fuel points but I don't know what an oil point is supposed to be equivalent to. In the game the fuel usage for a unit is measured in pounds of fuel but what that is in fuel points I don't know.

PyleDriver -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/28/2010 4:18:44 PM)

Jim I stopped trying to figure these guys out. Gary, Joel, and now Pavel. They hurt my brain. And I'm a smart guy. They dwarf me...And that dumb ass last week said he was smarter than all of us...lol...Did he get zapped off?. Erik doesn't play games with assholes...

That's right. Oil is used to generate fuel in fuel refinery factories. "Factories" has no measurement unit. Ex. one oil factory will generate 500 tons of oil. Which then could be converted in fuel "factories" to the fuel - 1 fuel factory requires 500 tons of oil to generate 500 tons of fuel. Consumption is also measured in tons. Average panzer division in 1941 requires 300-320 tons of fuel to be at 100%.

Berkut -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/28/2010 7:50:08 PM)

OOB question:

One of the things I have always found very fascinating about the Eastern Front of WW2 is the rather incredible changes unit organization went through on both sides.

With the Soviet early war Mech Fronts, that were largely a failure, to the later Tank Armies, that seemed to work pretty well, but were too small, etc., etc.

The Germans saw their own evolution of OOBs, although theres was often driven by trying to cope with shortages of equipment, rather than shortages of capable officers.

So does the game include any of that? How do the OOBs and command structures change over time?

Zovs -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/28/2010 8:12:10 PM)

Yes.

quote:

Command structures is the the hands of the player for the most part (there is always exceptions to all rules). The OOBs do change, usually be the withdrawal of the unit and it coming back later (most notable the SS division). For other units some kind of magic takes place by the code gods.

PyleDriver -> RE: War in the East Q&A (4/28/2010 8:15:56 PM)

Well that is being worked on also. Pavel, Jim and Trey. These are some real smart guys, and they crunch the info. Thats why were still in alpha...Me, once agian I'm just a jocky...Oh, and I wright the S&T ...

How do amphibious landings work in the game. Are they port to port? Do you need to activate the shipping? Are they open to air interdiction attacks, that sort of thing.

The Soviets can conduct amphib landings from a friendly port (in the same zone) to a coastal hex in the Black Sea zone and Sea of Azov zone. Amphibious points are accumulated each turn and can be used to conduct landings. Air and naval interdiction might occur.

Yes, as long as the port is not damaged too much, the units can move by sea from port to port.
